At the same time
The large courtyard
“How’s it going? Did Secretary Chang agree to marry you?”
Zeng Xiao buried her face in Secretary Jiang’s chest, feeling his warmth, but her heart ached.
Her lover was right there, yet she couldn’t live openly with him.
Seeing Zeng Xiao silent, Secretary Jiang frowned slightly.
Looking down, he saw her tears streaming down like beads cut from a string, unstoppable.
Helpless, he gently wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes with his fingers.
Softly, he asked, “Secretary Chang didn’t agree?”
Zeng Xiao was silent for a moment, then said, “He agreed.”
At her words, a flash of joy appeared in Secretary Jiang’s eyes.
He pulled Zeng Xiao tightly into his arms, his gaze gleaming with a hint of ferocity.
“Once you’ve secured your footing in Jingshi with the Chang family, I’ll come find you. Then the three of us will be reunited as a family.”
Zeng Xiao held onto Secretary Jiang’s waist tightly and nodded slightly.
“For our son’s sake, and for you, I’ll make sure to get along well with Secretary Chang’s parents. Once the baby is born, you can visit me under the pretext of being a cousin. I’ll find a way to get them to give you a suitable job in Jingshi.”
At this, Zeng Xiao frowned slightly. “It’s just that Secretary Chang is a bit troublesome—he knows you.”
Hearing this, Secretary Jiang patted Zeng Xiao’s back gently, soothing her. “Leave Secretary Chang to me.”
He had connections with all sorts of people in the black market. Handling a Secretary Chang would be like a game to him.
Thinking of all the expulsions and humiliations from various factories in the past two years because of the blemishes on his records, Secretary Jiang wanted nothing more than to kill Gu Yihan, the culprit behind it all.
A gentleman’s revenge is never too late. By the time he reached Jingshi, he would have all the time in the world.
…
Jingshi Family Courtyard
Weekend
Gu Yihan yawned as she stomped downstairs.
Haohao heard footsteps, looked up, and saw Gu Yihan getting up.
A small, cheerful voice rang out: “Mom, good morning!”
Gu Yihan smiled and walked over to him, patting his fluffy hair.
Just as she was about to speak, she heard a “cluck, cluck, cluck” nearby.
Following the sound, she saw the rooster scratching the ground in the courtyard with its claws.
Frowning slightly, Gu Yihan looked down at Haohao, who was lying on the sofa reading.
“Why did you let the rooster out again?”
Haohao looked up at her and murmured, “Mom, Dahua doesn’t like being in the cage.”
Gu Yihan asked, “How do you know Dahua doesn’t like the cage?”
Haohao glanced at the rooster in the yard and said proudly, “Of course I know. Dahua told me.”
Gu Yihan rolled her eyes. She gave Haohao a look and shook her head. “The rooster also told me it wants to be a phoenix in the sky. Do you believe that?”
At that moment, Lu Huailin came out of the kitchen carrying breakfast.
Smiling, he interrupted: “If Dahua likes free range, let him roam. The yard is big enough anyway.”
Gu Yihan glared at Lu Huailin in exasperation, snorted, and turned to the bathroom.
Lu Huailin shook his head with a smile, following her in, eagerly handing her soap and a towel.
“Darling, Dahua has been quite obedient. Ever since you scolded him last time, he hasn’t crowed at dawn.”
After wiping her face, Gu Yihan tossed the towel on the basin rack and gave Lu Huailin a sharp look.
“So you mean let it roam freely in the yard? And poop wherever it wants?”
Hearing this, Lu Huailin shuddered. Just thinking about coming home from work to a yard full of chicken droppings made him shiver.
He was a soldier, used to neatness and order; he could never tolerate a messy house. Chicken droppings were no exception.
He quickly said, “You’re right, darling. Dahua is safest in the cage.”
With that, he took her hand and went to the dining table, quietly serving breakfast.
Haohao pouted, his little lips sticking out.
His father had promised to persuade Mom to let Dahua roam, but in just a few words, Mom had already changed her mind.
Gu Yihan saw Haohao puffing his cheeks and biting into his egg, a small smile curling at the corner of her lips.
Little rascal.
He didn’t realize who he was dealing with. With Lu Huailin’s neat-freak nature—he couldn’t tolerate even a single thing out of place—there was no way he could handle a yard full of “chicken feathers.”
The family was just having breakfast when Li Yajing and Lin Yifei walked in, carrying a mesh bag of things.
Gu Yihan quickly stood up, smiling as she greeted them.
“Yajing, Captain Lin, why are you here so early?”
Lin Yifei glanced at Lu Huailin, who was efficiently clearing the table, and smiled. “Xiaohan, long time no see.”
Gu Yihan stiffened at his words. It sounded as if she and Lin Yifei were very familiar.
Haohao’s big, round eyes stared curiously at the tall man in front of him.
Lu Huailin, hearing Lin Yifei, slammed his bowl down on the table with a “clang” in frustration and glared coldly at him.
Seeing this, Li Yajing rolled her eyes at Lin Yifei, looped her arm through Gu Yihan’s, and sat on the sofa.
She took a deep breath and slowly said, “Xiaohan, I’m divorced.”
Gu Yihan smiled faintly and said, “Glad you’ve escaped the sea of suffering. I hope you get what you wished for.”
Li Yajing held Gu Yihan’s hand tightly, looked into her eyes, and sincerely thanked her.
“Xiaohan, thank you. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t know when I could have escaped this misery.”
Gu Yihan waved her hand casually with a smile. “No need to be so polite. We’ve known each other for a long time anyway.”
Meanwhile, Lin Yifei placed the mesh bag on the dining table and picked up Haohao.
Smiling, he said, “Your son doesn’t look like you.”
Lu Huailin shot Lin Yifei a glare, annoyed. “You must be blind.”
He stepped forward, holding Haohao in his arms, and glanced at Lin Yifei proudly.
“Look, he’s my exact copy.”
Seeing the identical face, Lin Yifei felt a mix of emotions.
If he had followed Li Yajing’s advice and gone on a blind date with Gu Yihan, would such a beautiful and adorable child have been his?
But there were no “ifs.”
And in this world, there was no remedy for regret.
If there were, he would ask for one.
Lu Huailin noticed Lin Yifei’s gaze lingering on his wife and his expression instantly darkened.
In a blink, he moved, blocking Lin Yifei’s view.
