At the Chang family residence in the government compound—
Madam Chang sat on the sofa wearing reading glasses, reading the newspaper. When she heard Li Yajing humming as she walked in, she looked up and smiled.
“In a good mood today?”
Li Yajing went to the dining table, poured herself a glass of water, then turned back with a grin.
“Hehe, Mom, I’ll definitely exceed my target this month.”
“Oh? Really?” Madam Chang put down the newspaper and looked at her curiously. “Did your friend help you?”
After finishing her water, Li Yajing sat beside her.
“Yes. Before Xiaohan came to Beijing, I already asked her husband to help me look into things.”
Madam Chang lowered her eyes casually.
“Your friend’s husband is a division commander?”
Li Yajing glanced at her meaningfully, then nodded with a smile.
“Yes. He’s not even thirty-five yet and he’s already a division commander.”
Madam Chang was surprised.
“Thirty-five? Is your friend in her second marriage?”
“Pfft—”
Li Yajing couldn’t help laughing.
“Mom, what are you thinking? They’re each other’s first spouses.”
Madam Chang smiled awkwardly.
“Your friend is very outstanding.”
Li Yajing lifted her chin proudly, as if the praise were meant for herself.
“Of course. She’s young, beautiful, and well-educated.”
Madam Chang narrowed her eyes slightly. She didn’t care whether Gu Yihan was pretty or educated.
What she cared about was her network and background.
A division commander in his thirties—so young, with a bright future ahead.
Was Li Yajing really as close to his wife as she claimed?
Thinking of this, Madam Chang took Li Yajing’s hand and patted it gently.
With a gentle smile, she asked, “Xiaoya, how are things between you and Zhengfan? Has he ever bullied you?”
Li Yajing: “……”
She didn’t understand why her mother-in-law suddenly asked that.
Unable to answer, she lowered her head and pretended to be shy.
Seeing her blushing, Madam Chang smiled.
Then she changed the topic.
“I was worried you wouldn’t get used to living in a new place. But now that I know you have familiar friends in Beijing, I’m relieved.”
“Mom…” Li Yajing exclaimed shyly on purpose.
But inside, she felt extremely uncomfortable.
Her work and living environment had changed—of course she wasn’t used to it.
No concern earlier, no concern later. Now that she knew Li Yajing had a well-connected friend, she suddenly started acting caring.
Did they really think she was stupid?
While she was complaining inwardly, she heard the door open.
Looking up, she saw Mr. Chang and Chang Zhengfan walk in one after another.
She immediately stood up and smiled, taking Zhengfan’s briefcase.
“Honey, didn’t you say yesterday that Comrade Gu wants to find a job?” Mr. Chang asked.
“Yes,” Li Yajing replied. “She’s bored staying at home. What a pity she sold her old job. Otherwise, she could’ve transferred to Beijing and gone back to factory work.”
Li Yajing shot him a look.
“She lives in the family compound. It’s far from the city. How is she supposed to commute?”
Madam Chang frowned and added, “Isn’t her husband a division commander? Why didn’t he help her find a job?”
Li Yajing explained calmly, “Job quotas in the compound are limited.”
Zhengfan sat down across from Madam Chang and said with a smile, “Mom, isn’t Aunt Su in the military compound? Ask her if their publicity department is hiring.”
Madam Chang looked at him in surprise.
“Zhengfan, you know Xiaoya’s friend too?”
“Yes,” he replied. “She’s an accountant at the Kun City Textile Factory.”
Hearing this, Madam Chang glanced at Li Yajing, her lips sinking slightly.
After a moment, she suddenly asked, “You want me to help her find a job?”
Noticing her tone, Zhengfan quickly went over and sat beside her.
“Mom, just call Aunt Su and ask. It’s just one phone call. Whether she hires Gu Yihan or not is up to her. We’re just passing along the information.”
Aunt Su was just like his mother—someone who liked networking.
He didn’t believe that once she knew the wife of Lu Huailin wanted a job, she wouldn’t try to arrange something.
Madam Chang glanced at him, puzzled.
“Zhengfan, you know jobs are scarce these days—one position per person, no extras. But I can talk to Aunt Su and see if she can create one more position…”
Before she could finish, Li Yajing interrupted.
“Mom, no need. Xiaohan doesn’t lack job opportunities. If she wants one, she can find one anytime.”
Madam Chang’s face instantly darkened.
So their carefully chosen daughter-in-law was someone who sided with outsiders.
She contradicted her so eagerly, afraid she might take advantage of Gu Yihan?
Didn’t that mean Li Yajing valued her friend more than her own family?
At that moment, Mr. Chang came out of the kitchen and said coldly, “That place is far from the city, and there are far more people than positions.”
In other words, Li Yajing’s claim was nonsense.
Zhengfan frowned, glancing between his parents.
He didn’t understand how a simple topic had turned into an argument.
Without another word, he stood up, put his arm around Li Yajing’s shoulders, and led her into the bedroom.
Inside, he sighed softly. “Wife, there’s no need to argue with family over an outsider.”
Li Yajing ignored him and sat down at the dressing table.
Looking at him through the mirror, she sneered.
“Your family is really calculating. You want to use an easily obtained job to latch onto Gu Yihan.”
Zhengfan realized she had misunderstood and smiled helplessly, patting her shoulder.
“That’s not what you think. If I really wanted to rely on Gu Yihan, back at the Kun City factory, I would’ve—”
“Enough,” Li Yajing cut him off impatiently.
“I don’t know what you’re thinking. But I know exactly what your mom is planning. She deliberately talked about how scarce jobs are, how hard they are to get. Isn’t it just so I’d pass those words on to Gu Yihan? So she’d always remember this ‘favor,’ and next time your family needs help, you can ask her without shame!”
Zhengfan looked at her helplessly.
“Wife, you’re too biased against my family.”
Li Yajing shot him a cold glance, stood up, lay down on the bed, and closed her eyes, ignoring him.
Seeing this, Zhengfan clenched his teeth in anger.
With a loud bang, he slammed the door and walked out.
