After getting onto another road, Chu Jinhan slowed down and navigated slowly through the heavy traffic.
Only then did he ask, “Why are you here?”
Song Yunfei sighed. “Zhang Tao gave me a difficult client and asked me to go take a look.”
After saying that, she felt something was off and added, “Ah, there really aren’t any easy clients in this line of work.”
“Then switch jobs.”
Song Yunfei found that a bit amusing. “If I switch jobs, will there be no difficult clients?”
Chu Jinhan didn’t respond.
The two of them went to the market to buy groceries. At that time, the market was extremely crowded—everywhere was packed with people, and it was almost impossible to squeeze into any stall.
Song Yunfei struggled her way into the crowd and then back out again, her hair completely disheveled.
“It’s all Zhang Tao’s fault for not calling me earlier!” Song Yunfei complained as she handed the vegetables in her hand to Chu Jinhan.
She had originally planned to go grocery shopping in the afternoon, but it was delayed, and she ended up running into the rush hour.
Chu Jinhan glanced at her messy hair and took the vegetables from her hand.
After returning home, Song Yunfei flopped onto the sofa and didn’t want to move at all. After running around all day, she was truly exhausted.
Seeing that she had no intention of cooking, Chu Jinhan turned and went into the kitchen himself.
Song Yunfei was thinking about how to persuade the elderly woman to sell the house and had no energy to cook, so she let him be—if the food didn’t taste good, she’d treat it as a diet.
Not long after, the elderly woman’s son called back. Song Yunfei quickly answered.
“Hello, Mr. Wu. I’m Xiao Song from Jinnong Real Estate.”
A middle-aged man’s voice came from the other end. “Hello. Are you calling about the house?”
“Yes, I’d like to understand the situation.”
There was a brief silence on the line, followed by a sigh. “It’s like this… my mother is getting old…”
Mr. Wu explained that he worked out of town and had already bought a house in Huai City. His son and daughter were studying there as well, so they were all based there now. Because of this, he didn’t have the time to come back and take care of his mother.
After much discussion with his wife, they finally decided to sell the house and bring the elderly woman over to live with them. However, the elderly woman was determined to stay in her old home and refused to leave.
So Mr. Wu contacted an agent to help persuade her.
Song Yunfei understood the full situation and said she would do her best to convince the elderly woman.
The son was acting out of kindness—when people get older, it’s more convenient to have someone by their side to care for them.
Some elderly people are simply nostalgic and reluctant to leave their old homes. Convincing them is not something that can be done easily in a short time.
By then, Chu Jinhan had already finished cooking and brought the dishes out, signaling her to come eat.
Song Yunfei hung up the phone, went to wash her hands, and sat at the dining table. Looking at the dishes on the table—they looked good but lacked flavor—she felt appetite but not much desire to eat.
She looked up at Chu Jinhan. “Did you follow online tutorials when you cooked?”
Chu Jinhan paused slightly and nodded. “Is there a problem?”
“Well… not really…”
Chu Jinhan seemed to understand what she meant. In the past, when she felt she had gained weight, she would have him cook, saying that his cooking helped her lose weight. When she didn’t need to diet, she would order takeout instead.
“If it doesn’t taste good, just order takeout,” Chu Jinhan said as he was about to clear the dishes.
Song Yunfei quickly stopped him.
“No, no! I didn’t say it wasn’t good. Look at you, getting emotional again.”
Expressionless, Chu Jinhan withdrew his hand and began self-reflection. “I followed the tutorial exactly, I’m not sure why it doesn’t taste good.”
Song Yunfei comforted him, “It’s not that it’s bad—it’s still edible. Maybe you just haven’t cooked much yet and aren’t very skilled. After a few more tries, it’ll get better.”
Chu Jinhan responded with a simple “Mm.” “Maybe.”
Song Yunfei smiled. “How about this—next time you cook, I’ll watch and see where things went wrong.”
“Alright.”
After a simple meal, Song Yunfei went to wash the dishes.
When she came out and saw the poor little dog curled up in its cage, she patted her forehead. “I almost forgot about you.”
She simply took the leftover food from earlier and poured it into the dog’s bowl to see if it would eat it.
Unexpectedly, the dog seemed to like it quite a lot, burying its little head deep into the bowl. It was even more enthusiastic than when eating dog food.
Song Yunfei squatted on the ground and turned back with a smile toward Chu Jinhan. “Look, Quanquan already approves of your cooking.”
Chu Jinhan sat on the sofa, silently watching the two of them.
Seeing that he didn’t respond, Song Yunfei pouted slightly, withdrew her gaze, and continued watching the dog eat.
After staring at her and the dog for a moment, Chu Jinhan suddenly picked up his phone, opened the camera, and took a photo of her.
He opened his album—there was only this one photo of Song Yunfei.
Previously, he had never taken photos; his album was almost entirely filled with various work-related screenshots.
He looked at the photo he had just taken. She was wearing a white short-sleeve top, denim shorts, and a pair of purple sheep-shaped slippers.
She was petting the dog’s head, her side profile showing a faint smile. Her hair was tied loosely in a high ponytail, with a few stray strands falling messily, giving her a slightly lazy and relaxed feel.
Because of her posture, her shirt had ridden up a bit, revealing a portion of her fair waist.
Chu Jinhan stared at the side profile in the photo for a long time.
It had to be said that Song Yunfei had indeed changed a lot during this period.
Her temperament had changed—and even her overall appearance seemed different.
In other words, she really felt like a completely different person.
“Such a clean plate—it looks like we’ll save quite a bit on dog food in the future.”
Song Yunfei’s voice pulled him back to reality. Chu Jinhan looked up at her.
Song Yunfei had already picked up the puppy and stood up. “I’m planning to take Quanquan out for a walk. Do you want to come?”
Chu Jinhan nodded.
Song Yunfei grinned at him. “Let’s go!”
The two of them walked out of the house and unexpectedly ran into Li Jiao, who had just returned as well.
She greeted them with a smile. “Are you two going out for a walk?”
Before Song Yunfei could respond, Li Jiao’s attention shifted to the puppy in her arms. She walked over happily.
“Oh, you got a dog? It’s so cute.” Li Jiao reached out and patted Quanquan’s head, smiling warmly. It was clear she was fond of small animals as well.
Song Yunfei said, “We found this one—it’s not bought.”
Li Jiao responded with an “oh.” “You two are really kind-hearted. I’ve actually been wanting to keep a pet too, but I’m busy during the day with work, and I’m worried it might make a mess at home.”
Song Yunfei suggested, “You could get a cat. Cats usually don’t make a mess.”
Li Jiao nodded. “Mm, I’ll think about it later.”
Then she turned her attention to Chu Jinhan. “Since I’ve run into you both, Brother Chu, the light switch in my place is broken. Could you help take a look?”
Chu Jinhan frowned slightly and refused without hesitation. “Call an electrician.”
Li Jiao’s smile turned somewhat awkward.
Song Yunfei nudged him and smiled apologetically at Li Jiao. “Sister-in-law, has Brother Wang already left?”
“He’s left. He left yesterday. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have asked Brother Chu for help.”
Recalling that Brother Wang had previously treated them to a meal and asked them to take care of Li Jiao, Song Yunfei spoke on Chu Jinhan’s behalf.
“Alright, he’ll take a look for you.”
Chu Jinhan turned to look at Song Yunfei, his brows furrowing even more, his face full of reluctance.
Song Yunfei had already pulled him toward the neighboring house.
Seeing his unwilling expression, Li Jiao wasn’t angry. Instead, she found it amusing and smiled.
She opened the door and went inside, pressing the wall switch a few times. As expected, the light flickered intermittently.
“Wait here, I’ll go get a ladder.”
As Li Jiao went inside to fetch the ladder, Chu Jinhan finally glared at Song Yunfei.
Song Yunfei looked at him in confusion. “Why are you glaring at me?”
Chu Jinhan moved his lips, but in the end said nothing.
He simply kept a dark expression, turned his head away, and stopped speaking to Song Yunfei.
