Early that day, Xi Yuechen left the house. Before going out, he deliberately tidied himself up—dressed in a black business suit that made him look particularly sharp and spirited.
Xi Yuechen rarely wore business suits. All year round, he either wore military uniforms or the casual clothes prepared at home. For someone like him, there were few occasions requiring such attire.
Normally, someone wearing a business suit for the first time would seem a little stiff and unnatural. But not Xi Yuechen. He seemed born to wear clothes well. Whether in a military uniform, casual clothes, or now this business attire, he looked entirely natural. The suit tempered his usual imposing aura, replacing it with a refined and restrained demeanor—a complete image of a successful businessman.
After leaving home, he even went to get his hair done. His hair was already thick and coarse, and now it was slicked neatly back, giving him an even more gentlemanly appearance.
Once everything was in order, he drove the sedan he’d prepared in advance and headed toward Huangcheng—the largest entertainment complex in L City.
Xi Yuechen had gone to all this trouble for one purpose: to meet with “Brother Long.”
This Brother Long was somewhat well-known in L City. He was the one in charge of the lower-level gang members in Yanmen, the largest drug trafficking organization in Province D. Essentially, he was the boss of the lower ranks, and he liked to put on airs.
The higher-ups had sent Xi Yuechen here on a mission, of course, with a plan in place. Through connections, they’d already made contact with Brother Long. Today’s meeting was to introduce Xi Yuechen and pave the way for future “cooperation.”
When Xi Yuechen arrived at Huangcheng, Brother Long had yet to show up. Only the intermediary, A-Fei, was waiting for him. After sitting down, A-Fei stood and shook his hand. “Cheng Yue! Long time no see. Still the same as always, haha. Brother Long isn’t here yet, let’s sit and wait a bit.”
A-Fei was a young man, about twenty-five or twenty-six years old. He was a planted informant from the army within Yanmen. Though he’d been there a while, he hadn’t managed to climb into the upper ranks—hadn’t even seen many higher-ups in person.
Still, he wasn’t entirely unsuccessful. He’d built a reputation in the lower ranks and was particularly skilled at reading people and flattering others. That had won over Brother Long, allowing A-Fei to speak freely around him. He had arranged this meeting and made the introductions.
Xi Yuechen knew A-Fei’s background, so he didn’t say much—just grunted in acknowledgment and sat on the sofa, silently waiting for Brother Long.
This time, Xi Yuechen was posing as a mainland businessman named “Cheng Yue” who came to source goods. Since it was his first deal with Yanmen, he had to proceed cautiously and came in person to negotiate. A-Fei and “Cheng Yue” had attended the same high school, so A-Fei acted as a local connection and liaison.
Brother Long, fond of showing off, arrived fashionably late, keeping them waiting quite a while.
“This must be Boss Cheng, eh? A real success story—quite the impressive figure. Sorry about the wait—some matters with my men held me up,” Brother Long said.
He was a man in his thirties, slick-haired and flashy. Though his mouth apologized, his proud expression showed no hint of remorse.
“Oh, not at all. I’m the one intruding on your time. It’s a great honor that someone as busy as you could take time out of your schedule to meet me,” Xi Yuechen replied as he stood and reached out for a handshake, appearing genuinely flattered and humble.
“Haha! No wonder you’re a cultured man—you sure know how to talk!” Brother Long was delighted by the flattery and laughed heartily. “Come, sit down—no need to stand.”
Xi Yuechen waited for Brother Long to sit before he returned to his seat. Once seated, he picked up the wine bottle and poured a drink for Brother Long.
“Brother Long, I’m new here and unfamiliar with the rules. I’ve heard this line of work is quite lucrative, so I came running to join you. I’m deeply grateful that you agreed to meet me today. Let me toast you first.”
He downed a full glass in one go after speaking.
“Good! Brother Cheng, you’re bold—I like that!” Brother Long was clearly pleased, his arrogance replaced with admiration.
“You flatter me. I came here just hoping to ride your coattails and make some real money. With your reputation, I feel much more confident,” Xi Yuechen continued, expertly playing to Brother Long’s ego.
In just a short conversation, Xi Yuechen had fully grasped Brother Long’s personality. Every word he said was steeped in flattery.
In this moment, there was none of the usual indifference or coldness in Xi Yuechen’s demeanor. His modest smile was perfectly timed. Anyone familiar with him would be shocked—this didn’t seem like him at all.
To say Xi Yuechen was capable would be an understatement. He truly could adapt to anything with ease.
Brother Long, now basking in praise, readily agreed, “Well said, well said! They say it’s hard to find kindred spirits, but I’ve found one in you, Brother Cheng! Hahaha!”
“I’m truly honored and humbled. I’ll never forget your kindness in recognizing my worth,” Xi Yuechen replied with visible delight and gratitude. He poured himself another drink and downed it in one gulp.
Xi Yuechen’s actions had completely won over Brother Long. He was now looking at him more favorably. Selling goods? As long as someone was buying, what did it matter who? In a few days, he’d introduce Cheng Yue to the higher-ups.
“How much do you want this time, Brother Cheng? Give me a number so I can make arrangements.”
Hearing this, Xi Yuechen knew the meeting was a success. A faint, unreadable glint flickered in his eyes as he lifted his glass again.
But life is unpredictable—things rarely go exactly as planned.
That’s when the unexpected happened.
Su Ruo, eyes wide, kept confirming what she saw. At last, she was certain that the man sitting over there was Xi Yuechen. Without thinking, she began walking toward him.
After a few steps, she sensed something was off. Why was the commander dressed like this? She had never seen him like this before. Had he come here all dressed up… to have fun?
If she hadn’t been certain it was really Xi Yuechen, Su Ruo might not have dared to recognize him. He looked like a completely different person—not just his outfit, but that expression on his face?
She hadn’t even known Xi Yuechen could smile—and in such a humble and gracious way…
“Comman—”
“What are you doing here again?! Do you think this is a place you should be? What happened to staying home like I told you?”
Before Su Ruo could finish calling out, Xi Yuechen cut her off harshly. His usually calm face now bore a trace of irritation, stunning Su Ruo into silence.
“Brother Long, this is my wife, Lin Yin. She’s disobedient—sorry you had to see that.” Xi Yuechen quickly turned to explain to Brother Long with an apologetic smile, then turned back to Su Ruo. “Aren’t you going to greet Brother Long? We’ll deal with this at home!”
At that moment, Xi Yuechen looked both embarrassed and annoyed.
“Hello, Brother Long. Sorry for the disturbance,” Su Ruo quickly recovered and responded. “It’s this bastard’s fault—always yelling at me. I came in such a hurry, I didn’t realize you two were discussing business. I thought… he came here for fun.”
She looked slightly flustered and her cheeks turned a little red from embarrassment. Still, she shot a glare at Xi Yuechen—clearly still upset.
Brother Long finally relaxed, realizing this was just a jealous wife showing up unannounced. Women—always suspicious. But wow, this one’s really pretty.
“Haha, it’s nothing. Totally understandable. Brother Cheng, you sure are lucky—what a beauty you’ve got there!”
Brother Long laughed and teased, easing up completely. After all, his own wife often tried to catch him cheating too—driving him crazy. Apparently, it’s a universal issue with women.
“You flatter me, Brother Long. This woman gives me nothing but headaches,” Xi Yuechen said with an exasperated smile, shaking his head.
Su Ruo raised her brows, displeased. “What’s that supposed to mean? Regret marrying me? Look, Brother Long, see how he always scolds me, says I cause trouble. I was just worried about him! What did I do wrong?”
She sounded genuinely hurt and indignant, glaring at Xi Yuechen.
“Haha, don’t drag me into your domestic disputes. As they say, even a wise judge can’t settle family matters. But still, men doing big things are bound to socialize—women shouldn’t be so strict. My wife’s the same way, always checking up on me. Exhausting, I tell you.”
Clearly hitting a nerve, Brother Long began complaining, then sighed deeply.
“Oh come on, Brother Long, your wife can’t be compared to a country bumpkin like this,” Xi Yuechen said with a dismissive laugh, his tone carrying a hint of irritation. “You see? She even followed me here when I’m discussing business.”
Su Ruo shot a fierce glare at him, clearly preparing to settle the score later.
Brother Long laughed heartily. “Alright, alright, Brother Cheng, don’t take it too seriously. Just humor her. Otherwise, things only get worse—speaking from years of experience.”
That made Su Ruo giggle. She shot a sideways glance at Xi Yuechen and said sarcastically, “See? Brother Long knows what he’s doing. Unlike some people.”
Her tone was full of disdain and mockery.
Xi Yuechen sighed and stopped speaking. Turning to Brother Long, he said, “Really sorry you had to see this and for wasting your time. It won’t happen again.”
Now Su Ruo seemed to realize she’d messed up. Her expression turned regretful. Twisting her fingers nervously, she said, “Brother Long, did I mess up something important? I’m really sorry. I didn’t know he had actual business today. I’m so, so sorry.”
Brother Long raised an eyebrow. Cheng Yue looked refined and steady, so why did he find such a hot-tempered and rash woman?
“It’s fine, it’s fine. Not a big deal. Since your wife came all this way, let’s just call it for today. We’ll talk another time. Spend more time with your wife, Brother Cheng.”
As he spoke, Brother Long stood up, getting ready to leave.
“Brother Long, take care. Sorry again for holding you up,” Xi Yuechen said with a strained smile.
“It’s alright. Contact A-Fei tomorrow—we’ll talk again,” Brother Long replied casually.
Once he left, Su Ruo finally let out a long sigh of relief, feeling cold sweat soak her back.
Just now—what exactly had she walked into?
