Haohao and Zhao Hu walked out of school hand in hand. When Haohao looked up and saw Lu Huailin waiting at the gate, his eyes lit up.
He let go and ran over, spinning around happily.
“Dad! Why are you here?”
Lu Huailin laughed. “What? Am I not allowed to come pick you up?”
Haohao pouted. “You haven’t come in over a month.”
“All right, stop acting spoiled after getting good treatment. Doesn’t your mom pick you up every day?”
Zhao Hu, who had just walked over, exclaimed in surprise, “Ah… Uncle Lu, you knew Aunt Gu was secretly following us too?”
Haohao grinned. “Brother Zhao Hu and I pretended we didn’t notice Mom following us.”
Lu Huailin glared at him and put on a stern face.
“You little brat. Why do you think your mom does that?”
Seeing this, Haohao quickly grabbed his hand and acted cute.
“Dad, I know I was wrong.”
Lu Huailin looked down at his son’s tender little face and felt a pang in his heart. His wife had never cared for him the way she cared for Haohao.
Hearing Haohao apologize so sweetly, he gave a cold, proud “hmph,” firmly refusing to admit that he was jealous of his own son.
Holding Haohao with one hand and Zhao Hu with the other, he said, “Let’s go. Uncle will take you home.”
On the way back, the two boys chattered endlessly about fun things at school.
Suddenly, Haohao looked up and said in a soft voice, “Dad, I want to go to first grade.”
“First grade?”
“Yes. I don’t like playing with kindergarten kids. They’re so dirty.”
“That’s right, Uncle,” Zhao Hu added. “You don’t know—Haohao’s deskmate always has a long string of snot. I told him to wipe it, but he wouldn’t. He just sucked it back in.”
“Haohao almost threw up from disgust.”
Lu Huailin immediately imagined a filthy child with a runny nose and frowned.
“I’ll talk to your teacher tomorrow.”
Haohao’s eyes lit up.
“Thank you, Dad!”
When Zhao Hu saw Auntie Zhang waiting at the door, he let go of Lu Huailin’s hand and ran over happily.
“Grandma, your grandson is back!”
Auntie Zhang smiled and patted his head, then glanced at Lu Huailin holding Haohao’s hand, her lips curving slightly.
“Commander Lu, doesn’t your wife know that kids in our compound have to go to the training camp at twelve?”
Lu Huailin shook his head.
“I haven’t had time to tell her yet.”
Auntie Zhang twitched her lips.
“Commander Lu, your wife didn’t look very happy today.”
After saying that, she led Zhao Hu away.
She thought to herself: No wonder Gu Yihan was in a bad mood.
It was just one sentence—did he really need to wait for an ‘auspicious day’ to say it?
Lu Huailin didn’t understand her meaning and went home with Haohao.
Gu Yihan came out carrying freshly cooked braised pork and smiled when she saw them.
“Huailin, there’s steamed egg custard and chicken wontons in the kitchen for Haohao.”
“Got it, honey. You rest, I’ll bring them out.”
As he spoke, he secretly observed her expression. She didn’t seem unhappy at all.
Haohao trotted over to Gu Yihan.
Looking up with his rosy little face, he asked softly, “Mom, Grandma Zhang said you were in a bad mood today. Did I make you angry?”
“I’m in a bad mood? Why don’t I know that myself?”
Just then, Lu Huailin placed the egg custard and wontons on the table.
“She was just joking,” he said with a smile.
He scooped ten wontons into a small bowl and put it in front of his wife.
Gu Yihan didn’t think much and began eating.
“Honey, why aren’t you eating the braised pork?” he asked.
She glanced at the plate of fatty pork in the center of the table. Just looking at it made her feel greasy.
She shook her head quickly. “I can’t eat such fatty meat.”
Haohao stared at the thick slice of pork, which had only a tiny bit of lean meat.
“Mom, why didn’t you buy lean meat?”
He liked lean meat. Even though it got stuck in his teeth, it was chewier and tastier than egg custard.
Gu Yihan looked at his frowning little face and laughed.
“The lean meat was sold out today. I’ll buy some next time.”
After dinner, Gu Yihan rested on the sofa while Lu Huailin, wearing an apron, washed the dishes and cleaned up.
“Oh right, Huailin,” she said, “from this month on, send Grandma five yuan every month.”
“What happened?” he asked quickly.
He came out of the kitchen and sat beside her, holding her hand.
“Did something happen in Kun City?”
Seeing his father rush over, Haohao dropped the broom and squeezed between them, imitating his dad by tightly holding her fingers and looking at her worriedly.
Gu Yihan laughed softly at their identical actions.
“Today, Li Yajing came and told me some things about Grandma Gu.”
She told him everything about Grandma Gu and Gu Meng.
“I’ll ask my comrades there to find out what’s really going on tomorrow,” Lu Huailin said.
She nodded. “Mm.”
Meanwhile, in Kun City’s courtyard—
Gu Meng sat at the table, picking her teeth while instructing Grandma Gu.
“Grandma, write to Gu Yihan and tell her to send ten more yuan every month.”
Grandma Gu hesitated and shook her head.
“Xiao Meng, people shouldn’t be so greedy.”
“Greedy?”
Gu Meng laughed as if she’d heard a huge joke.
This old woman’s pockets were full every month, yet she still called her greedy?
If it weren’t for Gu Yihan, would she have suffered on the farm for over two years?
Qin Shou glanced at Gu Meng’s dark face, a trace of mockery flashing in his eyes.
Did she really think money grew on trees?
“Grandma, even one more cent is good. One more yuan is better.”
Grandma Gu remained unmoved. She knew very well that her relationship with Gu Yihan couldn’t withstand more trouble.
Seeing her stay silent, Gu Meng continued coaxing her.
“Grandma, are you stupid? If she can give you forty yuan a month, she can give you fifty. She’s rich—she won’t care about ten yuan.”
“Shut up!”
Qin Shou stood up irritably and glared at her.
“Don’t push your luck. It already cost two hundred yuan to get you back.”
Then he looked at Grandma Gu.
“And don’t be happy too soon. If Gu Yihan stops giving you money because of her, you two can get out of my house.”
With that, he slammed the door and left.
