“What are you still sitting there for? Want to embarrass yourself even more? Get moving!”
Su Ruo had just sat down on the sofa and finally exhaled a sigh of relief when she heard Xie Yuechen’s cold snort and sharp tone.
“Fine, let’s go! But I’m telling you, you’d better not let me catch you having too much fun out there. Otherwise, I won’t let it go. Hmph!”
Su Ruo shot to her feet and snapped back without hesitation. After delivering her line with a cold smirk, she turned and marched out of the Imperial City.
Su Ruo wasn’t foolish. The moment Xie Yuechen reprimanded her earlier, she had already sensed something was off. She didn’t have time to think it through at the time, but her body had instinctively responded to the cues he gave. His odd behavior made her wary. No matter what was happening, she couldn’t risk ruining his plan.
His unusual demeanor, and the unease she felt from that Dragon guy—none of it made sense to her. But since Xie Yuechen was still keeping up appearances, she knew this wasn’t the place to talk. No matter how confused she was inside, she didn’t show a hint of it and kept playing her role as the domineering, unreasonable wife.
Whatever the case, the first priority was to get out of there. Her legs were so tense they felt weak.
Once inside the car, Su Ruo finally let out a real sigh of relief and collapsed into the seat, her body going limp.
Xie Yuechen started the car without a word. He focused solely on driving, not sparing Su Ruo a glance. The silence in the car was stifling, almost suffocating.
After composing herself a bit, Su Ruo wanted to ask him what had just happened. But when she turned to look, she immediately sensed something was very wrong. The oppressive air was practically crushing. Even if she were slow to catch on, she would still realize—Xie Yuechen was angry.
That cold expression, those tightly pressed lips—everything screamed of his fury.
Was he angry that she came without permission? Or because she nearly ruined his plan just now?
Seeing him like this, Su Ruo’s courage started to falter. Usually, she wasn’t afraid to argue or joke around, because she knew he wouldn’t get mad at her. But now, faced with his real anger, all her boldness vanished. She felt both scared and guilty. She had been reckless—if not for his quick thinking earlier, everything would’ve been exposed and ruined.
She had come here so cheerfully, thinking she’d surprise him. But it turned out to be a scare instead. Now, the dead silence in the car was driving her crazy with anxiety.
Neither of them said a word. The air inside the car seemed frozen in time, with only their breathing reminding them they were still there.
While Su Ruo was lost in a spiral of regret and panic, her phone rang. The soft ringtone, usually pleasant, now sounded jarringly loud in the silent car.
She pulled out her phone and her heart skipped a beat—it was her mother-in-law.
“Hello, Mom.” Su Ruo didn’t hesitate for long before answering. But the moment she spoke, a wave of regret washed over her. If she had known it would turn out like this, why had she gone to such lengths to come here?
“Ruo Ruo, are you okay? Your voice doesn’t sound right.” Shen Liang immediately picked up on the sadness in her tone, and her heart jumped in worry. Had something happened?
“I’m fine, really. What could happen to me?” Su Ruo took a deep breath and tried to adjust her mood, forcing her voice to sound cheerful. “I’m fine, don’t worry. Please let Dad know, too. Yue Hui dropped me off and already flew back—he should be landing soon.”
Xie Yuechen glanced sideways at Su Ruo as she forced a smile while talking on the phone. He sighed quietly but still said nothing, eyes fixed on the road.
For the first time in his life, he felt powerless. He was both scared and angry, emotions churning inside him with nowhere to go—so he stayed silent.
“But you really don’t sound okay. Where are you now?” Shen Liang asked, frowning in concern. “Are you with Yuechen?”
“Yeah, I’m in the car with the commander.” As she spoke, Su Ruo quickly glanced at Xie Yuechen, who was still staring straight ahead, completely ignoring her, as if he hadn’t heard a word. Her heart sank.
“Really? Did you two have a fight?” Shen Liang’s worry deepened. Su Ruo had sounded so excited when she left—why did things change the moment she arrived?
“No, nothing like that, Mom. Don’t overthink it. Isn’t it time for your spa appointment? You should go. I’m really fine, just a little tired because I didn’t eat much after arriving.” Her expression was full of loss, but she forced herself to sound upbeat and even curled her lips into a smile, trying to prove she was okay.
Hearing that, Shen Liang relaxed a little. Assuming her daughter-in-law was just tired, she reminded them to grab something to eat before returning to the base.
After hanging up, Su Ruo sent a few messages to Zhang Huaqing and He Wen, letting them know she’d arrived and met up with Xie Yuechen, so they didn’t need to worry.
Once that was done, she put her phone back in her bag and sat with her head lowered, fidgeting with her fingers.
Why was the commander so angry? Was she bothering him?
Her mind was tortured by all sorts of thoughts until she finally couldn’t bear it anymore. Gathering her courage, she spoke up, “Commander…”
A long moment passed before Xie Yuechen responded with a low grunt.
Su Ruo wanted to ask him to take her back to the airport. She wanted to return to City B right away. All her excitement and anticipation had been crushed. Now she just wanted to leave. But she didn’t dare say it—she was afraid he’d think she was being a spoiled, willful brat.
She was certain she must look terrible in his eyes now. And she didn’t have the nerve to make things worse.
Actually, Xie Yuechen didn’t want things to be like this either. He knew she was probably feeling awful right now. But thinking back to what had happened, he couldn’t suppress the fear and anger rising in him.
Those people were dangerous criminals who would do anything for money—merciless and ruthless. They weren’t the type to be fooled easily. That’s why the plan was kept so tightly under wraps. Everything had to be done in secret. If any information had leaked, it wouldn’t just be about whether the mission succeeded or failed—everyone involved would’ve been in danger.
Even they had to tread carefully. And yet Su Ruo had stumbled into it. Thankfully, they had reacted fast enough to avoid Dragon catching on. If he had noticed something was off, they wouldn’t have walked out of there unharmed. From the moment they arrived, Xie Yuechen had noticed that there were eyes on him everywhere. That Flame Sect wasn’t a simple organization.
Just thinking about how close they came to disaster made his blood run cold.
“Commander… how about I head back to City B now?” Su Ruo finally blurted out. She couldn’t take the tension anymore. Remembering how excited she’d been earlier made her heart ache.
Xie Yuechen knew he’d overreacted. He had originally wanted her to return early anyway. With the mission still ongoing, it was dangerous for her to be here. But now that she said it out loud, he suddenly didn’t want her to leave so soon.
She’d just gotten here, and now she was leaving again, looking all pitiful. Let her stay until tomorrow.
“Tomorrow,” he said.
As he spoke, the car rolled to a stop in front of his hotel.
Su Ruo was about to say something, but when she realized they’d reached a hotel, she fell silent, confused. Not daring to linger, she quickly followed him out of the car.
By now, most of Xie Yuechen’s anger had already faded, but he kept his expression composed. He led Su Ruo upstairs to the room that had been arranged for him.
Su Ruo watched him order food through the hotel’s internal line and felt even more conflicted. She had never seen him this angry before. Even though he hadn’t yelled, his silence alone had been terrifying.
Now that she had time to think it through, she was sure he hadn’t dressed up and gone drinking at that kind of club for fun. It wasn’t his style at all.
He must’ve been there for some reason. Given his profession, could it be… was he on some kind of secret mission, like in those spy dramas?
Her heart thudded. She couldn’t worry about his mood anymore. She asked directly, “Commander, are you on some kind of mission?”
Xie Yuechen, who had been wondering how to bring things up, raised an eyebrow at her question. The little woman was sharp and quick-witted.
“No,” he denied flatly. There was no way he would tell her the truth. “Why are you here? Why didn’t you tell me first?”
His question made Su Ruo feel even more guilty. She didn’t even have time to think about whether he was lying or not—she just wanted to get past this moment.
“I… I was afraid you wouldn’t let me come. Everyone at home knows. Yue Hui brought me.” Her voice was barely audible, and she didn’t dare meet his eyes, afraid to see any hint of annoyance.
What could Xie Yuechen say to that? He knew it wasn’t her fault. He didn’t blame her, just her reckless behavior. Coming all this way without a word and nearly putting herself in danger without realizing it.
Sometimes, a single careless mistake could mean risking lives. She didn’t understand that, but how could he not be upset?
“Do you know what you did wrong?” he finally asked, sighing helplessly.
“Yes. I shouldn’t have come without telling you. I shouldn’t have run straight over when I saw you. I almost ruined everything,” Su Ruo answered seriously, sensing that his tone had softened and feeling slightly relieved.
But the part she emphasized made Xie Yuechen’s head hurt even more. What he was upset about was her putting herself in danger without realizing it.
“Next time, observe the situation before acting. Don’t be reckless,” he said, unable to explain he had only been worried about her. “Always think things through carefully. Today was really dangerous. Learn from this.”
Su Ruo blinked, and her heart finally settled. She could tell—he wasn’t angry anymore.
Even if she were given a hundred more chances, she wouldn’t do something like this again. Seeing him upset had made her feel terrible. She was so scared he would hate her.
“So… you’re not angry anymore?” she asked carefully, eyes wide and staring at him. “You don’t find me annoying, right?”
Xie Yuechen couldn’t help laughing. How could he ever find her annoying? If he didn’t care about her, he wouldn’t have been this upset. Thinking back to her phone call earlier and how much anxiety he had caused her, his heart softened.
Forget it. Why stay mad? As long as she was okay.
“I won’t. I meant what I said. But what happened today must never happen again.” His tone had returned to its usual calm.
Su Ruo finally relaxed completely. She could tell he wasn’t angry anymore. Only heaven knew how awful and painful that silence had been for her.
Seeing how she had acted like she was facing a death sentence earlier, Xie Yuechen couldn’t help but mutter:
“I was just angry that you don’t know how to take care of yourself.”
He didn’t want her to misunderstand, didn’t want her to feel sad. After saying that, he hoped the little woman could finally feel at ease.
He didn’t expect that when he turned to look, Su Ruo’s cheeks were already wet with tears.
