SFTD -Chapter 377 White Spot Reappears (Part 18)

Speaking for the Dead6 min read378 of 429

Zhang Wenqi’s voice carried a trace of regret as he said:

“All of these funds were transferred from a Swiss account. We ran a comparison, and this account also sent money to Zhang Mingquan from Migao. But getting detailed information about this account won’t be easy.”

Zhou Hai nodded. If it could be traced instantly, it wouldn’t match the killer’s level of intelligence. However, the fact that the same account was involved already proved it was the same person behind everything.

What concerned him more was the duration—how long had this operation been maintained? Could it be that the mastermind had already been using Dong Bin as an asset for a long time? If so, what exactly was Dong Bin working for?

Was it only to manufacture those iron pipe daggers?

Yet there had been no reports of poisoning cases or murders involving iron pipe daggers before.

“Got it. Tell the economic investigation team to continue tracking the account as much as possible. Since there’s an outgoing source, there must also be incoming funds. Otherwise, how could it sustain such high expenses?”

Zhang Wenqi sighed.

“The economic crime unit is already investigating, but Swiss banks don’t provide account information. They can only trace it through indirect means, which takes time—not something that can be done in three or five days.”

“I understand. Let them continue. You go find Luo Yunfeng.”

Zhou Hai hung up and immediately dialed Fengzi’s number. After two rings, the call connected.

“Chief.”

“How’s your progress?”

Luo Yunfeng opened a document.

“The victim Dong Bin’s social circle isn’t large. We’ve found over twenty frequently contacted phone numbers, and we’re verifying them one by one.

But among them, he had frequent contact with Fang Jianguo. Most of the calls were made by Fang Jianguo.

The rest include several shareholders of the machinery factory, as well as suppliers of raw materials and equipment. However, there is one number that isn’t frequently contacted and we haven’t identified yet. It’s not registered under real-name authentication.

Moreover, that number only has call records with Dong Bin—meaning one person was using it exclusively to contact him.”

Zhou Hai’s eyes darkened slightly as he tightened his grip on the phone.

“Have you traced the origin of this SIM card?”

Luo Yunfeng flipped through the records again.

“Yes. It’s a student SIM card sold at a small shop near the Agricultural College. It started being used this January. Brother Mao and the others have already sent people there.”

“Then investigate it thoroughly. Also, find out whether Dong Bin always had such an unregistered number contacting him every year. And what about the victim’s family—any useful information?”

“The wife came. We questioned her, but there was no useful information. Their relationship was strained. She only knew Dong Bin came from Xinjiang, but his family had never been seen. He only went back home by himself once a year.”

Luo Yunfeng then repeated Zhu Cuiwen’s original statement. Zhou Hai thought for a moment.

“What about the child?”

“Did you ask?”

Luo Yunfeng paused, confused.

“The child is from Zhu Cuiwen’s previous marriage, so we didn’t ask.”

Zhou Hai shook his head.

“If he went home every week just for that child, and even sent him to such an expensive elite school, then his relationship with the child must be very good.”

Luo Yunfeng found the reasoning convincing.

“Alright, I’ll go to the school with Brother Mao.”

“Wait. School has already started today. There are usually exams at the beginning of term. Go tomorrow night or the night after. Don’t interfere with the child’s studies.”

Zhou Hai hung up.

Xu Biao walked over from behind.

“Are those two people being sent back?”

Zhou Hai nodded.

“Call Da Liu. We’re leaving.”

They headed out. Xu Biao quickly ran back into the meeting room to make arrangements. After all, it wouldn’t look good to simply leave without proper explanation to the assisting local unit.

Da Liu was dragged out as well.

Once in the car, he immediately asked: “What did you find?”

Zhou Hai didn’t answer, his eyes lowered in thought.

Xu Biao sighed.

“I was just saying, but you really just left after asking for assistance. You don’t even say a word—how are we supposed to cooperate in the future?”

Da Liu finally seemed to understand and nodded.

“So now what? Where are we going? Are we not investigating anymore?”

Xu Biao rolled his eyes.

“Back to Dongnan. The only clues in Jinzou are those two people.”

Zhou Hai finally opened his eyes and said to Old Wang in the driver’s seat: “Go directly back to the center.”

Da Liu looked wronged.

“What about me?”

Xu Biao glared at him.

“Cooked and eaten.”

Two hours later, Zhou Hai and Xu Biao returned to the center. Da Liu was left at the information department.

They hurried back to the office.

“Xu Biao, did you send the hair sample I gave you for testing yesterday?”

Xu Biao froze.

“Hair? What hair?”

“The sample from Old Yang. I gave it to you after we returned from the Third Hospital.”

Xu Biao quickly searched his forensic kit. After digging through it, he finally found the evidence bag wedged in a crevice. He wiped the sweat from his forehead.

“My god… I almost forgot. I’ll send it now.”

He was about to run out when Zhou Hai stopped him.

“Call Director Huang directly. Tell him to send someone to keep an eye on the Third Hospital. If anything unusual happens, we need to know immediately. Also have him look into why Yang Duxiu was splashed with sulfuric acid back then.”

Xu Biao nodded and left.

Zhou Hai turned back to the whiteboard, his thoughts jumping between the pieces of information.

A person willing to casually spend five to six million, just to carry out instructions—what was he trying to do?

Playing with lives? Acting as God?

And what did this have to do with him? Was it simply because he was investigating this case?

Zhou Hai returned to his desk and opened a locked drawer, taking out an old notebook—his father’s professional case notes, a compiled record of cases he had handled. Zhou Hai had found it while cleaning out the old house. He began reading carefully.

At 4:30 p.m., his phone rang. It was Sister Zeng—likely the results were out.

He answered.

Sister Zeng did not joke as usual; her tone was serious and slightly puzzled.

“Zhou Hai, the DNA result you asked for is out. Are you planning a comparison or what?”

“Please wait, I’ll come over now.”

Xu Biao was on a call with Dr. Nan, so Zhou Hai didn’t call him. He went alone to the third floor.

Sister Zeng opened the door herself and handed him the report.

“This is just a DNA test report. I compared samples from Dong Bin’s case, the Migao poisoning case, and the Xixi case scene evidence. There were no matches, not even similarities. I don’t understand your intention.”

Zhou Hai flipped through it briefly and set it down.

“I don’t really know what I’m looking for either. I just feel this person is unusual. This case involves things we haven’t seen before—like the hexagram symbol, and a German word…”

Sister Zeng paused, then quickly opened a comparison interface and dragged the DNA data in.

Soon, the system began running.

After about a minute, it stopped. A result appeared:

28% of the main genetic sequence matches the Semitic-Hamitic subgroup of the European population.

Sister Zeng froze.

“…This—this is a foreigner?”
