As soon as Zhou Yunzhen got out of the car, she naturally seized everyone’s attention.
Where did this woman come from? What kind of catastrophe had she gone through to end up like this?
The passersby watched and speculated silently.
Being subjected to such scrutiny left Zhou Yunzhen feeling both mortified and furious. Gritting her teeth, she couldn’t help but curse those two women again.
You’d better hope I never see you again. Otherwise, today’s humiliation—I, Zhou Yunzhen, will make sure to repay it in full!
Unable to bear the strange looks and whispered gossip, Zhou Yunzhen lowered her head and quickened her pace.
Yet wherever she went in this state, she still became the center of attention, which only made her complain inwardly about Su Ruo.
Isn’t your son being watched by your mother-in-law? What could possibly happen in such a short time? You couldn’t even spare the time to take me to a hotel? Being this cautious—what’s the point? It’s just a child. How spineless!
The more Zhou Yunzhen thought about it, the heavier the resentment in her heart grew. She hated fiercely—whether it was those two women who had reduced her to this state, or Su Ruo, who had forced her to endure such embarrassment, even she wasn’t sure.
In her anger, she clenched the object in her hand—then suddenly paused.
What am I holding?
Her gaze immediately dropped to her hand.
It was her purse.
She hadn’t expected that after such chaos, the purse would still be in her grasp. The scene had been utter turmoil, and she had completely forgotten about it. Thankfully, those two women hadn’t targeted her purse, so it never left her hand. To survive such mayhem was nothing short of a miracle.
Miracle or not, the moment Zhou Yunzhen saw the purse, she couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief.
Only then did she remember—if she wanted to stay at a hotel, how could she do it without money or ID?
Luckily, the purse was still with her. Otherwise, she didn’t even know what she would do. Going home was absolutely out of the question. In her current state, if anyone in the compound saw her, the news would spread instantly. How would she live that down? And her father—she couldn’t even imagine how he would react, given his explosive temper, if he saw her like this.
Right now, the last thing she wanted was for this incident to be publicized.
She hadn’t walked far before spotting a small hotel. It wasn’t a star-rated one, and it didn’t look particularly nice, but to Zhou Yunzhen at this moment, it was like a lifesaver in the snow. How could she possibly be picky about cleanliness or facilities?
Without a second thought, she stepped inside.
The front-desk receptionist immediately put on a smile to welcome the guest, but the moment she saw who it was, her smile froze. Then, as if flipping a switch, it turned into an expression of disdain and disgust.
“May I ask what you need? If you’re looking to use the restroom, I’m sorry—ours is broken and under repair.”
She tossed out those stiff words, then sat back down and lowered her head, resuming her work.
Hearing that, along with the dismissive attitude, Zhou Yunzhen’s already crackling anger flared up even more. She felt as though all the bad luck of her entire life had been used up today—one misfortune after another, not a single thing going right.
“Open a room.”
The receptionist was cold; Zhou Yunzhen’s tone was even colder. She slammed her ID card and credit card onto the counter and spoke angrily.
The receptionist jumped in surprise. After understanding what Zhou Yunzhen meant, she slowly stood up and picked up the ID to examine it.
Having an ID wasn’t enough—it had to be verified as belonging to the person. The receptionist looked at the ID, then at Zhou Yunzhen, with extreme suspicion.
She couldn’t be blamed for being cautious—it really was suspicious. The woman in the photo had well-defined features and a gentle smile, looking beautiful and elegant. But the woman in front of her?
Disheveled clothes, filthy hair, covered in wounds—those were the phrases that came to the receptionist’s mind. Oh, and one more: reeking.
How were these two alike at all? They looked like completely different people.
“Is this ID really yours?”
Just when Zhou Yunzhen thought she was finally going to get a room, the other party casually threw out this question.
If she weren’t forcing herself to hold back, Zhou Yunzhen would really have wanted to hit someone right then. Her hands clenched into fists as she replied coldly, “Yes. Are you going to open the room for me now?”
That imperious tone made the receptionist deeply displeased.
What nerve—look at the state you’re in, and you still think you’re some princess or queen? Ridiculous.
Anyone can tell she’s been beaten like this. If she’s beaten into such a mess, she must be no good. And she still dares to be fierce with me?
“Sorry, no. Things are being checked strictly right now. We have to verify that the ID matches the person.”
The receptionist refused coldly and pushed the ID back across the counter, making it clear she didn’t believe Zhou Yunzhen.
Zhou Yunzhen felt like her heart was about to explode with anger. In such a short time, she had gone through so much, and she was truly exhausted—where did she have the energy to argue?
So after taking a deep breath, she tried to stay calm. “That is my ID. I just had an accident today.”
Although she tried to appear gentle and polite, the lingering aura of rage around her was impossible to suppress. To the receptionist, this bedraggled woman who still carried herself with an air of superiority was unbearable to look at.
“But you really don’t look like her. How about you come a bit closer, wipe the dirt off your face, and tidy your hair a little? Then I’ll take another good look.”
Seeing Zhou Yunzhen on the verge of exploding, the receptionist added, “Don’t get angry. These are the rules. If I want to work, I have to follow them, right? You said you’re the person in the ID—what’s there to be afraid of? You’re such a mess right now, I really can’t see your face clearly.”
Hearing those almost taunting words, Zhou Yunzhen’s hands clenched so tightly they cracked, her face darkening to the extreme.
What is going on today? Why is everyone deliberately making things difficult for me?!
She was furious, yet she had no choice but to endure it. If she left this hotel, who knew whether there would be another nearby? She didn’t want to go back outside looking like this and become a laughingstock again.
Besides, today’s string of blows had left her physically and mentally drained. She truly had no energy left to search for another place to stay.
So she had to endure it—endure the receptionist’s inexplicable hostility and deliberate harassment.
Swallowing the enormous humiliation in her heart, Zhou Yunzhen brushed her hair back and roughly wiped her face, then leaned closer so the receptionist could inspect her. Her hands trembled uncontrollably with anger.
Seeing that Zhou Yunzhen, though furious, still had to follow her instructions, the receptionist felt satisfied. She didn’t bother to look closely at Zhou Yunzhen’s face anymore—she could already smell the stench from this far away. If she got any closer, wouldn’t she suffocate?
“Alright, alright. How many days will you be staying?”
Watching the woman across from her treat her like a beggar being dismissed, Zhou Yunzhen was so angry she felt numb. How could she not see that the woman was deliberately humiliating her?
But what could she do? She could only endure it.
“Tsk. Looks so destitute, yet pretty rich. Hmph, who knows what she does for a living.”
Zhou Yunzhen had only taken a few steps away when she heard the woman muttering behind her. Calling it muttering was a joke—it was clearly meant for her to hear. The contemptuous tone and deliberately loud volume—who would believe it was accidental?
Zhou Yunzhen didn’t turn back. She continued forward in long strides, her eyes burning with an anger that seemed capable of incinerating everything.
What happened at the hotel could truly be called adding insult to injury for Zhou Yunzhen. The moment she stepped into her room, her emotions finally collapsed.
But after enduring so much, how could Zhou Yunzhen truly let it go?
One day, I will wash away all of today’s humiliation with supreme glory and honor!
