Secretary Jiang was completely preoccupied, thinking of ways to get the textile factory to revoke his dismissal notice.
He couldn’t care less about what Zeng Xiao said, or whether she was hurt.
Zeng Xiao looked at the silent Secretary Jiang, disappointment flashing in her eyes.
Then she smiled to comfort him: “This won’t work with Officer Gu. Let’s go home and have my dad figure something out.”
Secretary Jiang glanced at Zeng Xiao and nodded. As he walked, he said, “Your dad won’t help us.”
He knew Zeng’s father too well. Over this whole thing with him being fired from the textile factory for forging a complaint letter, he had quietly mocked him behind his back plenty of times.
There was no way he would help him.
Walking side by side with her, Zeng Xiao turned her head slightly and, unable to hold it in, asked, “What did you do to make my dad dislike you so much? When we first got our marriage certificate, he was so attentive toward you, always thinking about how to get you the best position in the Industrial Department,” Secretary Jiang said irritably, scratching his head. He had no idea why it had come to this.
Seeing him answer vaguely, Zeng Xiao changed the subject.
“Then why did you forge the complaint letter?”
She still couldn’t understand why Secretary Jiang would do such a thing—after all, Gu Yihan had no conflicts of interest with him.
Hearing this, Secretary Jiang paused for a moment, then made up an answer: “I did it for you. Officer Gu bought the radio you liked in advance. I wanted to surprise you on our wedding day, so I pleaded humbly with her to let me have it first. And then she…”
Secretary Jiang deliberately put on a look of holding back his words.
Zeng Xiao’s mind immediately jumped to conclusions, thinking Gu Yihan must have humiliated him verbally or made him promise something he couldn’t deliver.
He must have been so angry that he wanted to teach her a lesson.
Thinking this, Zeng Xiao’s cheeks and ears quietly flushed.
Secretary Jiang had silently endured so much just to surprise her, even losing his job at the textile factory.
A hidden sweetness stirred in her heart—after all, no one would pay such a high price just to give her a surprise.
Seeing that Zeng Xiao didn’t continue pressing him, Secretary Jiang exhaled in relief.
When the corner of his eye caught sight of the high-end gifts she was carrying, disappointment flashed in his gaze.
If only Gu Yihan had let them in.
Then he could have sent her off for re-education through labor. In these special times, receiving even two bottles of alcohol could lead to a sentence, let alone so many luxury gifts.
It would have been enough to put her in the farm for five or six years.
Meanwhile, at the Lu Family’s house:
Grandma Gu didn’t even glance at Gu Yihan, turning angrily toward the living room, ignoring even the dearly loved Haohai.
Gu Yihan looked at the bewildered little Haohai with envy.
She walked into the living room and saw Grandma Gu sulking on the sofa. She knew her grandmother was worried that she had been wronged but hadn’t said anything.
After placing Haohai in his wooden baby chair, she instructed him: “Haohai, be good! Mommy’s going to go comfort our family’s Grand Supreme One.”
Haohai grinned and pointed at Grandma Gu with his chubby little hand, calling in his baby voice: “Mommy, comfort!”
Seeing his cute little expression, Gu Yihan’s heart melted, and she kissed his cheek.
Grandma Gu glared at her little granddaughter interacting with Haohai, twisted in anger, and turned away.
Gu Yihan deliberately tiptoed to the sofa and sat down next to her grandmother.
She took Grandma Gu’s hand and softly said, “Grandma, I’m sorry. Your granddaughter made you sad.”
Grandma Gu looked up at her granddaughter.
Her nose tingled, and tears of grievance immediately welled up.
With a choked voice, she said, “Do you and Xiao Lu think I’m too old and useless?”
Seeing her grandmother cry, Gu Yihan panicked, wondering how to comfort her, and suddenly heard her question.
Shaking her head vigorously like a rattle, she said, “Grandma, how could you think that?”
Grandma Gu withdrew her hand, interrupting her granddaughter, wiping her tears while asking sharply: “Then why didn’t you tell me you were bullied, when Xiao Lu already knew?”
Gu Yihan’s heart tightened, fearing her grandmother would misunderstand.
She hurriedly explained: “Grandma, I didn’t want you to worry. You already spend the whole day at home taking care of Haohai, cooking, and managing the house—it’s exhausting enough.”
By heaven, she truly meant it. Anyone who hasn’t taken care of a child wouldn’t know—it leaves no free time at all.
Hearing this, Grandma Gu suddenly stood up, pointing at her granddaughter’s forehead and poking it hard.
Gu Yihan cooperated, tapping her own head in response.
Seeing this, Grandma Gu got angrier, thinking her granddaughter was brushing her off. Gritting her teeth, she said loudly: “When you were little and bullied by Zhang Cuihua, you always came to me to complain. Now that you’re grown, you start bottling up your grievances! Are you going backward as you grow up?”
She rambled on for twenty minutes straight.
Gu Yihan nodded along, letting her grandmother vent.
Anger must be released; holding it in is bad for the body.
She even made a pitiful face as if being scolded, giving her grandmother emotional satisfaction.
Seeing her granddaughter’s wronged expression under scolding, Grandma Gu softened again, sitting down on the sofa.
Still a bit exasperated, she said: “Xiaohan, next time, if something happens, make sure you tell Grandma. I may not have other skills, but I’m never afraid to argue or scold.”
Gu Yihan nodded, her big eyes wide, and made a playful gesture like pinching a chick:
“Alright, next time let you pinch anyone who bullies your granddaughter like little chicks.”
“Pfft.”
Seeing her granddaughter act silly, Grandma Gu couldn’t help but laugh.
Gu Yihan smiled at her, linking her arm around hers and resting her head on Grandma Gu’s shoulder.
Softly, she said: “Grandma, don’t be mad. Your granddaughter knows she was wrong. Next time, I’ll tell you everything.”
Before Grandma Gu could reply, Haohai, sitting in his wooden chair, couldn’t take it anymore.
“Pat, pat, pat.”
He anxiously patted the wooden board in front of his chair, his round eyes looking at Gu Yihan as he spread his arms.
In a childish voice, he cried: “Mommy, pick me up!”
Gu Yihan and Grandma Gu exchanged a glance, realizing Haohai had stayed in the small chair long enough.
She stood, smiling, and walked over to pick him up: “Come on, let’s take photos with Haohai!”
Then she carried Haohai back to the bedroom to pack a few change-of-clothes.
Grandma Gu, hearing this, hurriedly stood and tidied her clothes.
Following behind Gu Yihan, she quietly asked: “Is it alright if it’s just the three of us?”
She still worried that Lu Huailin would be upset later, as taking the child’s first-year photos was a big deal, and they hadn’t consulted him.
Gu Yihan waved it off: “Grandma, don’t worry. I already told Lu Huailin in advance!”
Glancing at her wrist, it was not even 10 o’clock.
She smiled: “Lu Huailin already requested a car from the unit. Xiao He will pick us up at 10 to take us to the city.”
Grandma Gu’s anxiety eased.
Then realizing Haohai was already one year old, she immediately thought about going to Gu Meng’s house to help her with childbirth—something she hadn’t told her granddaughter yet.
