Without realizing it, they had already been at the military housing compound for more than a week.
After sending Haohao back home, Gu Yihan looked at the large yard. It felt a shame not to plant some vegetables.
She thought for a moment, then went to borrow a hoe from Auntie Zhang’s house. Back home, she began loosening the soil in the yard.
After more than an hour of digging, she was exhausted, her waist and back aching.
Looking at the palms of her hands, rubbed red by the handle of the hoe, she felt a fiery sting.
“Pffft.”
Auntie Zhang leaned against the door, laughing as she watched Gu Yihan. She explained, “Your yard hasn’t been tilled for years. The soil’s really hard. How could a delicate young daughter-in-law like you dig it?”
Gu Yihan stood the hoe against the wall and noticed the basket hanging on Auntie Zhang’s wrist.
Smiling, she asked, “Auntie, are you going to buy something?”
Auntie Zhang nodded. “I heard the production team delivered live chickens today. I wanted to ask if you’d like to buy one?”
Gu Yihan’s timing was perfect. That morning, her father-in-law had called, saying he would come to the compound tomorrow to see Haohao.
She had been worrying about what ingredients to prepare.
Smiling, she said, “Auntie, wait a moment. I’ll grab a basket and go with you.”
After saying this, she turned and went back inside.
Before long, Gu Yihan came out carrying a basket, and the two headed toward the service area.
Auntie Zhang leaned close to Gu Yihan and whispered, “Xiaohan, I want to ask you something.”
“What’s up?”
Auntie Zhang asked, “If you ever angered the men of the house, how would you make it up to them?”
Gu Yihan looked at her in surprise. “Did you quarrel with Commissioner Zhao?”
Auntie Zhang quickly shook her head. “Not me—it was another military wife who upset the men of the house.”
Gu Yihan studied Auntie Zhang’s burning gaze, sensing that something was off.
She thought for a moment. “I’ve never quarreled, so I don’t know how to soothe someone.”
Auntie Zhang looked disappointed.
At the vegetable stand, many military wives were lining up.
Gu Yihan and Auntie Zhang waited for more than ten minutes and saw only two droopy roosters left.
“Why are they both male?”
Auntie Zhang frowned and muttered.
Gu Yihan didn’t care about male or female and smiled brightly. “Uncle, I’ll take a rooster.”
“All right,”
The vendor swiftly grabbed the rooster by its wings and tied its wings and legs with straw rope.
He cheerfully placed it into Gu Yihan’s basket.
On a patch of open ground in the housing compound, Wu Meili sat on a small stool, cracking sunflower seeds while spreading gossip. “Guess how old Director Lu’s wife is?”
“She can’t be that old. Definitely older than us.”
“Yeah, she must be older. Anyone who could become a director isn’t young. Her wife can’t be younger than us.”
Wu Meili sneered, “She actually looks younger than me. Her child seems less than four years old.”
“Really?”
The young military wives leaned in, eager to gossip.
Most of them were married into the compound, didn’t work, and enjoyed listening to neighborhood chatter.
Wu Meili smiled mysteriously and deliberately raised her voice. “Is that even a question?”
“I saw it with my own eyes. She’s young, but looks sly and alluring.”
“Whoa, Director Lu is an old cow eating young grass?”
A young wife gasped in surprise.
“What old cow eating young grass? Maybe that vixen Gu Yihan was after Director Lu’s power, crying and begging to marry him…”
Before she could finish, a soccer ball came crashing down from above onto Wu Meili’s back.
“Ouch…”
Haohao ran over with his little legs, picked up the soccer ball, his big round eyes glaring at her.
“You bad woman, talking bad about my mom. I’ll hit you to death!”
With all his little strength, he hurled the soccer ball at Wu Meili’s chest.
Wu Meili jumped up; the ball hit her leg and bounced back.
He Shengli, who arrived just in time, grabbed the ball and scooped up Haohao.
He looked down at Wu Meili with a cold, piercing gaze. “A person with a dirty heart sees filth everywhere.”
Wu Meili, seeing He Shengli in uniform, thought he was Lu Huailin and widened her eyes in disbelief.
How could he be so young?
The few women who had been gossiping looked at the expressionless He Shengli and thought the same—they assumed he was Lu Huailin, frozen in place, too scared to speak.
Haohao hated this bad woman. He didn’t know how to curse, only to shout:
“You’re the vixen! Your whole family are vixens! You’re the bad vixen! Your parents are farting vixens!”
Haohao felt if she had criticized his mom, he had to fight back by insulting her parents, too. That way he wouldn’t be at a loss.
“I…I…” Wu Meili stuttered, glancing at He Shengli standing coldly by. She couldn’t say a word.
He Shengli looked down at Haohao and quietly said, “Haohao, let’s go home first.”
Haohao looked up at He Shengli, shook his head, feeling he had forgotten something. Suddenly, his eyes lit up.
With a stern face, he turned to Wu Meili and said seriously: “Apologize.”
Wu Meili froze for a moment, then realized: “You want me to apologize? Why should I?”
Haohao, seeing she didn’t want to apologize, waved his little hand and repeated: “You must apologize to my mom!”
In his little mind, this bad woman had almost hurt him that day. Mom made her apologize then. Today, she talked bad about mom—she also had to apologize.
He Shengli saw Haohao furrow his small brows. The expression was just like Lu Huailin when angry, as if carved from the same mold.
Suppressing a smile, he glanced coldly at Wu Meili. “Comrade, spreading false rumors and gossiping in secret—shouldn’t you apologize?”
Wu Meili’s eyes instantly reddened. She pointed at He Shengli. “You’re bullying me.”
The female comrades behind her tugged her sleeve and whispered: “Meili, don’t argue. Admit you were wrong first. He’s the director.”
Wu Meili felt a lump in her throat, knowing she couldn’t confront him head-on. She had been gossiping about Gu Yihan and her family heard it.
With no choice, she took a deep breath and stepped in front of He Shengli and Haohao.
She looked wronged and said, “Director Lu, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have talked about your wife.”
He Shengli froze at her words.
Haohao, upon hearing her, immediately exploded. His childish voice rang out: “You’re blind…”
Lu Huailin, walking along the road, heard Haohao and came over, catching the tail end of his words.
He quietly scolded: “Haohao, what are you saying!”
