When Zhou Yunzhen heard Su Ruo speak with such open disdain, her heart skipped a beat—but she quickly calmed herself down.
Su Ruo was talking about those two women. She was only contemptuous of them. What did that have to do with her?
Yet listening to Su Ruo casually utter those words still left Zhou Yunzhen with an unmistakable sense of unease.
No. Even if Su Ruo despised her, so what? She had long stopped being afraid. She had survived something as difficult as today—would she really care about Su Ruo’s mockery and sarcasm?
Besides, no matter how formidable Su Ruo’s methods were, could they be more ruthless than those two women from earlier? As long as she replaced Su Ruo, Su Ruo would become nothing.
No matter how powerful the Su family was, they couldn’t cover the sky with one hand, much less turn against both the Xi and Zhou families just for their daughter.
So there was nothing to fear about Su Ruo.
Zhou Yunzhen kept reassuring herself like this, but she still couldn’t suppress the lingering anxiety. Su Ruo looked as though she were smiling, yet somehow she felt utterly unfathomable.
“Ruoruo, what if one day you experienced what that woman just went through?” Zhou Yunzhen fell silent for a moment, then asked out of curiosity.
Su Ruo’s gaze, which had been resting outside the car window, paused briefly before she quickly recovered.
With a light chuckle, she asked, “You mean the Commander finding a mistress and divorcing me?”
Zhou Yunzhen nodded with some difficulty. “Mm. If one day that happened to you, what would you do?”
Su Ruo fell silent, as if deep in thought. For a moment, the car was filled with a suffocating heaviness.
Her lowered eyes were now brimming with sarcasm, tinged with darkness. What did Zhou Yunzhen mean by that?
Was she determined to stubbornly follow this path to the bitter end?
“If one day I ran into something like that,” Su Ruo finally said in a deep voice, her expression solemn and grave, “I certainly wouldn’t let it go.”
She let out a cold laugh. “If someone dared covet my marriage and try to steal my Commander from me, I definitely wouldn’t show mercy. If I were really pushed to the brink… who knows what even more ruthless things I might do?”
After saying that, she cast Zhou Yunzhen a half-smiling glance. She didn’t say anything else, but in those usually clear, bright eyes seemed to lurk countless emotions, dark light flowing within them. It made Zhou Yunzhen’s heart shudder.
Zhou Yunzhen hurriedly looked away and forced a smile, steadying herself before speaking. “Is that so? You don’t really seem like that.”
Indeed. Su Ruo had always presented herself as restrained and gentle. Her conduct was consistently low-key and modest. Even if she had depth, Zhou Yunzhen didn’t believe she could be ruthless. Yet what Su Ruo had just said carried an unmistakable edge.
Zhou Yunzhen felt flustered, but she struggled to regain her composure. Su Ruo was probably just talking—what was there to be afraid of? Even if she were unwilling to accept it and sought revenge later, Zhou Yunzhen wouldn’t be defenseless. She’d deal with whatever came.
“So as long as you don’t push me too far, I’m actually quite easy to get along with,” Su Ruo said with a smile, having taken in Zhou Yunzhen’s every expression without comment.
“Mm… yes,” Zhou Yunzhen replied perfunctorily.
“But,” Su Ruo suddenly changed the subject, “your hypothetical can’t possibly happen. My Commander is loyal in love and impeccable in character. Even if someone tried to seduce him, it would be useless. He’s very busy—he doesn’t have the leisure to spare an extra glance at irrelevant people.”
Leaning back in her seat, Su Ruo’s gaze drifted vaguely, as if focused on nothing at all. Paired with her unhurried voice was a faint smile at the corner of her lips—confident, even smug.
“Is that so? You’re that certain? Aren’t you afraid there might be an exception?” Zhou Yunzhen protested unwillingly.
Su Ruo wasn’t annoyed and continued smiling. “I’m not lacking even that much confidence.”
Zhou Yunzhen stopped speaking, lowered her eyes, and stared blankly at the injuries on her wrist, lost in thought.
The traffic ahead showed no sign of easing. Su Ruo sighed inwardly—this was truly self-inflicted suffering. Who knew how long they’d be stuck? If it got too late and Xi Zi got hungry, what then?
Thinking of her son made Su Ruo restless. Looking at the endless line of cars, irritation crept into her heart, and she sighed again.
“Oh right, Yunzhen—you told me before that you liked someone who already had someone else in his heart, didn’t you?”
Feeling displeased, Su Ruo naturally wanted Zhou Yunzhen to feel even worse, so she deliberately picked up this topic again.
Zhou Yunzhen’s dirty, disheveled face looked somewhat wooden. “Already has someone? Who knows? Some things aren’t what they appear to be on the surface, right?”
Su Ruo raised an eyebrow. This damned woman was really determined to remain delusional. If she’d known earlier, why had she bothered helping her out? She should’ve let her be taken to the police station and lose face completely—then see if she still had the nerve to seduce the Commander.
“So that means there is someone by his side? And you’re planning to… steal him away?”
Su Ruo’s tone was neutral, but Zhou Yunzhen could tell she was displeased.
“I’m not,” Zhou Yunzhen said urgently. “Ruoruo, you don’t understand. I truly love him. All my feelings in this lifetime exist for him. I want to be with him so badly I’m almost going mad. I’d do anything for him. If he were truly happy right now, I’d never disturb him or make him dislike me—but he isn’t happy with that woman. They’re apart more often than they’re together. That woman only cares about her own pleasure and has never done anything for him. What kind of feelings could that be? Maybe they’re together for some kind of benefit. I can tell they’re not suited for each other. I want to give him happiness. I want him to feel warmth, not be alone all the time… I can’t help it. I really love him. Since they’re not right for each other, why can’t I have a chance?”
As she spoke, Zhou Yunzhen even began to choke up. Her once-pretty face was now utterly bedraggled. Paired with this affected display, she looked not pitiful at all—only more unsightly. Watching her, waves of nausea rose in Su Ruo; that face looked grotesque and fake.
“Everything you said is just what you see. Who knows whether their relationship is good or not? Didn’t you say that some things aren’t what we see on the surface? Then what right do you have to draw such conclusions? And whether they’re suited or not—only the two of them know. No outsider has the standing to judge. For all you know, that man truly loves that woman.”
Su Ruo’s tone grew sharp and aggressive. Zhou Yunzhen’s words made her sick with anger—her heart practically smoking. What nonsense was that? Only cares about her own pleasure? Some kind of benefit? Why didn’t she just say Su Ruo and the Commander were in a political marriage? Damn it—some people really never change.
“You won’t know unless you try, right?” Zhou Yunzhen said hazily.
Su Ruo laughed in fury. “Fine. Then try.”
She really was a Mary Sue. She should’ve just quietly watched the spectacle instead of stepping in to help. And what did she get for it? Next time, just you wait. If I don’t add fuel to the fire, I won’t be called Su Ruo.
The scene returned to the moment when Zhou Yunzhen was suddenly attacked.
Seeing the explosive scene unfold, Su Ruo—still inside the café—instantly widened her eyes, utterly stunned. She watched in disbelief as Zhou Yunzhen was beaten and cursed by the two burly women, the three of them tearing at each other before being swallowed by the crowd that had gathered.
Swallowing stiffly, Su Ruo looked at the commotion across the street, sudden realization dawning on her—she clearly knew whose handiwork this was.
Once she figured it out, she didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. She had wanted to give Zhou Yunzhen a “surprise,” but hadn’t expected it to be all shock and no delight. Where on earth had those two outrageous women been found?
That acting—and those moves—they could rival Hollywood stars.
Su Ruo watched for a while longer. Though she could only see the outer ring of the crowd, based on the fiery scene she’d glimpsed earlier, she could easily imagine how intense it must be at the center.
After staring at heads bobbing about for a bit, Su Ruo grew bored. She’d been out for quite some time—had Xi Zi woken up yet? What if he was hungry?
Losing interest in the spectacle, she decided that was enough. Dragging it out would be pointless. Seeing Zhou Yunzhen in such a sorry state was already quite satisfying. If those two ferocious women kept going and Zhou Yunzhen really got hurt, things would become hard to clean up.
After all, it was meant to be a joke—best to end it lightly.
Who would’ve thought that just as Su Ruo reached the door, wondering how to wrap things up, she’d spot police officers running over from the distance.
The moment she saw the police, Su Ruo didn’t hesitate—she got straight into her car and drove off.
She wasn’t stupid. If the police got involved, this wouldn’t stay lighthearted. If they dug up anything, it would be a real headache. If both families found out, the nature of the matter would be hard to define.
So she couldn’t let the police take Zhou Yunzhen to the station. After being beaten like that, what if she insisted on pursuing the case?
Better take her away first.
But now, Su Ruo regretted that decision. She really should’ve let this woman go to the police station and lose face. Judging from her reaction earlier, she clearly cared a great deal about her image—even swallowing such humiliation quietly.
She shouldn’t have indulged her. Even if the police wanted to investigate, Su Ruo had ways to stop it.
Forget it. What was the point of thinking about it now?
Su Ruo was still angry, but since things had already come to this, she resolved that next time she wouldn’t let Zhou Yunzhen off so easily.
Judging by Zhou Yunzhen’s current state, the next “lesson” wouldn’t be far off.
A dark glint flashed in Su Ruo’s eyes as she tightened her grip on the steering wheel. Truly—an incorrigible vixen.
At last, the traffic ahead began to clear, and Su Ruo could finally move the car.
But she hadn’t gone far when her phone rang. Without checking the caller ID, she turned on the Bluetooth headset.
“Hello.”
Whatever the other party said caused Su Ruo’s expression to change instantly. She asked urgently, “What? Wait for me—I’ll be there right away!”
Hearing Su Ruo’s voice, Zhou Yunzhen couldn’t help glancing over, curiosity rising. What had happened to make her so flustered?
“Yunzhen, my mother-in-law just called and said Xi Zi doesn’t seem well. I need to rush home. I can’t take you anymore. I remember there’s a hotel around here—you go on your own. I’m really sorry.”
Su Ruo pulled over at once and spoke quickly, her face full of panic.
Zhou Yunzhen froze, as if she couldn’t process it. She understood what Su Ruo meant—and precisely because she understood, she was shocked.
In her current state… how was she supposed to get out and find a hotel by herself?
But Su Ruo was clearly frantic. Seeing Zhou Yunzhen still unmoving, she urged, “What’s wrong?”
“It’s nothing… so I get out?” Zhou Yunzhen asked in disbelief.
“Yes. I have to hurry back. I could hear Xi Zi crying even through the phone—I’m terribly worried.”
Zhou Yunzhen understood Su Ruo’s feelings, but how was she supposed to get out like this? Yet she had no choice. With Su Ruo in this state, there was no way she’d take her to a hotel.
Seeing Su Ruo all but pushing her out, Zhou Yunzhen didn’t hesitate any longer. She opened the car door and stepped out.
The moment she shut the door—before she could even steady herself—Su Ruo’s car sped away in a cloud of dust.
“**!” Zhou Yunzhen cursed under her breath.
