The more Sun Guilan acted this way, the more uneasy Huo Xin became.
“Move aside. I want to see my sister,” Huo Xin said, no longer willing to waste words with her mother. Unless she saw Huo Zhiyuan with her own eyes, she would never feel at ease.
To everyone’s surprise, Sun Guilan did not stop her this time and allowed her inside. Of course, Zhang Siyan and the others were not given the same treatment and could only wait outside.
As soon as Huo Xin entered, she saw Huo Zhiyuan lying on the bed with a pale face and closed eyes, completely unresponsive to the outside world.
“Sis!”
She hurried over and grabbed her sister’s hand, only to find it ice cold.
“Alright, you’ve seen her. Now go home. She doesn’t need you taking care of her here,” Sun Guilan urged.
Ignoring her, Huo Xin pulled out her phone and prepared to make a call.
“What are you doing?” Sun Guilan snatched the phone away.
“Transferring my sister to another hospital! She’s already in this condition, and you’re still not treating her properly. Are you trying to kill her?” Huo Xin shouted.
“She is in a hospital right now. The doctor said she needs rest and quiet. This is the best place for her,” Sun Guilan replied.
“Give me my phone back, or I’ll call the police,” Huo Xin said sternly.
At the mention of the police, Sun Guilan looked startled at first, but quickly regained her composure. To Huo Xin’s surprise, she actually handed the phone back.
“Go ahead and call them. I’d love to see what you’re planning to do,” Sun Guilan said confidently.
That confidence made Huo Xin hesitate.
She knew her mother well. If Sun Guilan were acting this boldly, it meant she had some kind of backing.
Holding the phone, Huo Xin found herself unable to act.
“Forget the police for now. My sister needs to be transferred immediately!” she said after taking a deep breath.
But Sun Guilan stubbornly refused. In terms of legal authority, a mother’s opinion naturally carried more weight than a younger sister’s.
“Miss Huo, how is she?”
The moment Huo Xin came out, Zhao Jingyu and the others rushed over anxiously.
For a while, Huo Xin said nothing. Her expression was blank, filled with despair.
She suddenly realized that despite all her confidence before returning home—despite promising herself that she would protect her sister—there was actually nothing she could do.
The only thing left was to call the police.
But would that accomplish anything?
Would Sun Guilan really leave behind evidence?
And if she did call the police, would that only enrage their mother further?
No one understood better than Huo Xin just how ruthless that woman could be toward her own daughters.
“I’m sorry, Sis… I’m sorry… I couldn’t protect you. I don’t know what to do anymore.”
Tears streamed down her face.
For the first time, she understood that all her beliefs about being independent and strong were an illusion. She had always been living under her sister’s protection.
Seeing her break down made Zhao Jingyu and the others’ hearts sink.
If even Huo Xin had no solution, then what hope was left?
At that moment, a figure suddenly appeared in Zhao Jingyu’s mind.
Originally, she had ruled him out completely, because he was, after all, an outsider.
But now she realized he might be their only remaining option.
“Miss Huo,” Zhao Jingyu said suddenly, “there may still be one person who can help.”
Like a drowning person grabbing onto a lifeline, Huo Xin immediately asked,
“Who?”
Zhang Siyan and Meng Zixuan also turned toward Zhao Jingyu.
But Zhao Jingyu looked directly at Zhang Siyan.
“Me?” Zhang Siyan pointed at herself, utterly confused.
“No,” Zhao Jingyu said. “Your father.”
“My dad?” Zhang Siyan was even more bewildered.
“You only need to tell Mr. Zhang everything that’s happened. He’ll understand.”
“Mr. Zhang…” Huo Xin murmured.
Then, as if something had clicked, hope appeared in her eyes.
“Do you mean… that person?” she asked expectantly.
She knew that her sister had loved one man her entire life.
His surname was Zhang.
He was the man who had rescued her sister and changed the fate of both sisters.
Zhao Jingyu nodded.
“Yes. Him.”
Zhang Siyan looked between the two women in complete confusion.
Even Meng Zixuan seemed to have suddenly understood something.
Only she, the daughter in question, appeared to know nothing.
But at this point, none of that mattered.
She took out her phone and dialed.
“Siyan.”
Zhang Ran’s weary voice came through the speaker.
“Are you alright?” she asked instinctively.
Pulling himself together, Zhang Ran replied, “I’m fine. Just a little tired after the past few days. Did something happen?”
“Yes. Our company’s President Huo has fallen into a coma.”
She briefly explained everything that had happened.
Then, even through the phone, she could sense a suppressed fury on the other end.
So her father really did know President Huo?
“Wait there,” Zhang Ran said in a low voice. “I’m coming immediately.”
The call ended.
“My dad said he’ll be here right away,” Zhang Siyan told everyone.
At that moment, Zhang Ran was beginning the fourth morning of his stay at the research institute.
After several exhausting days, they had finally sorted out most matters, finalized their plans, and now only needed to wait for the results.
Originally, Zhang Ran had intended to return home as soon as possible to see the two children.
He had never expected something like this to happen to Huo Zhiyuan.
“Uncle Zhang, what happened?” Meng Mingxuan asked immediately.
Meng He also looked over with concern.
“Huo girl has fallen into a coma,” Zhang Ran said, frowning.
“What? Aunt Huo is in a coma? What happened?” Meng Mingxuan asked in shock.
“I don’t know yet. I’m going to see for myself.”
“We’ll come with you,” Meng He said.
Zhang Ran did not refuse.
Together with the father and son, he headed to the address Zhang Siyan had sent.
He Yong silently followed behind him.
He was no stranger to Huo Zhiyuan.
Back then, he had accompanied Zhang Ran when they had “bought” her freedom. Among everyone around Zhang Ran, only He Yong had maintained close contact with her over the years.
When they arrived, Zhang Ran saw the men gathered at the entrance and immediately frowned.
Even without hearing the full story, he now understood that this matter was far from simple.
“Sorry. No entry allowed,” one of the burly men said, deliberately showing off the tattoos on his body.
What he failed to notice, however, was that his boss, Zhao Hu, had already shrunk into his chair the moment Zhang Ran and He Yong appeared, desperately hoping that Zhang Ran wouldn’t notice him at all.
