To Luo Changjun’s words, Zhu Kaixun was indifferent. He felt that Luo Changjun was an outsider in this regard. Police dogs and regular hunting dogs are not the same. Police dog training is very comprehensive, more professional, and has a scientific training system, which ensures the quality of police dogs—something regular hunting dogs cannot match. A police dog’s daily diet is much more than what Zhu Kaixun himself consumes. Ordinary hunting dogs can never have such good conditions. However, what worried Zhu Kaixun was that the budget for the police dog base was being cut every day. If this continues, the number of police dogs at the base will have to be reduced. Otherwise, the food standards for these police dogs will have to be lowered. Whether reducing food standards or cutting down the number of police dogs, both were unacceptable to Zhu Kaixun.
Zhu Kaixun took one look at Zuan Shanbao and couldn’t move his eyes away. He was a dog expert; otherwise, he wouldn’t be in his current position. He needed to cultivate a large batch of quality police dogs daily. Just by looking at Zuan Shanbao’s eyes, Zhu Kaixun understood that this hunting dog was indeed different.
“Whose dog is this?”
When Zhu Kaixun asked, his eyes were still fixed on Zuan Shanbao, which made Luo Changjun quite unhappy.
“Old Pig! Who are you asking?” Luo Changjun deliberately emphasized the “Zhu” (Pig) character in Zhu Kaixun’s name.
“Not asking you, should I ask this dog? Grey dog, hello, whose dog are you?” Zhu Kaixun responded grumpily.
“Damn! If you’re asking me, shouldn’t you be looking at me?” Luo Changjun knew Zhu Kaixun’s character well. Nothing could attract his attention like a good dog could. Even Zhu Kaixun’s wife would get jealous of the dogs. Luo Changjun once joked that Zhu Kaixun should marry a female dog so he could be with dogs all the time and maybe have a great dog one day.
“This dog has something special.” Zhu Kaixun’s eyes never left Zuan Shanbao.
“Do you want to know whose dog this is?” Luo Changjun waved his hand in front of Zhu Kaixun’s eyes.
Only then did Zhu Kaixun look up at Luo Changjun, “Whose?”
“Far away in the sky, right in front of your eyes.” Luo Changjun was very composed.
“Impossible! Just looking at you, it’s impossible you raised such a dog.” Zhu Kaixun was full of disbelief. If it were someone else, he might hesitate, but not Luo Changjun. Zhu Kaixun also didn’t think the nearby Zhang Jiaohua could raise such a powerful dog. He assumed Zhang Jiaohua was Luo Changjun’s son Luo Zhiyun. Zhu Kaixun’s entire attention was on the dog, and he hadn’t noticed that Zhang Jiaohua was much younger than Luo Zhiyun.
“When did I say it’s mine? This is his dog.” Luo Changjun pointed to Zhang Jiaohua.
“Him? Your son?” Zhu Kaixun naturally didn’t believe it.
“What are you looking at? My son is about to enter junior high. This is a friend’s child, from the countryside. He raised this dog.” Luo Changjun said with annoyance, unable to argue with this brother.
Seeing such a good dog, Zhu Kaixun couldn’t hold back and slowly approached Zuan Shanbao.
“Woof!” Zuan Shanbao growled low, his fur standing on end, body arched, warning Zhu Kaixun to back off.
Zhang Jiaohua hurried over to soothe Zuan Shanbao with his hand.
Zhu Kaixun stopped in his tracks. “Impressive, impressive, this dog is really something! Kid, did you really raise this dog?”
“If I didn’t raise it, would it listen to me?” Zhang Jiaohua gently brushed Zuan Shanbao’s fur, which softened immediately, its fierce expression disappearing as it enjoyed the touch, nuzzling Zhang Jiaohua’s hand.
Being a dog expert, Zhu Kaixun could see the bond between the dog and the boy. There was no doubt that the dog was indeed raised by the child. “Kid, what breed is this dog?”
“Ganshan Dog!” Zhang Jiaohua replied.
Zhu Kaixun had heard of Ganshan Dogs and even had a batch at the police dog squad, which he had specifically sourced from rural areas. He had heard of the mystical abilities of the Meishan Ganshan Dog, so he went out of his way to get some. However, after breeding them, he found that not only did they lack the legendary abilities, but they were also inferior to regular police dogs. With the police dog squad’s budget cuts, the first to be eliminated were the Ganshan Dog breeds.
“This is a Ganshan Dog?” Zhu Kaixun stared in disbelief, recognizing that it indeed resembled the Ganshan Dogs he had bred, but this one had an incomparable spirit.
“How did you raise this dog?” Zhu Kaixun urgently asked. Despite his many years of dog-raising experience, he suddenly found himself not as skilled as a young child, which was hard for him to accept.
“I can tell you, but you won’t be able to raise it like this. A Ganshan Dog only works with a Meishan Water Master. In regular people’s hands, it’s just a local dog. Even if I tell you the method, you won’t be able to raise it.” Zhang Jiaohua said disdainfully. He was annoyed at being ignored earlier and wasn’t a pushover.
Seeing Zhu Kaixun at a loss, Luo Changjun laughed heartily, “Old Zhu, finally having a taste of this, huh? When I asked you for a police dog pup, you were so arrogant. Hey, are we going to stand at the gate all day?”
Zhu Kaixun scratched his head, not minding Zhang Jiaohua’s disdainful look. Prompted by Luo Changjun, he quickly said, “Come on in, let’s talk inside.”
Zhu Kaixun was still smart. As long as they stayed, he believed he could eventually get the secret of raising dogs out of them.
“Jiaohua, let’s go! Uncle Luo is really satisfied today.” Luo Changjun had wanted a police dog to show off for a long time. Zhu Kaixun’s police dogs included many prestigious foreign breeds. Luo Changjun had been interested for a long time, but Zhu Kaixun was inflexible and didn’t give in to his best friend’s request, which had always bothered Luo Changjun.
When Zuan Shanbao stepped into the police dog squad, the police dogs inside barked even more furiously. The police dog squad was their territory. Now, an intruder had come, naturally causing a commotion.
“Woof woof woof…”
All the police dogs went berserk, barking wildly and banging on the iron gates, eager to tear the intruder to pieces.
Zuan Shanbao strutted in, head held high, looking down on all the police dogs.
“Woof woof woof woof…” Feilong, seeing the intruder’s contempt, reared up, paws banging on the iron gate. Whether it was due to carelessness or because Feilong was too pampered by Zhu Kaixun, the gate wasn’t locked, just latched. Being a smart breed, Feilong managed to open the latch, and the gate swung open. Feilong charged out like a black arrow, heading straight for Zuan Shanbao.
Zuan Shanbao wasn’t one to be bullied. Seeing Feilong challenge his authority, he didn’t hesitate and turned into a black flash, charging at Feilong.
“Not good!” Zhu Kaixun shouted, rushing toward them. Feilong was a German Shepherd, much bigger than Zuan Shanbao. Zhu Kaixun feared Feilong might kill Zuan Shanbao instantly. He appreciated Zuan Shanbao not for its strength but for its intelligence. The police force needed dogs more for their sense of smell than their combat abilities. A smart dog was more valuable in solving cases.
Luo Changjun also stood with his mouth open, eyes fixed on the two approaching dogs. He regretted bringing Zhang Jiaohua and his dog here.
Zhang Jiaohua, however, wasn’t worried. He could see that despite the size difference, Zuan Shanbao’s vigor was much stronger than the black police dog’s.
The policemen at the dog squad also watched, smiling. They naturally favored Feilong. As for the mutt, they could only admire its courage. Unfortunately, this was the police dog squad, not some farm. Such a fierce dog might be a king on a farm, but here it was out of its league. Today, this mutt probably wouldn’t survive.
“Feilong! Stop!” Zhu Kaixun shouted, knowing it was too late to stop them.
But Feilong, eyes red with rage, probably couldn’t hear any commands now.
The distance between the two dogs closed, neither showing any signs of retreat. They were ready to defend their honor, no matter the cost. Without any tricks, they collided fiercely.
“Bang!”
The two dogs crashed together, creating a loud impact. Feilong, being heavier, seemed to have the advantage, retreating only two or three steps before stabilizing. Zuan Shanbao, however, was pushed back four or five steps before stopping.
“Woof woof woof…”
“Woof woof woof…”
The two dogs barked at each other, then charged again.
This time, they didn’t collide head-on. Zuan Shanbao ducked low at the last moment and rammed its head into Feilong’s left front leg, lifting Feilong off the ground, sending it flying high.
