Jin Luoluo had no choice but to brave the torrential rain, hurrying through the maze-like imperial residence with a lantern that swayed wildly in her hand.
Although she wore a rain cloak, the downpour was simply too heavy.
The rain found its way through every gap, soaking into her clothes until the icy water made her shiver uncontrollably.
Her calm had long since turned into anxiety.
The rain is coming down so hard…
Could that damned cripple have managed to get out of the hall?
But it’s so dark tonight… What if he slipped in the rain?
What if the freezing rain gave him muscle cramps, and he couldn’t get back up?
That would be awful…
What if he got sick?
The more she thought about it, the more worried she became.
In her haste, her foot slipped, and she fell hard onto the ground.
She scraped her knee badly, and a burning pain shot through it.
But at a time like this, she couldn’t spare any attention for herself.
She got back to her feet and continued onward.
At last, she reached the secluded courtyard.
Everything was shrouded in darkness.
The torrential rain only made the lonely place seem even more eerie.
She had seen no sign of Xiao Luo anywhere along the way.
Could he really still be inside?
Holding up her lantern, she slowly approached the pitch-black hall.
A cold gust of wind swept past her, sending chills all over her body.
The place felt like the setting of a ghost story.
The wooden bar she had wedged across the door was still there.
That eased her mind a little.
Slowly, she pushed the door open.
Inside the cold, dark hall, the faint glow of her lantern illuminated only vague, blurry shadows.
Xiao Luo was among them.
He sat in his wheelchair, shoulders slightly hunched, asleep with his head resting against the backrest.
He looked like an abandoned child.
An overwhelming loneliness surrounded him.
Jin Luoluo’s heart clenched painfully.
“Luoluo? Why are you here?”
Awakened by the lantern’s light, Xiao Luo slowly opened his eyes and looked at her in surprise.
Throwing aside her rain cloak, Jin Luoluo rushed over to him.
“Xiao Luo! Are you all right?”
“Are you feeling sick?”
“I’m sorry… I shouldn’t have left you here.”
“I was too cruel.”
Xiao Luo’s heart overflowed with emotion.
She had come all the way here in the middle of the night, through a violent rainstorm, just to check on him.
What could possibly move him more than that?
She must have cared about him so deeply that she had forgotten all about being angry and rushed here to rescue him.
“I’m fine,” Xiao Luo replied lightly.
“It’s just a little quieter here… and there are a few more mosquitoes than usual.”
“Other than that, it’s nothing serious.”
“I’d even say it was… quite an interesting experience.”
As he spoke, he shifted his body slightly, trying to ease the stiffness that had settled into his limbs.
