SFTD -Chapter 379 White Spots Reappear (20)

Speaking for the Dead6 min read380 of 429

Following Xiao Zhan’s line of sight, Da Zhao also looked outside.

Sure enough, Yang Duxiu was limping out of the hospital.

However, his condition looked very poor. His steps were unsteady, and he staggered as he moved toward the hospital gate.

Da Zhao immediately grew anxious. Just moments ago, Huang Zhongsheng had called and repeatedly emphasized that they must keep a close watch on this man. Now, seeing him moving so hastily—as if he had discovered something—he looked like he was trying to escape.

Da Zhao slapped Xiao Zhan on the back and shouted:

“What the hell are you standing there for? Follow him! If we lose him, I’ll rip your damn head off!”

Xiao Zhan jumped in fright and quickly grabbed the intercom on the table.

“Unit 2 and 3, this is Unit 1! Follow the target! Follow the target! His intention is unclear for now! Do not lose him, maintain a distance of 20 meters!”

He put on his jacket while speaking and rushed out with Da Zhao. They got into the car and tried to pursue Yang Duxiu, but when they looked up again, they realized he hadn’t gone far—he had simply stepped onto a pedestrian overpass.

Because of the trees blocking the view, they soon lost sight of him.

Da Zhao didn’t need to shout—Xiao Zhan was already anxious. But seeing their teammates still following behind gave him some relief.

Xiao Zhan quickly scanned the surroundings, then pulled Da Zhao toward the other side of the overpass. The two of them ran up the bridge.

The overpass was old and worn down, not the modern type with a roof. Much of its paint had peeled off, and rust spots were everywhere.

Yang Duxiu seemed either unwell or lost in thought. He crouched near a damaged section of the railing, idly shaking a broken wire. After a few tries, the wire snapped.

He looked down beneath the bridge. His body leaned dangerously far out.

Xiao Zhan panicked and signaled Da Zhao to stop. Too many people would create pressure on the suspect. He carefully moved forward alone.

Sensing someone approaching, Yang Duxiu turned his head and glanced at Xiao Zhan, a faint smile on his face.

In the next moment, he shifted sideways and slipped through the broken gap in the railing—falling straight down.

Xiao Zhan froze completely.

He grabbed the railing and looked down.

Bang!

Bang!

Two loud crashes rang out in succession.

Before Yang Duxiu even hit the ground, a box truck struck him and sent him flying. He spun several times before falling again, only to be hit once more by a cement mixer truck, which pinned him against the roadside guardrail.

The driver panicked and swerved away.

The entire road erupted into chaos—multiple collisions followed, and at least ten vehicles were involved.

Da Zhao climbed over the railing and rushed down first. He ran straight into the center of the scene and immediately called traffic emergency services (122), briefly reporting the situation.

At that moment, the cement truck driver tried to get out, but Xiao Zhan and the others arrived, slammed the door shut, and showed their police badges to the crowd.

“Don’t move! Everyone stay where you are! Don’t disturb the scene or you’ll be in trouble!”

Xiao Zhan’s voice was firm—but not for show.

This situation was humiliating. He had expected to make a breakthrough today, but instead, Yang Duxiu had “solved the problem himself” by literally jumping off the bridge. What was he even doing?

He had just promised Da Zhao they would handle it properly, and now this had happened.

Da Zhao felt even more frustrated, but there was no point in complaining now. The man was dead—that was fact. The priority was to inform Huang Zhongsheng.

He dialed immediately. The call was answered almost instantly.

“Hello? Why are you calling so eagerly? What happened?”

“Boss… Yang Duxiu jumped off the overpass and was hit to death by vehicles…”

Less than ten minutes later, Zhou Hai and Xu Biao arrived at the scene.

The road was completely blocked. Even with sirens on, the police car could not pass.

Zhou Hai patted Old Wang’s seat.

“Don’t force it. Stop here. The scene is ahead—we walk.”

He opened the door, grabbed his forensic kit, and rushed out. Xu Biao followed closely, shouting while showing his ID to clear the crowd.

“Make way! Make way!”

Zhou Hai’s mind felt blank, as if a faint light had just appeared in darkness—only to be crushed immediately. The light disappeared, direction was lost, and a suffocating helplessness took over.

They pushed through the crowd and reached the scene.

The area had already been cordoned off. Crowds still gathered on the bridge and in nearby shops, refusing to leave despite police attempts to disperse them.

Traffic police were clearing damaged vehicles. The center of the crash had been opened up, except for the cement truck still parked by the guardrail. A mangled mass of flesh could vaguely be seen.

Zhou Hai bit his lip.

From his fingertips to his tongue, everything felt numb. He could not believe Yang Duxiu would do something like this. He refused to believe it—but the body was right there.

Huang Zhongsheng approached them with a grave expression, his face heavy with guilt.

“Zhou Hai… I’m sorry.”

“Da Zhao and Xiao Zhan were watching him. He came out of the Third Hospital, went straight onto the overpass, and jumped through a damaged gap. That triggered the chain collision.”

Zhou Hai shook his head.

“Don’t apologize. We still haven’t confirmed whether he was the real mastermind. Let me take a look first.”

Without waiting for a response, he walked forward with his equipment and put on protective gear. Xu Biao gave Huang Zhongsheng a helpless smile.

“Zhou Hai is about to break down. Please bear with him.”

Huang Zhongsheng shook his head, eyes slightly moist.

“I should be the one apologizing. Stop comforting me—go help.”

Xu Biao quickly ran to Zhou Hai’s side. Already suited up, he gestured.

“I’ll go take photos and collect samples first.”

Zhou Hai nodded slightly.

Xu Biao approached the body. Even though he was mentally prepared, the real scene still made his heart tighten. He forced himself not to retch, took a deep breath, adjusted his mask, and began photographing.

One arm had been severed and hung on the box truck. He carefully photographed it and bagged it as evidence.

Then he moved toward the cement truck and guardrail area.

What remained was no longer recognizable as a human being at first glance.

After closer inspection, he realized the victim’s head had been completely embedded into the truck’s front bumper.

Xu Biao took rapid photographs, the shutter clicking continuously.

After finishing, Zhou Hai came over.

Looking at the embedded body, he frowned deeply. Either they would have to dismantle the bumper, or dismember the remains—otherwise it couldn’t be removed.

Xu Biao noticed a metal rod on the ground and suddenly had an idea.

“Zhou Hai, don’t rush. I’ll get someone to pry open the bumper.”

He waved toward Da Zhao.

Da Zhao was staring at Zhou Hai’s work when he noticed Xu Biao signaling him. He pointed at himself uncertainly.

Xu Biao nodded firmly.

Da Zhao sighed and walked over reluctantly. Xu Biao patted his shoulder and raised his eyebrows.

“Hurry up. Find someone to use a rod like this to pry open the bumper. Otherwise we’ll waste even more time—and before long, the whole city will see this news. Do you want to get scolded? Or be blamed for everything?”
