With no other choice, he could only start the electric bike and head toward Xingxing Community.
When the two of them arrived at the neighborhood, the square dancing had just ended, and people were walking home in small groups.
Song Yunfei went to the building where the elderly woman lived and waited at the stairwell, asking anyone who passed by.
The elderly woman had lived there for many years, and many residents knew her.
“Her son? I’ve hardly ever seen him come back. I heard he’s doing pretty well working outside.”
“Old Madam Chen? Is she the one who often picks up trash in the neighborhood?”
“Oh, her—I know her. Her son rarely came back after getting into university. He did come back during the New Year last year though. Speaking of that…”
The speaker was a woman in her fifties who was quite familiar with Old Madam Chen and spoke at length about others’ gossip.
According to her, last year Mr. Wu brought his family of four back. Despite her age, Old Madam Chen still cooked for them.
That alone was one thing, but that man pretended to be generous and gave Old Madam Chen 200 yuan. As soon as he turned around, he encouraged his own children to go pay New Year greetings—and then had the children take that 200 yuan back.
Before leaving, he even took away more than half the vegetables from her yard.
In earlier years, when his work situation was unstable, he sent his children to live with Old Madam Chen and never provided any living expenses. It was all Old Madam Chen using her own money to support her grandchildren’s daily needs.
Because they couldn’t afford new clothes, those two ungrateful children even told others that their grandmother mistreated them—making them wear old clothes and eat leftovers.
When Mr. Wu heard his children complain, he even came back and scolded Old Madam Chen. If his wife hadn’t stopped him, he might have even resorted to violence.
As Song Yunfei listened, her anger kept rising. How could such a despicable person exist?
Suppressing her rage, she asked, “I heard her son wants to take her away and sell the house. Is that true?”
The woman curled her lip, her face showing clear disdain. “What are you thinking? He just wants the money—you think he’s really that kind-hearted?”
“I heard his wife lost her job. Over the past few years they bought a car and a house and can’t keep up with the loan repayments, so they’ve set their sights on that property.”
“I’ll say this—Old Madam Chen is right not to sell. He may sound nice now, but if she really sells it, do you think that ungrateful son will take care of her?”
“If it were me, I’d rather give the house to a stranger than leave it to that ungrateful son.”
Song Yunfei nodded and thanked the woman.
She then asked several other elderly residents in the community and learned that Old Madam Chen’s husband and daughter had not run away, but had died in a car accident.
At first, her parents feared she couldn’t handle the truth and lied to her, saying they had gone away for work. They also embezzled the compensation money to buy a house for Old Madam Chen’s younger brother to get married.
Later, when Old Madam Chen found out, she suffered a mental breakdown and became emotionally volatile.
Although her temper was not good, she still raised her son and supported him through university.
However, her son had disliked her since childhood, feeling she was not as gentle as other mothers.
If it hadn’t been for those two ungrateful grandchildren complaining earlier, which caused a falling out between mother and son, Old Madam Chen would likely have already given him the house.
Song Yunfei rubbed her chest. “I’m so angry. How can there be such a person in the world!”
“I knew that Zhang Tao wasn’t a good person. He actually asked me to persuade this elderly woman. If I had succeeded, I don’t think I could live with myself for the rest of my life.”
Chu Jinhan took her hand.
The warmth from his palm made Song Yunfei pause.
She turned to look at Chu Jinhan, and her anger eased slightly.
Chu Jinhan said, “This isn’t the time to be angry. Even if you can’t handle this, Zhang Tao will send someone else. You need to think about how you’re going to deal with this matter.”
Song Yunfei also calmed down a bit. He was right—if she didn’t do it, someone else would.
Even if Old Madam Chen insisted on not selling, being disturbed constantly by these people would still make life difficult.
The best option would be for her to ignore everything, not take on this task at all, and let others handle it however they wished.
But when she thought about the elderly woman’s situation, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of compassion.
Especially because it reminded her of her grandmother.
Mr. Wu and his children complained that she had given them too little, yet they didn’t realize that what she had given was already everything she had.
After her parents passed away, her grandmother had raised her in the same way.
Song Yunfei deeply understood this. She had seen her grandmother picking up bottles by the roadside after school, and getting up before dawn—no matter the freezing cold or scorching heat—to sweep the streets.
Even in nearly forty-degree weather, her grandmother would walk more than ten miles to sell vegetables, just to save one or two yuan in transportation costs.
“You’re right. Let’s go back and think about it first.”
Feeling somewhat disappointed, Song Yunfei walked toward the exit of the neighborhood. Then, turning her head, she noticed a small convenience store nearby.
She changed direction and walked toward it.
She bought a box of milk, a bucket of oil, and a bag of rice.
Seeing her buy these items, Chu Jinhan understood what she intended to do and did not stop her. Instead, he silently picked up the milk and rice.
Song Yunfei carried the oil herself and walked out of the store, smiling at Chu Jinhan.
“Do you think I’m being nosy?”
Chu Jinhan shook his head slightly. “This is something within our ability. Kindness doesn’t equal meddling.”
Half-jokingly, Song Yunfei said, “I’m afraid people will call me a ‘white knight’ online.”
Chu Jinhan replied, “Stop reading toxic online content. You’re simply doing something you believe is right. Don’t worry about what others think—just be at peace with yourself.”
Song Yunfei stared at him blankly. Under the streetlight, his silhouette was slightly blurred, but his deep eyes carried a reassuring strength.
“Thank you,” Song Yunfei murmured. “It would be great if you could always be like this.”
Being affirmed, supported, and understood—this was truly a very fortunate thing.
For a moment, Song Yunfei even imagined: if he were just an ordinary person, she would probably have fallen for him even faster than the original owner did.
“What?” Chu Jinhan didn’t catch her last sentence.
Song Yunfei curved her lips into a smile. “Nothing. Let’s hurry over—Grandma Chen will be back soon.”
Chu Jinhan looked at her for a moment but didn’t press further. He carried the items and walked toward Old Madam Chen’s home.
They placed the things at the doorstep, and Song Yunfei knocked on a neighbor’s door.
She asked the neighbor to tell Old Madam Chen that these items were sent by the community, and not to mention her.
The main reason was that Song Yunfei feared the elderly woman might refuse them if she knew they were from her.
If it were her, after being harassed by intermediaries for so long, she wouldn’t be much kinder in attitude than Old Madam Chen.
The two of them and the dog sat on the electric bike and headed back toward their rented home.
Watching the nighttime scenery recede around her, the night breeze brushing across her face, Song Yunfei suddenly felt a sense of confusion.
“Chu Jinhan, what do you think is the meaning of life?”
Chu Jinhan rode on, the night wind whistling past their ears, making her softly spoken yet heavy question feel somewhat blurred.
He stared ahead and remained silent for a long time without answering.
Song Yunfei let out a bitter smile. Asking someone who had lost his memory—what answer could she expect?
Chu Jinhan suddenly spoke.
“The meaning of life is something you can only roughly summarize after you’ve lived through it. While you’re living, all you can do is keep moving forward.”
The electric bike passed through the lights and shadows of the city. Song Yunfei leaned against his back, gazing at the distant flickering lights, and said no more.
