PCJ – Chapter 189 The Spirit of a King

This scene stunned everyone. They never expected that the one to suffer would be Feilong.

Feilong was a German Shepherd, and although not fully grown, its body was already very robust, weighing at least 150 pounds. In contrast, Zuan Shanbao weighed less than 50 pounds. With such a large disparity, who would have thought that Zuan Shanbao’s strength would be no less than Feilong’s, and in fact, much greater? If the two were of the same weight, what would Feilong’s outcome be?

Zhu Kaixun, who was about to call Feilong back, stood with his mouth wide open, unable to utter a sound, as this was something he hadn’t anticipated at all.

“Won! Won! Haha, Jiaohua, Shanbao won. Old Zhu, your dog looks big but turns out to be all show and no go. It’s useless!” Luo Changjun didn’t hide his joy at all. It was almost like he came to pick a fight, making the police dog base officers quite unhappy. If he weren’t Captain Zhu’s friend, they would have charged at Luo Changjun and fought him.

They were frustrated. Obviously, this was just a local dog, yet it had come and knocked down the pride of the police dog squad.

Feilong flew high and then landed with a thud. Despite its vicious nature, it quickly got up and prepared to rush at Zuan Shanbao again. However, its front leg was now limping; the collision with Zuan Shanbao had injured Feilong’s leg.

Zuan Shanbao repeated its previous move, sending Feilong flying again. This time, Zhu Kaixun saw Zuan Shanbao’s action clearly; it was using leverage, following the direction of Feilong’s charge and applying force at Feilong’s front leg, effectively using Feilong’s own strength against it. Most of the force came from Feilong itself, essentially making Feilong knock itself out. Compared to Zuan Shanbao, Feilong lacked agility and intelligence. It only knew brute force and was completely outwitted by Zuan Shanbao. Although Feilong was known as the smartest breed, it was like a baby learning to walk in front of the highly intelligent Zuan Shanbao.

This time, both of Feilong’s legs were injured. Although it didn’t want to fall before its enemy, its front legs couldn’t support it to stand up again.

Zhu Kaixun hurried over, worriedly checking Feilong’s injuries.

Zuan Shanbao stood triumphantly in front of Feilong.

The police dog squad base fell silent. All the police dogs quieted down. Their strongest, Feilong, had been openly defeated by Zuan Shanbao, so what else could they do?

Zuan Shanbao suddenly moved towards a nearby police dog training ground where a tall wooden structure stood. It charged up the high platform and howled at the sky! The majestic aura made Zuan Shanbao look not like an ordinary dog but like a king among dogs. This display of dominance caused all the police dogs to bow down, submitting to Zuan Shanbao’s authority.

Even Feilong, who had been struggling to get up and continue fighting, fell silent at that moment.

“King’s aura!” Zhu Kaixun sighed. As an experienced dog trainer, he had heard of the legend of the dog king but had never seen it. Today, he seemed to have felt it—a display of dominance that made all dogs submit.

“Zuan Shanbao, come down!” Zhang Jiaohua was afraid Zuan Shanbao might fall and get hurt, so he shouted loudly.

Upon hearing its young master’s call, Zuan Shanbao’s imposing aura vanished, and it quickly turned back into an obedient dog, wagging its tail and coming down the platform swiftly. It ran to Zhang Jiaohua’s side, rubbing against his leg, seemingly asking for forgiveness.

“Look at you, show-off.” Zhang Jiaohua playfully rubbed Zuan Shanbao’s head.

“You’re wasting this dog by keeping it. It’s a king among dogs, and you treat it like a pet. It’s a waste of talent.” Zhu Kaixun couldn’t help but say.

Zhang Jiaohua didn’t understand what “wasting talent” meant, but he could tell from Zhu Kaixun’s tone that it wasn’t a compliment. He huffed, “It’s my dog, and I’ll raise it how I want. Only I can raise such a Ganshan dog. If I want to treat it like a king, I will; if I want to treat it like a pet, I will. It’s none of your business.”

Luo Changjun couldn’t help but laugh at Zhu Kaixun’s frustrated expression, “Old Zhu, I must say, in terms of raising dogs, you’re no match for Jiaohua. Actually, I know that in the countryside, Jiaohua’s dog would just be a regular watchdog. His grandfather’s dog had three puppies, and the same breed, in his hands, became what you call a dog king, while in others’ hands, they remained watchdogs. If you had these dogs, they probably wouldn’t be any better.”

“Not just no better, they would be terrible.” Zhu Kaixun said with frustration.

“What do you mean?” Luo Changjun sensed there was more to the story.

Zhu Kaixun shook his head, “I’ve heard of Ganshan dogs. I heard some hunters had Ganshan dogs that could rival wolves. So I went to great lengths to collect a batch of Ganshan dog pups from the hunters around Meishan. I brought them to the police dog squad base to train. I thought with more scientific training methods, I could train outstanding police dogs. But I was wrong. Now, with the base’s budget cuts, this batch of Ganshan dogs is facing elimination. I wanted to focus on the newly born pups, but now it seems I have no chance. I can’t raise such powerful Ganshan dogs.”

Zhu Kaixun was dejected. Luo Changjun didn’t care about his low spirits. He heard a crucial piece of information related to their purpose: “You said you have a batch of Ganshan dog pups and they’re facing elimination?”

“Yes, this batch of Ganshan dogs was bred privately by me. The higher-ups never approved. Now with the budget cuts, this batch of Ganshan dogs is being neglected. I’m worried about what to do with them.” Zhu Kaixun was troubled.

“Come to me! I’ll take some off your hands. How many pups do you have?” Luo Changjun asked.

“Over twenty. These aren’t purebreds. Everyone’s eyeing the purebreds at the base. If I back down, others will step in. So don’t get any ideas. As for these Ganshan dogs, to be honest, they’re all just local dogs. You wouldn’t be interested. I’m already a laughingstock at the police dog squad because of them.” Zhu Kaixun said bitterly. One can imagine that for someone as dedicated as Zhu Kaixun, investing so much time and effort only to produce a batch of local dogs would indeed make him a joke.

“If you gave me some other breed, I might not take them. But these Ganshan dog pups, I’ll take them all.” Luo Changjun said.

“You’re not planning to start a dog farm, are you?” Zhu Kaixun asked.

“No, don’t worry. I’m not going to raise meat dogs. This guy wants to raise the legendary twenty-four hunting dogs, which requires twenty-four dogs. What kind of pups do we need?” Luo Changjun couldn’t remember, so he turned to Zhang Jiaohua.

“We need four spotted, four black, nine yellow, and seven white. I already have five yellow ones. I need four spotted, four black, four yellow, and seven white, nineteen pups in total.” Zhang Jiaohua said.

“What are you planning to do with so many dogs? You’re not going hunting in the mountains, are you? The Wildlife Protection Act will be enforced soon; you won’t be able to sell the game you catch. Can you afford to feed so many dogs?” Zhu Kaixun knew that although a Ganshan dog didn’t eat much daily, so many mouths to feed were still a significant burden for an average person.

“You don’t need to worry about that. The mountains provide. They can feed themselves. My Shanbao eats meat every day, and it catches its own prey in the mountains.” Zhang Jiaohua wasn’t worried at all. He hardly needed to care for Shanbao, which often brought back game to improve his meals. It wasn’t him raising Shanbao; Shanbao was raising him.

“That’s up to you. Although I have many pups, they may not meet your color requirements. I have plenty of black, yellow, and spotted dogs, but not enough white ones. Can you substitute other colors?” Zhu Kaixun asked.

“How should I know? The old Taoist master told me so.” Zhang Jiaohua casually mentioned the old Taoist master.

“You have an old Taoist master?” Luo Changjun was also hearing about Zhang Jiaohua’s master for the first time.

Zhang Jiaohua nodded. Luo Changjun didn’t know that the old Taoist master was someone Zhang Jiaohua met in his dreams; he thought there was a real Taoist master in the mountains who had taken Zhang Jiaohua as a disciple and taught him how to raise dogs.

“Did the old Taoist master teach you how to raise dogs? Where is he? Can you take me to see him?” Zhu Kaixun wanted to learn from the old Taoist master.

“No.”

Zhang Jiaohua didn’t know how to bring Zhu Kaixun into his dreams to meet the old Taoist master, so he refused.

Zhu Kaixun thought the old Taoist master was a reclusive expert who didn’t see ordinary people, feeling regretful. He missed the chance to learn advanced dog-raising techniques from the old Taoist master.

“Sigh!” Zhu Kaixun sighed.
