SFTD -Chapter 335 Enough Already?

Speaking for the Dead6 min read336 of 429

Two hours later, outside the emergency room of Luda Hospital, Zhou Hai stood waiting in place.

After a while, Dr. He came out from inside. He looked at Zhou Hai and shook his head slightly. Zhou Hai immediately walked over.

Dr. He pulled down his mask and said, “You were right.”

“Inside the lidocaine, there was a large dose of PCP mixed with some psychiatric drugs.”

“And it was injected directly into the lumbar spine. I’m currently working on diluting the drug concentration and observing the later effects.”

“If recovery goes well, she might still be able to stand. If not…”

Zhou Hai nodded. This was exactly what he was most worried about. When they had flipped Wang Pei’s body earlier, he had noticed she had already lost control of her bodily functions. With normal anesthesia—even an overdose—such a rapid reaction was unlikely.

Unless the drug’s effects had accelerated everything.

It seemed Qin Tianhe’s intent to kill Wang Pei was extremely firm. The drug used on Wang Xuchao’s coffee was the same. Fortunately, he had only drunk a small amount; otherwise, even biting his tongue wouldn’t have been enough to stay conscious.

“Thank you. I’ll leave things here to you. If anything is needed, ask our colleagues stationed here to assist. I’m going to orthopedics to check on Wang Xuchao.”

Dr. He smiled.

“Go check on that ‘live treasure’ then.”

“He’s already past the drug reaction phase, but he’s still a bit confused. He doesn’t even know why he’s in the hospital and keeps making a fuss.”

Hearing this, Zhou Hai felt a headache coming on. Wang Xuchao really needed to suffer a loss once. He was too impulsive—if they hadn’t discovered it in time, they would have fallen from the building.

Dr. He handed a bag of X-rays to Zhou Hai.

“These are his scans. You can explain them to him. He’s probably causing a scene upstairs. Orthopedics is short-staffed due to a major traffic accident, so please understand.”

With that, Dr. He patted Zhou Hai on the shoulder and left.

Zhou Hai walked helplessly toward the inpatient surgical building.

As soon as he entered the orthopedics ward, he saw Xiao Liu and two officers from the western district standing in the hallway.

Xiao Liu noticed him from a distance and hurried over, the tension and panic on his face easing slightly.

“Dr. Zhou, you’re here. Our captain is inside shouting nonstop—we don’t know if it’s pain or what. We’re just standing here helpless.”

Zhou Hai nodded and walked toward the room.

Inside the treatment room, a doctor had already put a cast on Wang Xuchao. However, he kept flailing his other arm—knocking pillows aside, kicking the cart at the foot of the bed—his entire body extremely agitated.

Zhou Hai immediately recognized it was the effect of PCP.

He pushed the door open. The doctor inside had just hung up the phone and looked at Zhou Hai with a knowing expression.

“You’re Dr. Zhou, right?”

Zhou Hai nodded.

The doctor said, “Then I’ll hand this patient over to you for now. At this rate, he’s going to keep causing trouble for a while.”

“Alright. What’s his room number? Please have a nurse come help us.”

The doctor agreed without hesitation and made a call.

Soon, two nurses arrived. They unlocked the bed’s restraints and pushed him toward the eastern ward.

Xiao Liu and the others carried Wang Xuchao onto the bed, exhausted.

Seeing him a bit calmer, Xiao Liu asked, “Dr. Zhou, how long is our captain going to sleep?”

Zhou Hai glanced at his watch.

“It’s 5:30 p.m. now. Based on the drug’s half-life, he should wake up in about two hours at the earliest.”

“You can go get something to eat. You’ll still need people to take care of him tonight.”

“Also, now that the truth is basically clear, have his family been notified?”

Xiao Liu nodded.

“I called his wife the moment I was on my way here. She should be arriving soon.”

Zhou Hai checked the IV drip speed and examined Wang Xuchao’s pupils.

Just then, the door opened and a woman rushed in, panicked, throwing herself to the bedside and grabbing Wang Xuchao.

She looked at Xiao Liu.

“Thank you, Xiao Liu…”

After Xiao Liu briefly explained the situation, the woman kept nodding. Then she grabbed Zhou Hai’s arm, tears welling in her eyes.

“You’re Zhou Hai, right? Xuchao always mentions you.”

“I’m not good with words, but today I want to thank you on behalf of my son.”

“Thank you for your persistence. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have had a father anymore.”

Her words were simple, unpolished, without any embellishment. Zhou Hai smiled faintly and waved his hand.

“No need to thank me. I believe in Wang Xuchao’s character. He deserves our trust.”

“Since you’re here, we’ll head back to the police team. They’re still conducting interrogations.”

The woman was very reasonable. She didn’t even ask Xiao Liu to stay. She simply followed Zhou Hai’s instructions and sent everyone away. Having her husband safe and whole in front of her meant more than anything else.

After leaving the ward, Zhou Hai suddenly felt a wave of darkness in front of his eyes. He grabbed Xiao Liu’s arm.

“I won’t go to the interrogation. I need to sleep. I haven’t slept for days.”

Before he could finish speaking, Zhou Hai collapsed toward the wall.

Xiao Liu and the others panicked and reached out to catch him—but someone rushed in faster and pushed them aside.

The person knelt down and caught Zhou Hai, then slapped his face repeatedly.

“What’s wrong with you?”

“Wake up!”

Looking up at the stunned Xiao Liu, the person shouted, “Are you idiots? Call a doctor!”

It was Chu Menghan.

Xiao Liu snapped back to reality and ran to the doctor’s office. Soon, doctors and nurses rushed over and moved Zhou Hai onto a treatment bed.

Xiao Liu kept stealing glances at Chu Menghan. The earlier hostility was gone—completely replaced by concern.

Anyone could tell she deeply cared about Zhou Hai.

The doctor checked him over but found nothing abnormal.

However, seeing the female officer with a row of rank insignia on her shoulders glaring fiercely at him, he felt pressured and said to a nurse, “Call Dr. He from emergency for a consultation. I’m not comfortable handling this alone.”

Chu Menghan’s expression tightened.

Not long after, Dr. He rushed in.

“What’s wrong with Zhou Hai now? Am I officially assigned to your police department today?”

Chu Menghan looked at Zhou Hai on the bed, her tone urgent: “He suddenly fainted in the corridor. We couldn’t wake him no matter what. Sir, Please check him quickly.”
