He Shengli stopped his jeep about a hundred meters from the photo studio. He turned to Gu Yihan in the back seat and smiled: “Sis-in-law, I’m going to the department store. I didn’t buy anything for my partner—can I come back for you in thirty minutes?”

After saying this, he awkwardly scratched his head.

Gu Yihan looked up at He Shengli. Seeing his ears turn red with shyness, she smiled and said, “Of course.”

She then opened the car door, bent down, and picked up Haohao. She said to Grandma Gu, “Grandma, can you hold Haohao’s clothes for me?”

“Don’t worry, I won’t forget,” Grandma Gu said with a smile as she picked up the bag with Haohao’s outfit.

The master at the Red Star Photo Studio was standing behind the counter, organizing the freshly developed photos.

Hearing the door open, he looked up and saw the three of them enter, momentarily stunned.

He then put down the photos, smiled, and came out from behind the counter to greet them: “Are you here to take the baby’s first-year photos?”

Gu Yihan smiled faintly at the enthusiastic photographer and nodded.

The photographer grinned. This family really cared about their child. His gaze fell on Haohao—what a lively child, with a pair of big round eyes curiously looking at him.

His long eyelashes fluttered like two little fans.

He smiled and praised, “This child is so upright and proper, just like your husband.”

Gu Yihan was surprised and smiled, showing a row of neat teeth. “Master, your memory is really impressive.”

“Since last year, no couple who came to our studio has had looks surpassing yours,” the photographer said as he picked up the camera, loading the film with a cheerful smile.

Hearing this compliment to her and Lu Huailin, Gu Yihan’s lips curved slightly. She agreed with the photographer to take three photos.

Haohao would have one photo in his little military uniform and one in suspenders.

Then the three of them would take a family photo together.

Just as the photographer was taking the group photo of Gu Yihan, Grandma Gu, and Haohao, Song Zhi walked in holding her child.

“Xiaohan?”

Song Zhi was surprised to see Gu Yihan. She happily walked to their side, waiting for the photographer to finish setting up.

Holding her child, she came over and said excitedly, “What a coincidence! You’re here to take photos too?”

Gu Yihan thought it was fate—they had gone together last time after taking photos, and now they met again. She smiled, patted Haohao’s head, and said, “Haohao is one year old, so we’re taking a photo to commemorate it.”

“Xiaohan, we’re thinking the same thing,” Song Zhi said excitedly.

Gu Yihan glanced at Song Zhi’s son. She remembered he was three months older than Haohao.

She asked curiously, “Sister Song, you didn’t take photos for his first birthday?”

“My little Qiu wasn’t feeling well on his first birthday. I just came today to make it up,” Song Zhi said, smiling at Gu Yihan.

Meanwhile, On the other side, Grandma Gu suddenly felt a bit of stomach pain and needed to use the restroom. She anxiously walked to the photographer adjusting the camera and whispered, “Master, is there a restroom nearby?”

The photographer looked up at the worried Grandma Gu and smiled: “Go left when you exit the door, about 500 meters down the alley. There’s a public restroom there.”

Grandma Gu nodded and thanked him, then hurried over to her granddaughter: “Xiaohan, granny’s going out to the restroom.”

Without waiting for Gu Yihan’s reply, she rushed out of the studio.

Meanwhile, Qin Shou carefully supported the heavily pregnant Gu Meng as they walked, complaining: “Snow cream is all the same. You could get it at the supply store at home. Why bother buying it now? You insist on going through all this trouble while pregnant. Does city snow cream really taste better than the supply store’s?”

He was nearly furious. Gu Meng, being in the late stage of pregnancy and swollen all over, couldn’t work. Their family was tight on money, yet she insisted on wasting it on non-essential items.

Just as Grandma Gu finished at the restroom and exited the alley, she ran into Gu Meng and Qin Shou, who were heading home.

Seeing that they hadn’t noticed her, she immediately lowered her head to pretend she didn’t see them.

She quickly walked past them, but Qin Shou suddenly looked up and saw Grandma Gu about two meters away.

“Grandma! What are you doing here?” he exclaimed in surprise.

Gu Meng looked up and saw Grandma Gu walking faster ahead. She immediately shouted, “Grandma! Doesn’t your granddaughter get your favor?”

Grabbing Qin Shou’s arm, she chased after Grandma Gu.

Even though her belly hurt slightly from the run, she didn’t stop.

Grandma Gu saw the studio ahead, and with Gu Meng closing in, she had no choice but to stop.

Gu Meng didn’t give Grandma Gu a chance to speak and sharply said, “Grandma, the last time I had the army wives bring words to you, did you just ignore them?”

Grandma Gu thought of Gu Meng using Gu Yihan to threaten her and felt her anger surge.

She glared fiercely at Gu Meng and yelled, “Gu Meng, when did you become so malicious?”

Gu Meng sneered at Grandma Gu, her tone cold and emotionless: “Grandma, I’ve always been like this. Didn’t you always know? It’s a family trait. Or maybe because you’ve been living the good life with Gu Yihan, you forgot I’m your own granddaughter, your son’s real daughter?”

Grandma Gu trembled with rage at Gu Meng’s complete disregard for her.

Pointing at her, she shouted, “Gu Meng, is this how you treat your elders?”

Gu Meng glanced at Grandma Gu disdainfully and casually said, “Elders? You deserve that title?”

Then she threatened: “Tell me, what would happen if I reported that my father was unfilial and neglected his parents? Or if I had him report that Gu Yihan took in vagrants illegally—would she be jailed or detained? Is that what you want?”

Seeing Grandma Gu hadn’t realized the severity, Gu Meng smiled coldly and explained, “Grandma, since you can’t read, you probably don’t know. Anyone who takes in vagrants without proper papers for more than three days gets fifteen days detention plus a fine!”

“If I report it through my father, how long would your beloved granddaughter be detained because of you? After all, she’s been taking care of you for years!”

Hearing this, Grandma Gu, thinking Gu Meng might actually harm Gu Yihan, felt her legs go weak, a massive, indescribable panic sweeping over her.

Seeing how terrified Grandma Gu was, Gu Meng sneered and said coldly, “I suggest you come serve me tomorrow. Otherwise, I won’t be comfortable, and neither will you.”

She didn’t even look at Grandma Gu, grabbed the dazed Qin Shou, and said, “Let’s go.”

Walking away, she sneered: “See? That’s the outcome of trying to have it both ways.”

Qin Shou, as if meeting Gu Meng for the first time, cautiously asked, “Will Grandma Gu really come to our house tomorrow?”
