Zhou Hai rushed straight to the screen. The shock he felt made it hard for him to recover for quite a while. Yang Duxiu had European ancestry in his genes, but from his appearance, you really couldn’t tell at all!
Right—his hair. His gray-white hair had always been assumed to be due to age, but now it seemed that wasn’t the case. That was simply his natural hair color.
Thinking of this, Zhou Hai grabbed Sister Zeng’s hand, visibly excited.
“Sister Zeng, help me print out this comparison result. All my known conditions were scattered and fragmented, but this report is the thread that connects everything. Thank you so much.”
Sister Zeng slapped his hand away.
“You’re such a good young man, but you’ve been led astray by Xu Biao. Wait here, I’ll print it for you!”
Grabbing the report along with the printed comparison chart, Zhou Hai rushed out the door, still waving goodbye to Sister Zeng.
After leaving the inspection department, Zhou Hai went straight back to the office and immediately called Huang Zhongsheng. The phone rang for a long time with no answer. Just as he was about to hang up, Huang Zhongsheng called back.
“Hey, Hai Zi, what’s wrong?”
“Have you investigated Yang Duxiu from the Third Hospital?”
Xu Biao, who was nearby, immediately looked up with a serious expression. Since Zhou Hai had rushed back from the lab and called Huang Zhongsheng so urgently, it must mean there was a major discovery. Could it be…?
“I’ve already sent people to investigate and also stationed people at the Third Hospital. No results yet, but we should hear back later. What’s going on? Any progress?”
Zhou Hai explained the DNA findings to Huang Zhongsheng. For a moment, the person on the other end didn’t react. Xu Biao, however, was the first to respond—he shot up from his seat.
“Hai Zi, are you saying Yang Duxiu is of Jewish or German descent, which explains his financial resources, and that the emblem and German words were his work? Th-this is too unbelievable!”
Huang Zhongsheng, on the other end, wasn’t as shocked as Xu Biao. As long as there was a direction, it was good. No matter how unbelievable it sounded, without real investigation there was no basis for judgment.
“I’ll go there myself now. Once your investigation has results, inform me immediately.”
He hung up.
Xu Biao was still in shock, but he trusted that Zhou Hai would never fabricate anything. If he said so, he must have his reasoning. Thinking of this, he quickly stood up.
“Hai Zi, what do we do now?”
Zhou Hai shook his head.
“There’s no evidence yet. Everything we have are just assumptions and suspicions. We can’t do anything. We can only wait for Huang Zhongsheng’s investigation results.”
Xu Biao looked serious, grabbed Zhou Hai’s arm, and pulled him toward the door.
“If we’re going to wait, we’re not waiting here. Let’s go find them and head to the Third Hospital together. If anything happens, we won’t have to rush over later.”
With that, he dragged Zhou Hai out of the office.
Meanwhile, Huang Zhongsheng hung up the phone, turned the car around, and headed straight for the Third Hospital while calling Da Zhao.
“How’s your investigation going?”
Da Zhao lowered his usually loud voice:
“Xiao Zhan and the others are keeping watch. Nothing unusual so far. But from our investigation, this Yang Duxiu really did go through some things back then.
He used to be an orthopedic surgeon. He graduated as a master’s student 26 years ago and was a top talent at the time. After arriving at the Third Hospital, he helped establish the orthopedic department.
Then in 1993, a patient came in with an arm severed and needed reattachment surgery. That kind of technique was rare back then. Yang Duxiu performed the operation, and the recovery went very well.
But that also got him into trouble, because the person who cut off the arm was a gangster-type figure called ‘Hong Haier.’
That man went to Yang Duxiu and demanded that he surgically sever the patient’s arm completely, or else he would make him suffer.
Yang Duxiu was just an academic and didn’t understand these underworld threats, so he ignored it at first. Later, his home windows were smashed, and his wife was pushed and injured when returning home at night.
He then reported it to the police, and the police protected him for a period of time, but Hong Haier never showed up again.
Half a year later, one day after work, Yang Duxiu was ambushed, knocked unconscious, and thrown into a dry well. His right hand was burned with acid, and his right leg was slashed. Even after multiple surgeries, his leg could only barely function, but his hand was completely ruined.
The police investigated for a long time, but due to lack of evidence, the case was eventually closed.”
Huang Zhongsheng narrowed his eyes and asked, “Is the information you found verified? Is it accurate?”
Da Zhao scratched his head.
“It’s accurate! I checked with retired staff from the Third Hospital. They still remember it clearly. The hospital was quite reputable back then, but later declined due to limited development. Also, Yang Duxiu’s wife later ran off with their child, taking all their savings with her. Rumor has it she went abroad with another man.
He was disabled, and his wife took everything and left him. That guy really had it rough.
What’s more, everyone could see that Hong Haier was likely behind it, but there was no evidence. The person Yang Duxiu treated—the one with the severed arm—also disappeared afterward. No one knows whether he’s dead or hiding somewhere, but he never showed up again.”
“Who was the officer in charge of that case back then?” Huang Zhongsheng asked.
Da Zhao paused.
“Wait, I just checked the system… where is it… oh, found it. The lead investigator was a police officer named Zhou Zhiguo.
But this was 22 years ago. I couldn’t find any records of Zhou Zhiguo in the system. Even if I did find someone with that name, the age doesn’t match.”
Hearing this, Huang Zhongsheng froze. Confusion appeared on his face, but his foot stayed on the accelerator, pressing even harder.
“What do you mean you can’t find him? Didn’t you ask Secretary Xu? He’s an old-timer—he might remember people like this.”
Da Zhao suddenly realized.
“Oh right, I forgot. I’ll call him later. But from what I’ve seen of the case, there really wasn’t any solid evidence proving that Hong Haier was the culprit.
Even though it strongly felt like he was controlling everything behind the scenes, there was no proof. You know, 22 years ago there weren’t surveillance cameras everywhere like today. Even now with cameras people still find loopholes, let alone back then.
Besides, Hong Haier had an alibi—he was playing mahjong with witnesses everywhere. Many people saw it. He was even taken in by patrol officers for questioning due to a fight, which served as strong supporting evidence.
And Yang Duxiu himself couldn’t identify who knocked him unconscious, let alone who burned his hand with concentrated sulfuric acid. He was lucky someone passed by and smelled something strange, otherwise he might not have survived.”
Now Huang Zhongsheng had a clear understanding of the case background. But the clearer it became, the more he felt Zhou Hai’s suspicion might not be unfounded. A man like that would naturally have many enemies.
“Stop rambling. Do two things immediately:
First, go ask Secretary Xu about Zhou Zhiguo’s information.
Second, keep a close watch on Yang Duxiu. If he runs, I’ll skin you alive.”
Da Zhao looked wronged and wanted to argue, but held it back.
“Yes, I guarantee completion of the mission.”
He hung up and patted Xiao Zhan beside him.
“You don’t need long-distance surveillance anymore. Switch to close monitoring of Yang Duxiu. The boss says he’s a key suspect. Watch everything he does—and don’t let him escape!”
Just as he finished speaking, Xiao Zhan suddenly pointed out the window in surprise.
“Eh?! It’s not even five yet—why is Yang Duxiu coming out already? Did he sense something?”
