“Then forget it,” Wu Yuan said regretfully. If only there were another peach like that, maybe life would be completely different.
Zhang Jiaohua smiled, “The effects of that peach are far from just that. Don’t slack off on your stake training (Zhuang Gong), otherwise even if you have peaches like this, your body won’t be able to handle it.”
Wu Yuan could hear there was a deeper meaning behind Zhang Jiaohua’s words. “So you’re saying… there might be more peaches like that in the future?”
Zhang Jiaohua just smiled without giving the answer Wu Yuan hoped for.
The next day at noon, the homeroom teacher, Wei Yunlong, came to find Zhang Jiaohua. “Zhang Jiaohua, someone’s here to see you.”
Zhang Jiaohua followed him and found it was Chen Cheng.
The moment Chen Cheng saw Zhang Jiaohua, she complained, “You said you’d come see me, but you’ve been gone for so long without a word. I had no choice but to come find you myself.”
Zhang Jiaohua scratched his head. “Actually, even if you hadn’t come, I would’ve gone to find you soon.”
“Hmph, I don’t believe it. Come on, big sis is treating you today. I already asked your homeroom teacher for leave.” Chen Cheng grabbed Zhang Jiaohua and pulled him outside. A black sedan was parked outside. As they approached, Chen Cheng’s assistant opened the door for her. She pulled Zhang Jiaohua into the car.
“Has your movie started filming yet?” Zhang Jiaohua asked.
“It’s already started, but the haunted house scenes haven’t begun yet. The crew has been setting up the haunted house for a few days now. It should be ready soon. After hearing what you said last time, I told Director Lin about it. While he didn’t agree to completely change the main scenes, he did move some non-essential scenes elsewhere. But some scenes still have to be filmed inside the haunted house,” Chen Cheng said.
Zhang Jiaohua nodded. “A classmate of mine joined a paranormal interest club. A few days ago, they sneaked into the haunted house at night for an activity and found some weird and creepy stuff. I suspect someone is targeting your film crew deliberately. If you have to shoot inside the haunted house, you must be extremely careful. Try not to stay overnight.”
Chen Cheng nodded. “I know, but many scenes have to be shot at night. There’s no way around that.”
Zhang Jiaohua nodded again. “I’ll give you a few protective talismans. Be careful. If anything feels wrong, just leave immediately, no matter what.”
Chen Cheng completely trusted Zhang Jiaohua and nodded. She then pleaded, “Jiaohua, can you also give some talismans to Stinky Cat, Brother Ming, and Sister Tang Yan?”
Zhang Jiaohua was very generous with the talismans. “I’ll give you a few more. I don’t care about others, but you must always carry a talisman on you.”
Chen Cheng quickly promised, “Don’t worry. I’ll keep several on me at all times.”
Zhang Jiaohua had already prepared them and pulled out a stack of talismans from his backpack to hand over.
“Thank you, thank you so much,” Chen Cheng said gratefully.
Others might not believe in ghosts and spirits, but after her experience in Meizi’ao, Chen Cheng’s whole worldview had changed.
“Oh, by the way, Jiaohua, Tang Yan and the others found out I came today. They want to come join the fun too. What do you think? If you don’t want them to come, I’ll send them away,” Chen Cheng added.
“Let them come. Don’t make us people from Meizi’ao look petty,” Zhang Jiaohua said indifferently.
Chen Cheng giggled, “Then I’ll call them over. Looks like I can save money on today’s meal!”
“You’re a big star and you’re still fussing over saving a meal?” Zhang Jiaohua asked, confused.
“Jiaohua, you’re still young—you don’t understand women. No matter how rich a woman is, her love for getting a good deal never changes,” Chen Cheng said, pretending to look greedy for money.
Zhang Jiaohua scratched his head again, completely confused.
“You’re so handsome. I bet there are a lot of girls in your class who like you?” Chen Cheng asked teasingly.
“N-no… no.”
Zhang Jiaohua hesitated a bit, which Chen Cheng immediately caught. “Hehe, so there are some! People from Meizi’ao really are great.
My mom said that back in the day, a lot of successful young city boys pursued her, but she wasn’t tempted at all. She fell for my dad back in Meizi’ao instead.
At first, I thought it was because she was young and easily tricked, but after living with my dad for so long, I realized he really is quite charming.”
Zhang Jiaohua said, “The elders in the village told me that your dad won your mom over by delivering a cotton quilt. Winters in Meizi’ao are freezing, and your mom’s group of educated youths arrived in the summer without proper bedding. Chen Dianzi seized the opportunity to deliver a quilt to her.
Your mom was alone at the time, and, well… one thing led to another. The next year, a baby was born.”
“What does a little kid like you know? That’s just village gossip!” Chen Cheng said indignantly.
The assistant and the driver in the front seat couldn’t hold back their laughter. The assistant even had to cover her mouth and kept trembling with suppressed laughter.
Chen Cheng glared at Zhang Jiaohua. “Brat! You dare say anything! Don’t you dare spread this around, or I’ll be furious with you.”
“I’m not making it up! That’s what everyone says in the village!” Zhang Jiaohua pouted.
“Don’t tell anyone—or I’ll go back and tell your mom!” Chen Cheng warned anxiously.
Luckily, they were inside the car. If they had been at the hotel and Tang Yan heard it, it would have caused real trouble.
“And you two! If you want to laugh, just laugh! Don’t hurt yourselves trying to hold it in. But you’d better keep your mouths shut! If this gets out and causes a scandal, I’ll make you two pay.”
“Don’t worry, Chen Cheng. We’re not that stupid,” the assistant said quickly.
When they got out of the car, Tang Yan and the others were already waiting at the hotel entrance.
As soon as Zhang Jiaohua stepped out of the car, Tang Yan rushed over, hugged him warmly, and said, “Jiaohua! Long time no see—I missed you so much!”
Her overenthusiastic hug made Zhang Jiaohua blush bright red, and he quickly wriggled out of her overwhelming embrace.
Chen Haibo joked, “Jiaohua, you better be careful. Tang Yan never hugs boys like that. Looks like she’s trying to rob the cradle!”
“Stinky Cat, stop talking nonsense! I treat Jiaohua like my own little brother! If I were ten years younger like Chen Cheng, I’d definitely wait another ten years just to not let some other girl snatch him away,” Tang Yan said openly, not hiding her affection for Zhang Jiaohua at all.
“Hey, hey, you guys better not get any funny ideas about Jiaohua. He’s still underage!” Chen Cheng said disapprovingly.
“Giggle, giggle, giggle,” Tang Yan laughed dramatically.
