RMM -Chapter 259 Addicted to Acting

Su Ruo hummed in response and said nothing more, focusing on driving. Only then did Zhou Yunzhen quietly let out a breath of relief. This was something she never wanted to hear anyone mention again.

It was already over!

Yet how could Zhou Yunzhen possibly get past it? Her slender hands were clenched tightly together; if she hadn’t been in the habit of trimming her nails, her palms would probably have been torn open by now.

For someone as proud and arrogant as Zhou Yunzhen, this was nothing short of a crushing humiliation—being beaten in public and branded a “fox spirit.” How could she accept that?

She had no idea where those two women had come from. How could they mistake someone so badly? They hadn’t listened to a word of her explanation, spouting nonsense as they beat and kicked her.

But what could she do now, no matter how furious she was? Those two women had already fled. In a sea of people, where could she possibly find them? If she really wanted to track them down, she’d have to go to the police station or request traffic surveillance footage—but that would expose her as well, and the whole incident would become public knowledge.

So she could only swallow this loss in silence.

The moment Zhou Yunzhen thought of it, she trembled with rage, cursing those two women thousands of times over in her heart, her expression dark and vicious.

At this point, she didn’t doubt their background at all. She assumed they had come to ambush a mistress, mistaken her for the wrong person, and she’d simply been unlucky enough to get caught in the crossfire. No matter how angry she was, there was truly nothing she could do.

What Zhou Yunzhen didn’t know, in the midst of her fury, was that a few days later, someone would seek out those two women and pay them handsomely. Overjoyed, they would bow and scrape nonstop, flattering their benefactor and promising that if there were ever such a “performance” again, they’d be happy to be called back—and would do an even better job.

Of course, that was a story for later.

Just as Zhou Yunzhen was secretly beginning to calm down, she heard Su Ruo speak.

“Yunzhen… just now… was that the person you told me about before?”

Zhou Yunzhen froze instantly, her face darkening again.

She knew exactly who Su Ruo meant—the madwoman’s husband. But how could that be possible? Ridiculous!

“No! I don’t know him!”

Zhou Yunzhen truly lost control. After taking so many blows in succession, being prodded like this by Su Ruo—it would be strange if she could stay calm.

Who was he? She didn’t know him at all!

“Alright, alright, I get it, I get it. Calm down.”

Seeing Zhou Yunzhen on the verge of collapse, Su Ruo hurriedly spoke, her face full of concern. Yet her tone sounded unmistakably like she was soothing someone in denial.

As if Zhou Yunzhen were deceiving herself—and Su Ruo was simply going along with it to pacify her.

How could Zhou Yunzhen not hear that? She couldn’t help shouting, “I already told you! They got the wrong person! I don’t know her husband at all!”

Hearing Zhou Yunzhen’s hysterical tone, a flash of darkness—thick with mockery—flickered through Su Ruo’s eyes.

“Got the wrong person?” Su Ruo echoed in surprise, sounding incredulous. Indeed, anyone who saw this wouldn’t think it was a case of mistaken identity. Two grown women—how could they fail to recognize someone? Especially when catching a mistress—wouldn’t they make sure they had the right person before charging in so viciously?

“Yes! How many times do I have to say it? I’m not her! They got the wrong person!” Zhou Yunzhen screamed.

Su Ruo didn’t look annoyed at all after being yelled at. She seemed completely understanding of Zhou Yunzhen’s mood, her expression still full of concern.

“But how could those two women do that? Beating someone for no reason at all—who takes responsibility if something goes wrong? And they even ran away in the end! Disgusting!”

She spoke with righteous indignation, as if furious to the extreme. After letting out a long breath, she continued, “You have no idea—I was terrified at the time. By the time I reacted, you were already tangled up with them. I wanted to push my way over to help, but there were too many people, and I couldn’t get through. Those two women were just too fierce. I had no choice but to run back to the car and pull you out. Otherwise, no matter where we ran, they would’ve caught up to us. I just didn’t expect the police to show up.”

What Su Ruo said made sense. Given how ferocious those two women were, even Zhou Yunzhen could only take the beating—let alone Su Ruo. Under the circumstances, Su Ruo’s approach really was the best option.

Judging by how those two women were fighting like their lives depended on it, they were clearly ready to go all the way. Even if Su Ruo had managed to pull them apart, it wouldn’t have helped. But with a car, it was different—at least they couldn’t chase it down.

Yet Zhou Yunzhen was in no mood to listen. She gave a couple of perfunctory “mm-hmms” and fell silent.

Su Ruo glanced at her. Zhou Yunzhen’s face was dark and ugly, her body still trembling slightly. Anyone could tell she was shaking with rage—but that wasn’t the main point. Her clothes were torn and disheveled, her entire body smeared with dried egg yolk and white, bits of eggshell still stuck to her. Her hair was a complete mess, clumped together in sticky strands where the eggs had hit. Apart from her face, every exposed patch of skin was covered in bloody scratches. It was a miserable sight.

Su Ruo didn’t dare look too closely, afraid that if she did, she wouldn’t be able to stop herself from laughing out loud. She held back with all her might—her face flushed, her stomach faintly aching from the effort.

At first she hadn’t noticed it, but after being stuck in the car for a while, the stench of eggs on Zhou Yunzhen grew stronger and stronger.

Su Ruo felt a little nauseated, but she couldn’t open the window to air it out. She had no choice but to endure it—she didn’t want to catch a chill from the wind.

Looks like I won’t be able to eat eggs for a while, Su Ruo thought, frowning as she suppressed her nausea.

Then again, not eating them was fine. Compared to swallowing them, today’s “use” of eggs had been far more important—and far more entertaining. She’d even be willing to give them up for life.

Only then did Su Ruo manage to press down the bubbling laughter in her chest. She didn’t dare look at Zhou Yunzhen again—otherwise she couldn’t guarantee she’d be able to hold it in a second time.

Zhou Yunzhen had no attention to spare for Su Ruo’s expression anyway. The raging fire in her heart was practically burning her alive.

“Those two women were terrifying. I’ve never seen such horrible women in my life. Those ridiculous soap-opera plots actually fell on our heads! No, I can’t just swallow this! I can’t let them bully me for nothing. Yunzhen, we have to teach them a lesson!”

Su Ruo was completely addicted to acting now. The more she pretended, the more convincing she became—she even looked genuinely furious, as if she were standing up for justice.

But Zhou Yunzhen had already made up her mind. How could she possibly agree? She instinctively shook her head.

“Forget it. Just treat it like getting bitten by a dog.”

She said it as if she didn’t care, but the teeth-gritting tone made it abundantly clear how much resentment she was holding inside.

Anyone in her position would be furious—it was understandable. Su Ruo understood perfectly. But understanding didn’t mean staying silent.

“Why? If you have a clear conscience, why endure this? You’re not the one in the wrong. Let’s treat your wounds first, then go check the surveillance footage. We’ll definitely drag those two women out and get you justice.”

Su Ruo said angrily as she drove.

“No need. They really did get the wrong person. In a sea of people, where would we even find them? Forget it. Better to have less trouble than more. Who knows what kind of mess it would turn into if we investigated further. I’ll just be more careful in the future.”

Suppressing her rage, Zhou Yunzhen had no choice but to let the matter drop.

“RuoRuo… can you help me keep this a secret?”

Su Ruo nodded. “I know. This kind of thing shouldn’t be publicized.”

Enduring the pain in her neck and wrist, Zhou Yunzhen took two tissues and gently wiped at her wounds. There was no alcohol to disinfect them—this was the best she could do, if only to calm her anxious heart.

Every time the burning wounds were touched, the pain stabbed straight to the bone. Zhou Yunzhen’s brows never once relaxed, yet she was tough—so many wounds, and she didn’t make a sound.

Looking at the increasingly severe traffic jam ahead, Su Ruo sighed helplessly. “It’s jammed again. What should we do? Can you hold on?”

Zhou Yunzhen looked up and saw that at some point, the cars ahead had lined up into a long, unmoving snake.

She cursed under her breath, her irritability spiking. How long was this going to take? What about her wounds?

No woman was indifferent to her appearance. No matter how composed Zhou Yunzhen usually was, the thought that her face might be scarred sent a shiver through her. She was so anxious she felt on the verge of losing her mind.

“Then what do we do?” Zhou Yunzhen panicked. The pain in her wounds seemed to intensify, and she completely lost the calm rationality she normally had as a doctor. If she weren’t in such a miserable state, she would have jumped out and run.

“Let’s wait a bit longer. Hopefully it won’t take too long,” Su Ruo comforted her softly.

But in her panic, Zhou Yunzhen didn’t notice that while Su Ruo was soothing her, her eyes were deep and calculating.

There had been a fork in the road earlier—and this was the path Su Ruo had deliberately chosen. She’d driven this way several times and already knew that this stretch was always congested at this hour.

Zhou Yunzhen was flustered; Su Ruo was not. She knew that even if Zhou Yunzhen’s wounds left scars, they would only be temporary and would fade with time. And if not—modern medicine was advanced enough to deal with scars like these.

She was just venting her anger, trying to scare her a little. If it could serve as a warning and make Zhou Yunzhen stop coveting her family’s chief, that would be best.

Su Ruo’s intentions were simple: teach Zhou Yunzhen a lesson and remind her not to desire what didn’t belong to her. Otherwise, the consequences would only grow more serious—today’s incident wouldn’t have ended so easily otherwise.

Su Ruo wasn’t exactly kindhearted, but she wasn’t cruel either. As long as she wasn’t pushed to the brink, she would never do anything utterly merciless.

So how things turned out from here would depend entirely on Zhou Yunzhen herself.

“Still, those two women looked strong and sturdy—who would’ve thought their eyesight was so useless? How could they mistake someone so badly? And they were so vicious. If you didn’t know better, you might really think you were… well, that sort of person.”

Su Ruo complained casually. But the words that were supposedly in Zhou Yunzhen’s defense sounded oddly grating to her ears, as if there were hidden barbs in them. Before she could think it through, Su Ruo laughed lightly.

“Ridiculous. I said it, didn’t I? How could you possibly seduce someone else’s husband? With your conditions, no matter what, you wouldn’t fall so low as to do something like that. How immoral would that be? Truly laughable.”

Zhou Yunzhen’s heart sank. She could hear the disdain in Su Ruo’s voice.
