Song Yunfei made it up seriously. “He just wants to experience the life of an ordinary person and deliberately came here.”
“Think about it—if he finds out you’ve been spreading his identity everywhere, what do you think will happen?”
Wu Wei blinked, seeming to understand, and nodded. “Oh… I get it. I get it.”
Still feeling uneasy, Song Yunfei added, “So you also have to pretend you don’t know. Don’t show it in front of him. Got it?”
Wu Wei nodded vigorously like a garlic pounder. “Got it, got it, got it.”
Then, as if something occurred to him, Wu Wei asked, “Wasn’t it said that he went missing?”
Song Yunfei replied, “I already told you—he secretly came here to avoid the Chu family. Don’t you understand?”
Wu Wei suddenly realized. “So that’s how it is. I understand now. Don’t worry, sis—I promise to keep my mouth shut and won’t tell anyone.”
Song Yunfei approvingly patted his shoulder. “That’s right. Once he’s done experiencing life and goes back, you won’t miss out on benefits.”
Wu Wei was instantly overjoyed and nearly jumped up in excitement. “Alright, alright! But I did insult him before…”
“It’s nothing. He won’t take it to heart. Haven’t you already been taught a lesson? I’ll also put in a good word for you.”
Only then did Wu Wei feel relieved, even the pain in his body no longer seemed to matter.
“Song sis, if you need anything in the future, just tell me. As long as I can do it, I won’t hesitate!”
A thought crossed Song Yunfei’s mind, and she grinned. “Then compensate me some money—ten thousand yuan will do.”
Wu Wei’s face fell. “I… I don’t have money.”
Song Yunfei looked unhappy. “You were driving a Bentley and still have no money? Just say you don’t want to lend it to me.”
“No, no, it’s not that. I really don’t have money. That car was rented by a few of us together to pick up girls. I only have 500 yuan left on me now. If you don’t mind, I can give it to you.”
Wu Wei was just a drifter—how could he have money?
Whenever he ran out, he would go back to his own convenience store to steal, and he had been beaten many times because of it.
“I don’t mind. Give it to me,” Song Yunfei said without hesitation, treating it as compensation for his previous harassment.
When Chu Jinhan returned, he saw the two of them chatting and laughing.
Immediately, both Wu Wei and Song Yunfei felt a chill run through their bodies.
They both looked up and saw that Chu Jinhan had returned at some point, standing just a step away, looking at them coldly.
Sensing trouble, Wu Wei stood up with an awkward smile. “I’m leaving—bye, bye!”
With that, he ran off in a flash and disappeared.
Chu Jinhan withdrew his gaze from where Wu Wei had gone and looked at Song Yunfei. “Recovered so quickly?”
Song Yunfei chuckled awkwardly. “It wasn’t anything serious to begin with. Let’s go back.”
She dragged her body up. Aside from feeling a bit dizzy, weak, and having a dry throat, she felt there was nothing major wrong with her.
“What were you talking about?” Chu Jinhan asked casually.
Song Yunfei became alert inside, but kept a smile on her face. “Nothing much. He just came to apologize.”
“You added each other as friends?”
“Uh… he compensated me some money.”
Chu Jinhan glanced at her and said nothing more.
After leaving the hospital, the two rode the electric scooter back.
It was around two or three in the afternoon, when the sun was at its strongest. The heat made Song Yunfei feel drowsy.
Leaning against the man’s back, she gazed at the dazzling sunlight and, in a dazed state, fell asleep.
Yet she wasn’t completely asleep—she could still hear sounds from outside and feel the warmth coming from Chu Jinhan’s body.
She also felt herself being lifted into someone’s arms.
In her haze, she heard Chu Jinhan calling her name.
Song Yunfei slowly opened her eyes. The hot air blown by a fan made her feel even warmer.
“Take your medicine before you sleep,” came a deep voice from above her head.
Only then did she realize that she was leaning against Chu Jinhan’s chest.
He was holding a glass of water in one hand and medicine in the other.
He even brought the pills to her lips. Song Yunfei raised her hand, took the medicine from his palm, and placed it into her mouth.
She then took the water he handed her, drank a sip, and swallowed the pill.
She looked up at him. “Aren’t you going out to deliver food?”
“It’s too hot. I don’t feel like going.”
Song Yunfei gave a soft “oh” and looked away again.
Leaning against his chest, she suddenly found herself reluctant to move away.
His body carried a scent of sunlight mixed with jasmine. That scent filled the entire room.
It was actually the smell of discounted laundry detergent from the supermarket, but at this moment, it carried a unique and reassuring warmth.
She hadn’t felt anyone’s care for a long time. Over the years, she had always been alone.
When she was sick with a cold, she went to the hospital by herself. When she felt down, she would process her emotions alone.
Now that she had arrived in a strange world, this sense of loneliness became even stronger.
Especially at moments like this, all emotions seemed amplified.
Her loneliness was magnified, and so were Chu Jinhan’s care and the warmth she felt from him.
Suddenly, her nose tingled with a sour feeling.
Chu Jinhan placed the water glass on a small stool nearby, and just then he heard her sniffle.
Looking down, he saw the woman in his arms with lowered eyelids, fine beads of sweat covering her forehead.
Her long lashes trembled, and a tear quietly slid down from the corner of her eye, falling onto the fabric of his shirt.
His movements paused.
In the past six months, he had seen Song Yunfei cry many times.
But each time it had been out of unreasonable tantrums—her crying had been distorted and irritating.
He had never seen her cry so weakly and pitifully before.
“Why are you crying? Are you feeling very unwell?”
Hearing the voice above her head, Song Yunfei hurriedly raised her hand to wipe her tears.
Lowering her head, she mumbled, “No.”
She then gave a clumsy excuse. “The medicine is too bitter.”
Chu Jinhan looked at her quietly for a few seconds, then suddenly reached out and placed his hand at the corner of her eye, wiping away the tear she hadn’t cleaned.
“Get some sleep first. You’ll feel better once the fever goes down.”
The touch at the corner of her eye made Song Yunfei’s heart skip a beat.
She responded softly, then left his embrace, turned over, and lay down on the bed with her back facing him.
Outside the window, the sun blazed intensely. Inside, the fan rotated gently, accompanied by the chirping of cicadas. It wasn’t noisy—instead, it created an oddly tranquil atmosphere.
Song Yunfei gradually drifted into a drowsy sleep.
Chu Jinhan stayed by her side, occasionally reaching out to feel her forehead.
Perhaps because the weather was too hot, it was difficult to tell whether her temperature had gone down.
He moved the fan away.
Without the fan’s breeze, Song Yunfei quickly broke into a sweat within moments.
Her long hair had become messy, clinging to her cheeks and neck.
She was still wearing the white shirt from the morning, with two buttons undone, revealing her delicate collarbones and the hollow at her neck. The fine sweat on her skin seemed to glisten.
Combined with her flushed cheeks, she carried an inexplicably alluring charm.
The hand resting on her forehead slowly moved downward on its own accord, the fingertips brushing across her cheek and eventually coming to rest on her lips.
