Su Ruo couldn’t help but want to rub her forehead and sigh, and everyone else also had expressions of being torn between laughter and exasperation.
Suddenly, it felt like this whole thing was a farce, as if someone had staged a comedy just to mess with them.
“We actually took this so seriously. What a joke.”
After a moment of silence, Lu Yue finally summarized, and the people nearby nodded in agreement.
Damn it, he had even been filled with righteous fury thinking about how to retaliate, only for this kind of low-skill setup to unfold. Now he didn’t even feel like retaliating anymore—it was too embarrassing… Su Heng stared expressionlessly at the surveillance footage, clearly showing a few men sneaking around. Inside, his mind was a mess of chaotic thoughts.
“Who knows me this well? They could tell I was bored and decided to put on a comedy show just for me,” Su Ruo said, shaking her head in disbelief.
One could only imagine what kind of expression Director Liu—who had been so arrogant—would make upon seeing this footage. Would he still dare to shout about catching someone red-handed with ironclad evidence? For him to be so hell-bent on getting this case closed, it was probably just to cozy up to someone influential. Who would’ve thought that not only would he fail to climb up, but he’d also set himself on fire instead? Now, they were even too embarrassed to go show this footage to Director Liu.
“Sister, what do we do now?” Su Heng asked, tilting his head.
“Nothing special. First, let’s gather the others so they don’t hear it from someone else and worry unnecessarily. Also, investigate the guys who spiked the drinks—see if we can find out who’s behind them. We should be careful in case they try something else. It’s not good to have someone plotting in the shadows.”
Just as Su Ruo finished speaking, her phone rang in her bag. She took it out and saw it was Liang Bo’an. She chuckled lightly—she hadn’t been in contact with him much lately, so he must have heard about what happened with Mu You.
“Hello, Bo’an.”
Su Ruo didn’t notice the subtle changes in the expressions of the people around her when she called out Liang Bo’an’s name with a smile.
Hearing Liang Bo’an’s warm and gentle voice, Su Ruo had to admit, her mood lifted a little.
“It’s all fine now. Just got the person out from the police station—it was a setup, and we’ve got evidence now. Come by later. We’re all gathering, and we’ll talk about it together.”
“Mhm, as long as everything’s okay. I’ll be there soon. Do you need any help? I’ve got people and connections—it might come in handy.”
Hearing that she was safe, Liang Bo’an relaxed. Judging by her tone, nothing seemed too serious.
“Hmm… in that case, could you help me look into a few people? The ones who tampered with the drinks. I’m worried whoever’s behind them might try something else.” Su Ruo thought for a moment and said. Among them, Liang Bo’an had the broadest network and was efficient—leaving it to him was definitely convenient.
The others nearby were silently shocked. Since when did Su Ruo have such a close relationship with Liang Bo’an? Did she even realize his feelings for her… or not??
The most conflicted of all were He Wen and Su Heng. One knew that before losing her memory, her best friend had absolutely no interest in Liang Bo’an, and now, post-amnesia, hopefully there wouldn’t be some dog-blood twist. The other—Su Heng—well, one was his biological sister, and the other was the “brother-in-law” he had admired since childhood. Where did Liang Bo’an fit into all this? His sister belonged only to her proper brother-in-law!
Despite their tangled thoughts, neither voiced them then. These things had to be talked about under the right circumstances. Bringing it up now would be too abrupt. What if Su Ruo had no idea about Liang Bo’an’s feelings? Wouldn’t that just backfire?
In truth, Su Ruo had no clue about Liang Bo’an’s feelings. She’d always treated him as just a childhood friend. Besides, Liang Bo’an had never once hinted at it—he played it cool and breezy. How would she even guess?
Once that little interlude passed, everyone pretended like nothing had happened. They joked and chatted as they followed Su Ruo out of the surveillance room to a private room on the same floor where they often gathered.
Not long after, people started trickling in. By now, most had heard about what happened that morning, and they immediately asked what was going on and how things turned out.
At first, Su Ruo patiently explained to everyone until they were satisfied and relaxed. But after saying it several times, she got tired of repeating herself and simply said lazily, “Do I look like someone with problems?” That was enough to quiet the rest.
Everyone who heard the full story couldn’t help but laugh out loud. Honestly, none of them had ever encountered such a ridiculous conspiracy. It was like some child’s prank. In their circle, it was usually all calm conversations and polite smiles. But if things ever did get hostile, they went for the jugular with flawless precision.
When Xi Yuehui heard what happened, he immediately called Su Ruo. Upon being told she was at Mu You, he rushed over. If Su Ruo hadn’t warned him not to tell anyone, he would’ve called home the second he hung up.
“Hey, Sister-in-law, everything’s okay now?” Xi Yuehui asked as he stepped into the private room and saw everyone laughing and chatting like nothing had happened.
“No rush. Your ‘big brother’ is going to show you a good show soon,” Su Heng grinned mischievously from the sofa.
“Get lost! Still trying to be my big brother? Keep dreaming.” Xi Yuehui kicked him and squeezed onto the couch next to him, visibly relieved. But still…
“Didn’t they say it was a drug trafficking case? What the hell happened?”
Su Heng leaned forward and slung an arm around Xi Yuehui’s shoulders, chuckling, “If you want to know the juicy details, sit tight while your big bro tells you everything.”
Su Ruo shot a sideways glare at the two clowns but didn’t say anything. Instead, she turned and warmly greeted Liang Bo’an, who had just walked in, motioning for him to sit to her left where it was empty.
Liang Bo’an calmly ignored the brief moment of silence and the wave of curious looks that followed, and walked straight toward Su Ruo.
“You want me to check out those guys who messed with the drinks, right? Do you have the video?”
“Yeah, the surveillance caught all their movements. With that evidence, this case should be closed. But I’m sure someone’s behind them… Who could it be? I don’t remember offending anyone. I’m afraid they might try something else. We won’t always be this lucky,” Su Ruo said, sounding a bit troubled.
At her words, a flicker of cold ruthlessness flashed through Liang Bo’an’s peach blossom eyes. But a second later, it vanished behind a warm smile like spring breeze.
“No worries. Leave it to me—I’ll take care of everything. Those dirty tricks won’t be bothering you again.”
Su Ruo gave him a grateful smile. Even though his words sounded a bit harsh, the genuine concern behind them was clear. With his help, they’d probably be able to track down the mastermind.
“Sister-in-law, are you going to tell my brother about this? It doesn’t feel right to keep it from him,” Xi Yuehui asked, scooting closer.
Xi Yuechen? Su Ruo frowned. True, he’d be back in a few days. If they hid this from him and he found out later, that would definitely be bad.
“Yeah, he’s coming back soon. I’ll decide then based on how things go.”
“What? How come I didn’t know that?” Xi Yuehui was shocked.
“You didn’t know, huh? Well, we all knew.” Su Ruo smiled. Their mother-in-law and father-in-law clearly knew—how come no one told him? Not even Xi Yuechen himself. Tsk, tsk…
Sure enough, Xi Yuehui looked thoroughly dejected as he slumped back beside Su Heng. Su Heng chuckled, “Oh no, nobody loves you. Such a big deal and everyone kept it from you. Come here, bro will comfort you.”
Everyone else silently thought: Why does it feel like ever since Xi Yuechen got married, he’s been showing up at home more often? He used to be like a dragon—rarely seen. It must be an illusion…
Only Liang Bo’an’s face, under the lights, was hard to read. His peach blossom eyes were lowered, betraying no expression.
