When Haohao heard Lu Huailin’s voice, he immediately turned around.
He stretched out his arms and complained aggrievedly, “Dad, this bad woman said Mom is a vixen. She even said I’m Uncle He’s son.”
Haohao relayed everything clearly.
Lu Huailin picked him up. After hearing his words, his eyes narrowed slightly as he glanced at He Shengli.
He Shengli shuddered at Haohao’s version of events and looked at him resentfully. The kid had twisted the whole thing out of shape.
Lu Huailin snorted coldly. “She must be blind. He’s that ugly—how could he possibly have such a beautiful and adorable son like you?”
He Shengli rubbed his forehead and hurriedly explained, in detail, the real cause of the dispute between Wu Meili and Haohao.
He was afraid that if he spoke any later, he’d be drowned in the fifty-year-old vinegar jar of jealousy Lu Huailin carried around.
After listening, Lu Huailin shot Wu Meili a sharp look and asked coldly, “You’re Chief of Staff Gao’s daughter-in-law?”
Wu Meili felt as if an invisible chill was surrounding Lu Huailin. Her heart trembled as she replied nervously, “Yes.”
Lu Huailin said lightly, “Chief of Staff Gao should go to the military hospital and have his eyes checked.”
With that, he turned and left, carrying Haohao in his arms.
Wu Meili’s face instantly turned pale.
When the others saw Lu Huailin and He Shengli leave, they all let out a breath of relief.
“That scared me to death.”
“My heart’s still pounding.”
“Meili, you’d better stop gossiping about leaders’ family members. If you anger them, all of us combined wouldn’t be enough to deal with the consequences.”
“Exactly. He’s a leader—his rank is even one level higher than your father-in-law’s.”
Wu Meili said nothing. She glanced at them indifferently, picked up her small stool, and walked away.
She would no longer associate with these people.
And she would never again discuss Gu Yihan in front of outsiders.
Gu Yihan came out of the kitchen carrying bowls of noodles with gravy. Seeing Lu Huailin and Haohao sitting on the sofa, she asked in confusion, “Why did you pick up Haohao? Where’s Xiao He?”
Lu Huailin walked to the dining table and sat down with a smile. “We ran into each other on the way back, so I told him to head home.”
Haohao stomped over to the table angrily, climbed onto a chair, and said in a wronged tone, “It’s all Dad’s fault! He didn’t make the bad woman apologize!”
Gu Yihan paused while serving the noodles, her brows knitting slightly.
She looked suspiciously at the father and son. “Who’s the bad woman?”
Lu Huailin had no choice but to recount what had just happened at the family compound.
After hearing the story, Gu Yihan handed the ladle to Lu Huailin and walked over to Haohao, picking him up.
She kissed his cheek. “Haohao has grown up. You’re a little man now—you can even protect Mommy.”
Haohao’s eyes curved into crescents at her praise.
“Baby, tell Mommy—if Uncle He hadn’t been there today, would you have been able to beat Comrade Wu Meili?”
Haohao looked at his tiny frame, then at Gu Yihan’s, and shook his head like a rattle drum.
“Mom, I couldn’t. The bad woman is as tall as you.”
Gu Yihan smiled. “Mommy is very proud that you want to protect me. But if a bad person hurts Haohao, Mommy will be heartbroken and cry. If you run into something like this again when you’re alone, you must come home and tell Mom and Dad first, okay?”
Haohao was still young and didn’t understand the deeper meaning. He only remembered that if he was bullied, he could come home and complain—Mom and Dad would stand up for him.
Lu Huailin added with a grin, “If it’s a kid your age bullying you, and you can’t beat them, don’t come home.”
Haohao waved his little hand proudly. “No one in my class can beat me!”
Lu Huailin couldn’t help but laugh at his proud little expression.
“Alright, hurry up and eat. The noodles will get soggy.”
Lu Huailin saluted playfully. “Yes, ma’am!”
Haohao followed suit and shouted loudly, “Yes, Mom!”
Gu Yihan watched the two of them, a gentle smile tugging at her lips.
This was the life she loved—ordinary yet warm.
The next morning
At the Zhao household
Zhao Xu opened the wardrobe and rummaged through it while asking, “Wife, where are my underwear?”
Auntie Zhang lay on the bed, half-asleep, pointing toward the basket behind the door. “Over there!”
“Where? I don’t see them.”
With his back to her, Zhao Xu buried his head in the cabinet and turned it upside down, but couldn’t find a single pair.
“In the basket behind the door!”
Zhao Xu hurried to the door and saw that his underwear and socks were piled together in the basket.
He scoffed. “Didn’t you say socks and underwear shouldn’t be put together? Aren’t you doing the same thing?”
As he bent down to pick up a pair and shook them out, a faint sour odor wafted into his nose.
Frowning, Zhao Xu sniffed around the bedroom. “Wife, do you smell something weird in here?”
Auntie Zhang yawned and slowly sat up, looking at him curiously. “No.”
“No?”
“Did I smell wrong?”
Auntie Zhang puckered her lips and sniffed hard. Nothing.
But when her eyes landed on the big pair of underwear in Zhao Xu’s hand, a look of realization flashed through her eyes.
Smiling, she said, “It’s probably coming from you.”
Zhao Xu immediately lifted his arm and sniffed his armpit. “No smell.”
Suppressing her laughter, Auntie Zhang cleared her throat. “Try smelling your right armpit.”
Zhao Xu raised his right arm. The large underwear swung up and covered his head, and a sharp sour stench shot straight up his nose.
Seeing his ridiculous posture, Auntie Zhang burst out laughing.
Zhao Xu quickly threw away the culprit and glared at her. “Wife, what’s going on?”
Auntie Zhang gradually stopped laughing at the sight of his darkened expression.
She shot him a look. “Can’t you wash your underwear and socks after your shower? I’m busy from morning till night—how do I have time to think about washing your clothes every day?”
Zhao Xu froze. He walked over and touched her forehead.
“Do you have a fever?”
Auntie Zhang slapped his hand away. “You’re the one with a fever!”
“No fever? Then why are you talking nonsense?” he asked in confusion.
Auntie Zhang pushed him away angrily. “What kind of twisted logic is that? If I don’t wash your underwear, there’s something wrong with my brain?”
Zhao Xu didn’t have time to argue about washing underwear. “What am I supposed to wear today?”
Auntie Zhang got out of bed and glanced down at him lazily. “Wear pants. Or are you planning to go out naked?”
Zhao Xu was so angry he almost cursed. Grinding his teeth, he said, “Hurry up and think of a solution. I don’t feel secure without underwear.”
Unmoved, Auntie Zhang replied slowly, “If you’d wash them yourself after your shower every day, there wouldn’t be this problem.”
Then she added mockingly, “It’s fine if you don’t wear any. At most, things will just sway a little when you run.”
Zhao Xu stared at her in disbelief, not expecting her to say something like that.
Furious, he reopened the wardrobe, took out one of Auntie Zhang’s pairs, and put it on. Though it was a bit tight, it was better than going without.
