Sigh…
Gu Yihan lay sprawled on the sofa, one arm as a pillow, her legs crossed.
Her unfocused gaze drifted toward the warm yellow light bulb above her head.
She used to envy people who could sleep until they woke up naturally, lie around until their legs went numb, eat when hungry, drink when thirsty—living like carefree “salted fish.”
But now that it was her turn, she felt like she was about to get depressed from lying around too much.
After breakfast every day, she was left alone at home, staring at a house that was both quiet and empty.
So quiet that even a loud fart would echo.
The silence was terrifying.
She tried to find things to do, but soon realized—
Her self-discipline was terrible.
She couldn’t read for long without zoning out. The radio only played revolutionary model operas, quotations from leaders, and revolutionary songs. They repeated every day until her ears felt calloused.
She really wanted to find a job to pass the time.
Even if she didn’t talk—just being around people and watching them would be enough.
Bang, bang, bang.
A knock at the door interrupted her thoughts.
She immediately got up and hurried over.
When she opened the door, she saw Li Yajing in a yellow wool coat.
“Hi, Xiaohan! Are you happy to see me? Excited?” Li Yajing waved cheerfully, smiling at the stunned Gu Yihan.
Gu Yihan snapped out of it, stepped forward, and linked her arm with hers.
“Happy! I’m super happy! Sister Yajing, you have no idea—I’ve been stuck at home so long I’m about to grow fur!”
Li Yajing followed her inside and sat on the sofa. Seeing Gu Yihan happily making honey water, she couldn’t help laughing.
She teased, “What? Your husband can support you, you don’t have to work, and you’re still unhappy?”
Gu Yihan shot her an annoyed look.
“It has nothing to do with whether he can support me. I just can’t sit still. I’ve been at home too long—I’m completely sluggish.”
She handed over the honey water and sat beside her.
Li Yajing took it and laughed lightly. “You really don’t have the fate to enjoy comfort.”
Gu Yihan waved her hand.
“You don’t know. The first month or two felt fine. But after staying home for more than three months, everything feels wrong. It’s so boring. Lately, I even get angry easily. I can barely control my temper.”
Li Yajing looked at her in surprise. She had thought she was joking.
“When you’re bored, you can visit neighbors.”
Gu Yihan shook her head.
“Most of the military wives here have jobs. The few who don’t are still busy—cleaning, washing clothes, cooking.”
Li Yajing thought about it and felt she was right.
Staying home long-term with no job and no one to talk to would drive anyone crazy.
“By the way, Xiaohan, there’s something I want to tell you.”
“What is it?”
Instead of answering immediately, Li Yajing held Gu Yihan’s hand.
In a low voice, she said, “You know I lived in Hu Shan’s old house back in Kuncheng.”
Gu Yihan nodded. “I know. Did something happen to Hu Shan?”
Li Yajing shook her head, hesitating.
She didn’t know whether to tell her about Grandma Gu.
If she didn’t say anything, she felt bad letting her friend be deceived.
If she did, she worried Gu Yihan might think she was trying to sow discord between her and her grandmother.
Seeing her hesitation, Gu Yihan guessed it was related to her.
Thinking it over, the only relevant person in the courtyard was her grandmother.
She asked tentatively, “Sister Yajing… is it about my grandma?”
Li Yajing sighed and nodded.
“Xiaohan, don’t send money to your grandma every month anymore. She doesn’t deserve you being so good to her.”
Gu Yihan froze for a moment.
“Did my grandma do something?”
“I’m not trying to stir things up, but… she treats you like a fool with money.”
Li Yajing paused, thinking of how Grandma Gu bragged daily about how obedient Qin Shou and Gu Meng were—while never mentioning that everything she ate and used was sent by Gu Yihan.
“She used the money you sent to bribe the people who sent Gu Meng to the farm and got her released early.”
“What? Gu Meng was released?” Gu Yihan was shocked.
Li Yajing nodded angrily.
“Your grandma said Gu Meng never hit her or hurt her. She said you made a fuss over nothing and misled everyone into thinking Gu Meng abused her.”
“And people believed that? Everyone in the courtyard saw my grandma being sent to the military hospital!”
Li Yajing glanced at her and said slowly, “Your grandma is healthy now, eats well, sleeps well. So people think she was never abused.”
Gu Yihan laughed in anger.
Back then, Grandma Gu had been beaten half to death by Gu Meng.
If not for the water from her space, she might not even be alive.
Now her recovery had become ‘proof’ that Gu Meng was innocent.
Li Yajing carefully watched Gu Yihan’s half-smiling expression.
She felt conflicted—was Gu Yihan angry at her grandma, or at her for meddling?
At first, she hadn’t wanted to interfere.
But later she learned that Gu Meng had been sent away by Gu Yihan herself.
That proved they were on bad terms.
Now Gu Meng was back, living off Gu Yihan’s money.
As her friend, she naturally stood on Gu Yihan’s side.
She didn’t want someone who opposed her to cling to her and suck her blood.
“Xiaohan… are you angry?” Li Yajing asked softly.
Gu Yihan looked at her and tugged her lips into a small smile.
“Sister Yajing, I’m not angry.”
Li Yajing finally relaxed.
“I was afraid you’d think I was nosy.”
Gu Yihan tightened her grip on her hand and shook her head with a smile.
“I’m grateful to you. Why would I blame you?”
She meant it.
If Li Yajing hadn’t told her, she’d never know her grandma was using her money to play savior.
“Oh, right,” Gu Yihan said, “did you come to ask about getting your marriage certificate at the Civil Affairs Bureau?”
Li Yajing nodded shyly.
Gu Yihan smiled.
“Lu Huailin said whenever you need it, just tell him. He’s already talked to the women’s director in the unit.”
Li Yajing hugged her excitedly.
“Xiaohan, thank you!”
Gu Yihan patted her back and whispered, “Of course. We’ve been friends for seven or eight years.”
