Kun City

When Zeng Xiao got off work and saw Secretary Chang already standing at the alley entrance waiting for her, a flicker of disdain crossed her eyes.

Then, a trace of smugness appeared on her face, and she called out loudly, “I thought you wouldn’t dare show up!”

Hearing her voice, Secretary Chang looked over. The moment he saw Zeng Xiao, his expression darkened. He strode over to her, grabbed her wrist, and dragged her to a more secluded spot, shouting angrily in a low voice, “You’re scheming against me!”

Zeng Xiao glanced at the stone-faced Secretary Chang, unfazed. Then she suddenly laughed. “Scheming? How could it be?”

“I’m the biological mother of your child,” she said, gently touching her flat belly with a tender expression.

Hearing this, Secretary Chang’s expression changed, veins bulging on his forehead. Thinking that Zeng Xiao had teamed up with his father to slip pig-estrus-inducing powder into him, he almost wanted to strangle her.

“You shameless woman! Are you that desperate for a man?”

This remark made Zeng Xiao’s face change. She forcefully shook off Secretary Chang’s hand and glared at him coldly.

“Secretary Chang, don’t push your luck.” If it weren’t for the fact that you’re the father of my child, by now you’d be at the police station paying for your actions!”

With that, she stepped forward two paces and nonchalantly tapped his shoulder. A faint, teasing smile played on her lips:

“What you should be doing now is divorcing that woman, Li Yajing, and coming back to marry me! Otherwise, I’ll report you to the Revolutionary Committee for raping me.”

Secretary Chang’s rage instantly fizzled at this bizarre justification. He stared at her, incredulous, as if he’d just heard the world’s biggest joke.

Bribery, trickery, all of it—just so he would marry her?

“So the whole point of all this was just to make me marry you?”

Seeing Secretary Chang’s shocked expression, Zeng Xiao blushed slightly, lowered her gaze, and softly murmured, “Mm.”

Secretary Chang’s eyes flickered with an odd glint. His voice carried a tone that was hard to decipher: “Divorce and marry you, fine. But you must tell me—why do you insist on marrying me?”

Hearing this, Zeng Xiao looked at Secretary Chang, then lowered her eyes, a sarcastic smile curling at her lips.

Hu Shan was right after all. Secretary Chang was a man motivated solely by profit; as long as there was enough benefit, he could marry anyone, betray anyone.

With that thought, Zeng Xiao stepped closer to him.

She rose on her tiptoes, leaning close to his ear, and said flirtatiously, “Of course, it’s because I like you. Otherwise, why would I go to such lengths to frame Li Yajing’s family? Wasn’t it all to marry you?”

Secretary Chang was taken aback. Li Yajing’s family being punished… it was Zeng Xiao’s doing?

He tilted his head, looking at Zeng Xiao’s blooming smile, and his eyes flickered.

In a low voice, he said, “Comrade Zeng, your recent threats didn’t exactly feel like the actions of someone who likes me.”

Zeng Xiao deliberately lowered her head, hiding the disgust on her face from him.

“If I didn’t threaten you, what if you refused to marry me? I went as far as slipping you medicine just to marry you—doesn’t that prove I like you?”

Then she tiptoed, stifling her nausea, and kissed his cheek. She said ambiguously, “My father will be transferred to Jing City soon.”

Secretary Chang froze for a moment. If Zeng Xiao’s father was transferred to Jing City, it would greatly benefit his current career. After all, the Industrial Bureau oversaw all state-owned enterprises.

From then on, if he wanted a real position of power in any factory, it would only take a word from Zeng Xiao’s father.

Thinking this through, he looked at the top of Zeng Xiao’s head and reached out to touch her hair.

With a smile, he said, “Don’t worry, I’ll take responsibility for both of you.”

Zeng Xiao lifted her head, eyes full of deep affection as she smiled at Secretary Chang. “Then I’ll wait for your good news about the divorce.”

Secretary Chang nodded slightly, quietly giving a few instructions before turning and leaving.

Thinking about someone going through so much trouble just to marry him, Secretary Chang felt a surge of pride.

Back at his residence, he saw Lin Yifei pacing in front of his door and tensed.

He quickly approached with a smile. “Cousin, what brings you here?”

Lin Yifei glanced at him coldly. “Why are you back so late?”

Secretary Chang opened the door, inviting Lin Yifei in while explaining with a smile, “Had a few things to take care of on the way, got held up.”

Lin Yifei took a long bench and sat, speaking casually, “Does Yajing have a grudge against Zeng Xiao from your factory?”

Secretary Chang’s heart skipped a beat. Why was Lin Yifei asking this? Did he know about Zeng Xiao and Secretary Chang? Or did he know that Zeng Xiao deliberately framed Li Yajing’s family to marry him?

He needed to probe.

He smiled and turned to Lin Yifei, feigning confusion. “Cousin, why do you ask?”

Lin Yifei pursed his lips, unmoving, his sharp eyes locked on Secretary Chang.

Coldly, he said, “Just answer yes or no!”

Secretary Chang forced his racing heart under control, raising his eyes and pretending to be clueless.

“Cousin, my wife doesn’t even know Zeng Xiao, how could there be a grudge?”

Lin Yifei narrowed his eyes and looked at him coldly. “Tomorrow, you’re coming back to Jing City with me to divorce Yajing.”

Hearing “divorce,” Secretary Chang thought Lin Yifei knew about him and Zeng Xiao, and his face drained of color.

His voice trembled, “Cousin, I… I was wrong…”

“Fine. Since you don’t care for Yajing, we won’t stop you from marrying a better woman,” Lin Yifei said with a mocking glance at Secretary Chang.

Secretary Chang relaxed, realizing Lin Yifei didn’t know about him and Zeng Xiao. Then why did he ask about any grudge between Zeng Xiao and Yajing?

Suddenly, he realized something.

He let out a calm sigh. “Cousin, you don’t know—Zeng Xiao hates Comrade Gu Yihan because of Secretary Jiang’s matter.”

Lin Yifei was momentarily stunned.

Secretary Chang felt a surge of satisfaction, remembering Li Yajing once said her cousin seemed to like Gu Yihan.

“You mean Zeng Xiao has a grudge against Gu Yihan?”

Secretary Chang nodded firmly, indignantly. “Because of a minor grievance, she couldn’t take revenge on Gu Yihan, so she vented on Grandma Gu instead. She reported her for not having an introduction letter to the Revolutionary Committee.”

As he spoke, he glanced cautiously at Lin Yifei, implying that since Zeng Xiao could take revenge on Grandma Gu, she could also retaliate against Li Yajing’s family because of Yajing’s closeness to Gu Yihan.

Lin Yifei sneered, glancing at Secretary Chang. The calculations were clever—trying to get him at odds with Zeng Xiao’s father.

If he won, he would firmly refuse to divorce Li Yajing. If he lost, Secretary Chang could still marry Zeng Xiao.
