Zhang Ran kept talking to her for half an hour, but seeing no sign that Huo Zhiyuan was about to wake up, he couldn’t help but frown.
“That can’t be right. How could it have no effect?” he muttered.
He got up, walked outside, and asked He Yong to bring in the doctors.
When He Yong returned with the doctors, Zhang Siyan and the others came along as well. None of them asked what Zhang Ran had been doing in the room—especially Meng He.
Earlier, Meng Mingxuan had been curious and wanted to sneak a peek, but Meng He had firmly stopped him.
He had only said one sentence: “Don’t go looking for death yourself.”
The severity in his father’s tone had genuinely startled Meng Mingxuan. It was the first time he had seen Meng He speak to him so sternly, and it was clear that he wasn’t joking.
“The patient’s body is somewhat weak, but with a period of recuperation, she should recover completely.”
The doctor, unaware of the previous circumstances, sounded utterly relaxed after completing his examination.
Meanwhile, Zhang Siyan and the others stared with wide eyes.
They almost suspected they had heard him wrong.
Just earlier, at the previous hospital, the doctors had said that whether Huo Zhiyuan would ever wake up depended entirely on fate.
Now they were saying there was nothing seriously wrong?
Before long, all their questioning gazes turned toward Zhang Ran.
It had been he who insisted on transferring her here.
If Huo Zhiyuan’s condition had improved so dramatically, it could only have something to do with him.
Yet Zhang Ran offered no explanation.
Instead, he simply asked, “When do you think she’ll wake up?”
“Very soon, I believe,” the doctor answered.
After seeing the doctor off, Zhang Ran turned to Zhao Jingyu.
“You all stay here and look after her. I’m going to rest for a while.”
It was as though hearing that he was leaving triggered something.
Huo Zhiyuan slowly opened her eyes.
“She’s awake! President Huo is awake!”
Zhao Jingyu cried out in delight.
Zhang Ran turned around in surprise.
The moment he looked over, he saw that Huo Zhiyuan’s eyes were already fixed on him.
They were perfectly clear.
Not at all like someone who had only just regained consciousness.
“Brother Zhang…”
Her voice was soft, almost timid, like a child who had done something wrong.
Huo Xin, Zhang Siyan, Zhao Jingyu, and Meng Zixuan all stood frozen.
When had they ever seen Huo Zhiyuan like this?
Meng He was the first to react.
“Siyan, aren’t you all hungry? You haven’t eaten properly these past few days. Come on—Uncle Meng is treating everyone to dinner.”
Without waiting for objections, he led the way out.
Zhang Siyan was still bewildered, but Huo Xin and Zhao Jingyu immediately caught on.
“Right, right. I’m starving.”
They quickly followed.
He Yong also stepped outside, though he did not join them.
Instead, he remained by the doorway.
“Uncle He, come eat with us,” Meng Mingxuan invited.
He Yong shook his head.
“You all go ahead. I don’t feel comfortable leaving this place unattended.”
Meng Mingxuan wanted to insist, but Meng He stopped him.
“Fine. I’ll bring something back for you.”
Meng He understood perfectly.
As Zhang Ran’s personal bodyguard, He Yong represented his final line of defense.
Even the slightest disturbance would be enough to keep him at Zhang Ran’s side.
Inside the hospital room, Zhang Ran looked at Huo Zhiyuan, who was hanging her head low.
He snorted.
“Were you awake a long time ago? Watching me make a fool of myself?”
“No, Brother Zhang, that’s not it. Please don’t misunderstand.”
She hurriedly explained.
“Enough, enough. I’m not blaming you. How are you feeling now? Better?”
He gently helped her sit up and rest against the pillows.
“Much better.”
Then she asked cautiously, “Brother Zhang… you’re not angry with me, are you?”
Zhang Ran blinked.
“Angry? Why would I be angry?”
“Because… I didn’t go to pick you up when you returned.”
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
Zhang Ran chuckled.
“I know you had your own reasons.”
“And I’ve seen everything you’ve done during this period.”
“Don’t overthink it.”
As he spoke, he instinctively reached out and ruffled her hair, just as he had when she was a little girl.
Almost instinctively, Huo Zhiyuan narrowed her eyes contentedly.
If Zhao Jingyu and the others had witnessed this expression, their entire worldview would probably have shattered.
“Brother Zhang…”
Huo Zhiyuan suddenly said, “I want to hand Kang Shilan over to Siyan.”
Though she had been acting toward that goal all along, she had never openly discussed it with Zhang Ran.
Now that he was here, she had no intention of hiding it.
Zhang Ran smiled.
“Can you really bear to give away such a massive enterprise?”
“Let me tell you something honestly. If it were anyone else, that would be another matter.”
“But if you want to keep Kang Shilan for yourself, then it’s yours.”
“I won’t take it back.”
His tone was completely serious.
There was no trace of humor in it.
But Huo Zhiyuan shook her head.
“It was always yours to begin with.”
“I merely managed the company while you were away.”
Seeing her insistence, Zhang Ran didn’t argue further.
“Let’s put that discussion aside for now.”
“Siyan is still young. We don’t yet know whether she’s capable of managing a corporation of this size.”
“When she truly has the ability, we can talk about it again.”
Then he sighed.
“There’s something you probably won’t believe.”
“The couple your parents originally intended to sell you to… ended up becoming Siyan’s parents-in-law.”
A bitter smile appeared on his face.
It was impossible to tell whether he was mocking fate, himself, or someone else entirely.
This was the first time Huo Zhiyuan had heard about that matter.
She fell silent for a moment.
Then she lowered her head.
“I’m sorry. This is all because of me.”
Zhang Ran shook his head.
“It’s not your fault.”
“Life simply plays cruel tricks on people.”
“If I hadn’t been soft-hearted back then, none of this would have happened.”
He let out a long sigh.
“Enough about that.”
“Let’s talk about your situation instead.”
His gaze softened with genuine pity.
“What are you planning to do?”
“How will you deal with your parents?”
Determination flashed across Huo Zhiyuan’s eyes.
“I’ll handle it according to the law.”
“What they did amounts to attempted murder.”
“I’m going to report them to the police.”
Clearly, she had already regained consciousness much earlier and had heard everything Zhang Ran said.
Zhang Ran nodded.
Family matters were delicate things, and ordinarily he would avoid interfering.
But if, after everything that had happened, Huo Zhiyuan still chose to forgive them, even he would have found it difficult to accept.
“Do you know why they did it?” he asked.
“What possible benefit could they gain from this?”
Huo Zhiyuan looked equally confused.
She still couldn’t understand why Sun Guilan and the others had chosen this path.
Over the years, she had done everything she possibly could for them.
She had fulfilled every duty and obligation.
Yet they still resorted to poisoning her.
For the first time in her life, she felt completely and utterly disappointed in them.
Originally, she had planned to provide for them and let them live out their old age peacefully.
But now…
She intended to send them to prison for the rest of their lives.
