The familiar voice made her, who was on the verge of collapse, feel even more mentally disoriented.
Under the impact of such emotional highs and lows, her mind was left with nothing but a ringing buzz, losing all ability to react in an instant.
“……”
Song Yunfei opened her mouth, but no sound came out. Only tears continued to fall, along with her rapid, broken breathing.
“Don’t drive right now. I’m coming to find you. Don’t move—do you hear me?”
Song Yunfei still couldn’t make a sound. It felt as if shards of glass were stuck in her throat, and each breath she took scraped painfully against it.
After an unknown amount of time, she finally managed, with great difficulty, to squeeze out a single word: “Mm…”
A faint sound, as if it had taken all her remaining strength.
Hearing her voice through the phone, Chu Jinhan’s fingers gripping the steering wheel trembled slightly as well.
Sitting in the back seat, Bai Yu tightly held onto the overhead handle. Several times he opened his mouth, wanting to tell him to slow down, but the words never left his lips.
He had just finished his shift in the afternoon when he was ambushed by this guy, who snatched his car keys.
At first, he wanted to argue a bit, but seeing Chu Jinhan’s panicked expression, he realized something and got into the car right after him.
Along the entire journey, the car sped at an unimaginable pace. Every overtaking maneuver made Bai Yu’s heart leap into his throat.
Before even getting onto the highway, they overtook a truck and nearly collided head-on with another large vehicle. Bai Yu was terrified out of his wits.
After racing all the way there, it was already past nine in the evening when they arrived.
Amid the chaotic crowd, Chu Jinhan spotted the familiar black Volkswagen.
There was a knocking sound on the car window.
Song Yunfei slowly turned her head and looked, but only saw a vague figure in the darkness.
She didn’t move—or rather, she couldn’t move.
When the door was opened, Chu Jinhan realized that the inside of the car was just as cold as the outside.
The interior lights were off, with only the faint glow of the instrument panel and distant flickers of light.
As the light brushed across her face, her disheveled hair, dirty face, and bluish lips flashed briefly before Chu Jinhan’s eyes.
She had been frozen here for an entire day.
At that moment, all rationality collapsed. Instinct and emotion took over his entire being, along with a trace of panic.
That kind of fear was probably something only Song Yunfei herself could truly understand.
The fear of what would happen—and the look in the other person’s eyes—once the truth was known.
He bent down and pulled her tightly into his arms.
“Sorry.”
As he spoke, he opened his coat and wrapped her inside as much as possible.
Song Yunfei looked up at the gray-blue sky. The familiar warmth and scent gradually reached her, slowly pulling her back into reality.
She raised her stiff hand and, in return, hugged him.
“Why… didn’t you answer my calls… or reply to my messages…”
Her voice was hoarse and barely audible. It didn’t sound like an accusation, more like grievance and a confused attempt to confirm something.
Chu Jinhan tightened his arms around her.
Why?
Poor signal, missed the calls—many excuses and reasons.
But feeling her icy body temperature, all those excuses were stuck in his throat.
The truth he couldn’t say, the excuses he couldn’t voice—only silence was the most appropriate response.
And of course, there was also that one word: “Sorry.”
This was, from the very beginning, a fated entanglement. It was a mistake from the start, and a relationship built on lies was never destined to go smoothly.
Song Yunfei didn’t ask anymore, nor did she speak. Her mind had already stopped functioning.
Bai Yu, after squatting by the roadside and vomiting, looked around and more or less figured it out.
Song Yunfei suddenly showing up here, and Chu Jinhan rushing over in such haste—what else could it be for?
“Two fools.”
He muttered a curse in frustration and grabbed the mineral water in his hand, taking several big gulps.
The bumpy ride had made him feel nauseous.
Song Yunfei had already fallen asleep. After going to the airport in the afternoon the day before and then driving for several more hours, she hadn’t rested at all until now.
Once her tense nerves relaxed, she lost consciousness within minutes.
Sensing the person in his arms going limp, Chu Jinhan carried her out of the car and placed her in the passenger seat.
“What happened to her?” Bai Yu walked over and asked.
“She fell asleep.”
Bai Yu was incredulous—fell asleep in a place like this?
“What exactly is going on?” Although he had already guessed part of it, Bai Yu still wanted confirmation. “Earlier you told her you were on a business trip… you didn’t tell her this was the flight, did you?”
“Did you not board the plane at all, or did you never even go to that place?”
Chu Jinhan ignored his questions. He opened the car door and was about to get in, but Bai Yu pressed down on the door.
“Chu Jinhan.” Bai Yu’s expression was more serious than ever. “No matter what you’re doing, whether you’ve recovered your memory or not—if you’re a man, face things properly.”
“An eye for an eye is enough. If you openly take revenge, I’d respect you. But if you’re afraid to hate and afraid to love—or if you use the same methods to deceive and hurt others just to prove you’re clear-headed—I’ll only see you as pathetic.”
Chu Jinhan suddenly looked at Bai Yu.
The night wind blew past, tousling their hair and lifting their clothing hems.
As their eyes met, a tense and confrontational atmosphere silently spread between them.
Chu Jinhan grabbed his wrist and moved Bai Yu’s hand away from the car door. “What right do you have to question me?”
Those words left Bai Yu speechless.
“The matters between her and me are not for you to interfere in.”
Leaving those words behind, he no longer looked at Bai Yu, opened the car door, and got in.
All Bai Yu could do was watch the car drive away. He indeed had neither the status nor the position to intervene.
Even he didn’t know what his relationship with Song Yunfei really was.
At most… not even friends.
By the time the car returned to the residential area, it was already six in the morning.
As soon as Chu Jinhan carried her out of the car, Song Yunfei woke up.
She looked at his face in a daze, and the anxiety in her heart finally settled.
She reached out and wrapped her arms tightly around his neck.
Chu Jinhan looked down at her. “Did I wake you?”
Song Yunfei shook her head, pressing her face tightly against his chest, listening to the familiar heartbeat and sensing the familiar scent.
“I thought… I’d never see you again.”
Chu Jinhan pressed his lips together, saying nothing as he carried her toward the elevator.
After returning to the apartment, their dog rushed out from inside, wagging its tail at them.
Chu Jinhan walked past the dog, went inside, and sat down on the sofa, intending to set her down.
But Song Yunfei still clung tightly to his neck, like an octopus.
“Sit down first. I’ll get some water.”
Song Yunfei shook her head. “No… let me hold you a little longer.”
After a brief silence, Chu Jinhan sat down on the sofa while still holding her.
He lowered his head, looking at her dirty face, and raised his hand to gently wipe away the grime.
“Sorry… for making you worry.”
Song Yunfei still shook her head. “As long as you’re fine, nothing else matters.”
Chu Jinhan paused slightly, then stared at her lowered eyes and asked in a low voice, “Really doesn’t matter… or just pretending it doesn’t matter?”
Now it was Song Yunfei’s turn to freeze.
She could tell that there was something deeper in his words. She suddenly lifted her head and looked at him, her gaze scanning his face.
