Xiao Liu shrank his neck slightly.
Damn… did Chu Menghan just address someone as “sir”?!
Unbelievable—she actually used honorifics?!
Tsk tsk… today is really eye-opening.
Dr. He rushed over immediately, asking his assistant to measure Zhou Hai’s blood pressure. He pried open Zhou Hai’s eyelids for a quick check, then picked up a stethoscope and listened carefully. But he found nothing abnormal.
The assistant reported a set of numbers.
“Blood pressure 70/100. Slightly low.”
Dr. He nodded. This level wasn’t enough to cause fainting. Then, as if thinking of something, he waved his hand.
“Quick blood glucose test. Then draw blood and run a full panel of tests.”
The assistant quickly complied and drew blood. A full examination required at least four tubes.
Chu Menghan watched as tube after tube was taken, her eyes practically spitting fire. When the fourth tube was connected to the needle—
She snapped.
“Is this going to end or what?!”
“Keep doing this and even if he wakes up, you’ll bleed him dry! Figure out the cause of the fainting first—what are you even doing?!”
The assistant’s hand shook so badly the tube almost fell.
Dr. He gestured calmly. The assistant quickly fetched a glucose meter, placed a drop of blood on the test strip, and performed a rapid check.
Beep.
Numbers appeared instantly.
Dr. He’s expression relaxed.
“Alright, don’t panic. It’s hypoglycemia-induced syncope. He’s probably been overworked, exhausted, and hasn’t eaten or rested. His blood sugar is too low—his body is running beyond capacity. No need to transfer departments. Treat him right here.”
Chu Menghan had no objections.
After issuing instructions, Dr. He left. The nurse, already familiar with Chu Menghan’s “roaring tigress” reputation, hurried to start the IV for Zhou Hai.
Xiao Liu and the others were chased out by Chu Menghan. Soon, the large ward was left with only Zhou Hai lying on the bed—and Chu Menghan sitting beside him.
She sent a brief message to the bureau chief, reporting the situation, then quietly watched the IV drip.
The calmness softened her heart.
She looked at Zhou Hai’s face—his sunken cheeks made him look even thinner than before. After the death of Xixi and the series of major cases afterward, Zhou Hai had been working like a machine, never stopping.
She gently raised her hand and touched his face. The cool skin made her heart ache.
She suddenly thought of the scene outside the Old Soldier KTV—the distant, withdrawn look in Zhou Hai’s eyes. That pain tightened her chest.
He must have been deeply hurt then… but for the sake of the investigation, she had to step away.
Thinking of this, Chu Menghan rested her head on Zhou Hai’s shoulder and slowly closed her eyes. The exhaustion of days of worry overwhelmed her, and she drifted off to sleep.
……
Night fell. Lights came on.
Two hurried figures rushed into the orthopedic ward.
The little girl in front grabbed a nurse anxiously.
“Nurse sister, where is the forensic doctor named Zhou Hai? Which ward is he in?”
The nurse—who had been the one handling his IV earlier—recognized her and asked:
“Are you family of Doctor Zhou?”
“I’m his sister.”
The nurse led them to the ward entrance. The visitors were the little girl and Uncle Lu.
“There’s a female police leader inside, taking care of him. She looks very worried about his condition.”
The little girl frowned. Uncle Lu looked confused, adjusting his glasses while holding two thermos containers in one hand.
“A female leader? Who?”
“I know who it is!” the little girl said immediately. “It’s that beautiful Chu woman who always tries to pursue Zhou Zhou. Thank you, nurse sister!”
She smiled sweetly. The nurse waved and left, glancing back a few times—clearly having picked up far too much information.
After thinking it over, the nurse concluded it was probably true. That woman’s sharp gaze and explosive temper… it really did look like someone deeply concerned about someone she liked.
Uncle Lu stopped the little girl from opening the door.
“If someone is already taking care of him, maybe we should—”
The little girl snorted, clearly unhappy.
“Humph! Zhou Zhou can be with anyone—but not her. I don’t approve!”
She immediately pushed the door open.
Inside, the ward was dim. Light from the corridor spilled in, not enough to illuminate the entire room. Uncle Lu found the switch and turned on the lights.
The room brightened instantly.
There were two beds. The northern one was empty.
Zhou Hai lay on the southern bed.
At his bedside, a person was slumped over, holding his hand—deeply asleep.
As they approached, the little girl exploded in anger.
The IV bottle was already empty. The tube even showed blood reflux.
This is care?!
Or is this “sleeping with Zhou Zhou”?
Clearly the second interpretation looked more convincing.
Uncle Lu reached to wake them, but the little girl stopped him. She pressed the call button.
Soon, the same nurse rushed back.
“What happened?”
The little girl pointed at the IV bottle.
“It’s empty!”
The nurse checked the chart, quickly removed the needle, and glanced at Chu Menghan with apology.
“This was the last bag… and there was someone here, so we didn’t…”
The little girl waved her hand, signaling she understood. The nurse quickly left.
Neither Zhou Hai nor Chu Menghan woke up during the commotion.
Uncle Lu sighed inwardly. Both of them were clearly exhausted.
But looking at the woman sleeping there, he couldn’t bring himself to like her. He even had the same thought as the little girl: “My son-in-law has been slept with.”
So even though he knew the little girl was about to cause trouble, he didn’t stop her.
“Zhou Zhou, what’s wrong with you?”
The little girl suddenly spread her arms and lunged at Zhou Hai.
She landed directly on him—but her arms were wide open, so Chu Menghan, who was sleeping at the bedside, was also struck.
Her hand accidentally slapped Chu Menghan’s head.
Startled, Chu Menghan instinctively reacted. Half-asleep, she twisted around and grabbed the girl’s arm, locking it behind her back and pressing her down beside Zhou Hai.
For someone so small, the girl had no chance.
A sharp “crack” sounded from her shoulder joint.
“Ah—!!!”
The scream pierced directly into Zhou Hai’s ear.
His eyelids trembled.
He slowly woke up.
At the same time, Uncle Lu snapped.
“Stop it! Let her go!”
That familiar voice and the scream fully woke Chu Menghan.
She looked at Uncle Lu, then at the girl beneath her, and immediately released her grip.
But it was too late—the girl’s arm was already injured and couldn’t move.
Zhou Hai opened his eyes just in time to see utter chaos.
The little girl was crying on his shoulder, tears streaming onto his face.
Chu Menghan stood beside the bed, frozen and awkward.
Uncle Lu stood nearby, angrily scolding someone.
For a moment, Zhou Hai’s mind went completely blank.
What… exactly is happening here?
Did I wake up the wrong way?
