Song Yunfei looked at him suspiciously. Could he really have some kind of conflict with Brother Wang?
Thinking back to Brother Wang suddenly going to work out of town, combined with this guy’s attitude, it might actually be possible.
It was just that the two of them were too embarrassed to say it out loud, so on the surface they pretended nothing was wrong, but in reality, there was already a rift between them.
As for Li Jiao, she was already a mother, and since she didn’t have much interaction with Chu Jinhan in daily life, Song Yunfei naturally didn’t think in any other direction.
While she was lost in thought, Li Jiao had already brought over the ladder.
She glanced at the two of them strangely. “Why are you standing at the door? Come in.”
Chu Jinhan walked in with a dark expression. He first went to turn off the main power switch, then came back to check the switch near the door.
“I’ll get you the tools. Just tell me what you need.”
Li Jiao crouched on the ground rummaging through a toolbox. Chu Jinhan, being tall, only needed to lower his head slightly to see the cleavage formed at her chest.
He kept his eyes fixed ahead, expressionless. “A screwdriver.”
Li Jiao rummaged for quite a while before finally finding a screwdriver and handing it to him.
Song Yunfei stood at the doorway and couldn’t see clearly what was happening inside; she only felt that it was very hot.
Before long, she was already covered in sweat. She also noticed sweat forming on Chu Jinhan’s forehead, slowly sliding down his sharply defined face and along his jaw to his chin.
He looked somewhat irritated.
After about ten minutes, Chu Jinhan handed the tool back to Li Jiao. “It’s done. Just turn the power back on.”
Li Jiao took the screwdriver with a smile. “Thank you, Brother Chu.”
Chu Jinhan said nothing, turned around, and walked out.
He didn’t speak to Song Yunfei either, simply heading downstairs on his own.
Song Yunfei quickly followed. “What’s wrong with you? Are you angry?”
Chu Jinhan stopped and turned to look at her. “From now on, can you not interact with her?”
Song Yunfei froze. “Why?”
Chu Jinhan hesitated several times as if he wanted to say something, but in the end he didn’t explain. “Forget it. Let’s go buy a leash first.”
Earlier, they had bought everything except a dog leash, so the two of them still had to go to a pet shop five kilometers away to get one.
They placed Quanquan at the front of the electric bike. It was still uneasy at first and tried to jump off.
Chu Jinhan caught it several times. In the end, he had no choice but to clamp it between his legs, and only then did the little guy settle down.
After the brief panic, Quanquan seemed to get used to the speed. It started sticking its head out, looking around curiously, no longer attempting to jump off.
Song Yunfei was quite surprised—she hadn’t expected the little guy to be so smart.
They bought a leash at the pet store and put it on Quanquan. Then the two of them returned and walked along the river.
Chu Jinhan rode the bike alongside them, while Song Yunfei held the leash and walked Quanquan along the pedestrian path on the overpass.
Perhaps because it had been cooped up for too long, the little guy ran quickly on all four legs, and Song Yunfei could barely keep up.
“Slow down! Quanquan, stop running, or I’ll hit you!”
Quanquan ran happily ahead, the leash stretched tight. Song Yunfei was pulled along by it, her voice especially clear in the open night air.
The streetlights beneath the overpass cast dappled reflections on the surface of the river.
Chu Jinhan followed not too far behind, watching the figure running ahead under the lights, his gaze slightly unfocused.
“Chu Jinhan, look—it’s chasing its own shadow.”
Song Yunfei turned around. A gentle breeze lifted the stray strands of hair by her ear, her face lit up with a radiant smile.
Chu Jinhan raised his eyes and met her smiling gaze—clean and bright, as if all the light in the world had been gathered into her eyes.
It was just an ordinary scene, an ordinary night.
Yet it carried an indescribable sense of peace and warmth.
In an instant, something deep in Chu Jinhan’s heart felt as if it had been lightly scorched by her gaze.
This scene actually stirred an unusual feeling within him.
Having lived together for half a year, this was the first time he had experienced such an emotion—so unfamiliar that even at the subconscious level, it had never existed before.
For him, opening his eyes had meant passively accepting this relationship and doing what a boyfriend was supposed to do, yet deep down he still felt that something was not quite right.
His past feelings toward Song Yunfei—resistance, annoyance—all had some traceable basis in his subconscious, or rather, something vaguely familiar.
Only this feeling in this moment had no precedent. He had never experienced it before.
His mind had no record of it.
It seemed to have appeared out of nowhere in his consciousness.
“Mm.” Chu Jinhan responded softly, sounding somewhat distracted.
Song Yunfei pouted. Even during a walk, he could zone out—how boring.
She turned and continued walking forward.
Suddenly, she saw an elderly woman ahead, hunched over. The bag in her hand had broken, and the oranges inside had fallen out, rolling everywhere.
Seeing that the woman was about to step down toward the road to pick them up, Song Yunfei quickly ran over and stopped her. “It’s dangerous, let me help you pick them up.”
After speaking, she hung the leash on a stone pillar along the railing and went down the steps to gather the oranges.
The elderly woman glanced at her but said nothing, bending down to pick up the ones nearby.
A few oranges had rolled down the slope behind. They ended up near Chu Jinhan, who also got off the electric bike and stopped them.
Before long, the two of them had picked up all the oranges on the ground and returned them to the elderly woman.
“Old—” Song Yunfei paused, only then realizing that the person in front of her was the same elderly woman she had visited that afternoon. “It’s you, ma’am.”
The elderly woman clearly recognized her as well. She didn’t even take the oranges, simply turned away with a dark expression and walked off.
Song Yunfei was still holding the oranges, looking back in confusion and exchanging a glance with Chu Jinhan.
After hesitating for a moment, she chased after the elderly woman again.
After catching up, she handed over the plastic bag in her hands. “Ma’am, your things.”
The elderly woman glared at her angrily. “Don’t come bothering me again! I already said I won’t sell—it’s not for sale! Unless I die!”
Song Yunfei paused and did not continue following, so as not to leave a worse impression.
Chu Jinhan rode the electric bike over to her side and asked, “Is this the difficult client you mentioned?”
Song Yunfei nodded. “Yeah. Isn’t she hard to deal with? She won’t even talk to me.”
Chu Jinhan looked at the elderly woman’s retreating, unsteady figure. “What’s going on?”
Song Yunfei briefly explained the situation. As he listened, Chu Jinhan’s brows gradually furrowed.
Noticing his expression, Song Yunfei asked, “What’s wrong?”
Chu Jinhan said, “If Mr. Wu truly only wanted to make it easier to care for the elderly, he could have taken her with him first and sold the house later. There was no need to rush.”
Song Yunfei stroked her chin and murmured, “But Mr. Wu said it’s because the elderly woman refuses to leave, so he wanted to sell the house.”
Chu Jinhan glanced at her. “Even if the house is sold, would the elderly necessarily be willing to leave? If he truly cared about filial duty, he should first persuade her, not make decisions on his own and do things that upset his mother.”
Song Yunfei froze for a moment, then suddenly realized. “So you’re saying there might be something wrong with Mr. Wu?”
Chu Jinhan pondered. “Not necessarily that there’s something wrong. I just feel that his words don’t match his actions.”
“You should look into it more. You can’t rely solely on Mr. Wu’s side of the story.”
Song Yunfei nodded and gave him a thumbs-up. “You’re right. Let’s go—we’ll head to the elderly woman’s residential area right now to ask around.”
She picked up Quanquan and placed it on the electric bike, then got on herself. “Let’s go—depart!”
Chu Jinhan’s lips twitched slightly. “It’s already this late. Can’t we go tomorrow?”
Song Yunfei glanced at the time and, quite naturally, wrapped her arms around his waist. “What do you mean late? It’s only a little past eight. The square dancers haven’t even finished yet.”
Chu Jinhan fell silent for a moment, lowering his gaze to the hands around his waist.
