“Don’t worry! Right now, Grandma Gu cares most about Gu Yihan.”
“She won’t dare to gamble.”
Hearing this, Qin Shou gave a thumbs-up to Gu Meng. “Wife, you’re really impressive.”
Gu Meng glanced at the grinning Qin Shou, a cold smile flickering in her eyes.
Back when Grandma Gu came to Kun City, she had tricked the battalion commander, Gu Baoqing, into giving her a letter of introduction.
There was no way the commander would keep sending her letters indefinitely.
Photography Studio
Gu Yihan glanced at her wristwatch and noticed that Grandma Gu had been in the restroom for half an hour.
Feeling a bit worried, she looked at Haohao, who was playing with Song Zhi’s son, and called to He Shengli, who was standing at the door: “Xiao He, can you watch Haohao for a bit?”
He Shengli nodded with a smile and went over to sit beside Haohao.
Song Zhi watched Gu Yihan’s back, unable to hide her envy. Director Lu really treated her well—taking her out for photos and even assigning a bodyguard to stay close.
Gu Yihan stepped out of the studio and saw Grandma Gu standing nearby, lost in thought.
She immediately went to her side, grabbed her arm, and asked anxiously, “Grandma, what’s wrong?”
Hearing her granddaughter’s voice, Grandma Gu snapped back to awareness and met her worried gaze.
Recalling Gu Meng’s words, fear crept in—she couldn’t put her granddaughter in danger.
To hide her unease, she quickly wiped the corner of her eye and composed herself.
She gave her granddaughter a faint smile and casually said, “It’s nothing, just missing those gossipy old ladies back in Gujia Village.”
Gu Yihan thought Grandma Gu was homesick and smiled. “Grandma, if you want to visit the village, your granddaughter will buy the tickets and accompany you right away.”
Grandma Gu looked at her granddaughter with mixed emotions. As long as she was well, a little personal sacrifice was nothing.
She reached out to pat her head: “We won’t go back. Xiaohan, you’ve finally gotten out of the village—don’t ever go back in this life.”
“All right.” Gu Yihan nodded with a smile.
Grandma Gu forced a smile, took her granddaughter’s hand, and said lightly, “Let’s go home.”
Gu Yihan didn’t know what had just happened.
She felt as if Grandma Gu’s spirit had suddenly dimmed and noticed a trace of worry flash across her eyes.
At the Family Compound, After getting out of the car, Gu Yihan looked up and saw Master Chu and Leng Xiao standing at the entrance of the small courtyard.
She paused for a moment, then remembered she had forgotten about the little hamster.
She bent down, picking up the sleeping Haohao, and walked toward the courtyard gate while feigning ignorance: “Master Chu, what brings you here?”
Master Chu looked at her kindly and smiled. “Comrade Gu, have you forgotten something?”
Grandma Gu held Haohao’s clothes, greeted Xiao He, and took the keys from her pocket.
“Xiaohan, first take Haohao into the bedroom.”
Gu Yihan nodded.
Grandma Gu invited Master Chu and Leng Xiao inside.
After coming out of the bedroom, Gu Yihan looked at Master Chu and Leng Xiao sitting on the sofa. “Master Chu, I’m afraid I’ll disappoint you. The little hamster can’t come back for now.”
“You’ll have to wait ten days.”
After this, Gu Yihan knew that leaving the space for too long destabilized the hamster’s spirit—it needed to return regularly to rest and recharge.
Master Chu’s face lit up with joy—how could he be disappointed?
Gu Yihan knew the exact date the hamster would return, which meant she could communicate with it.
“Comrade Gu Yihan, don’t worry, your reward is assured.”
He then slapped Leng Xiao’s leg hard and said in a deep voice, “What are you standing there for? Hurry up and bring the documents.”
“Ouch.” Leng Xiao rubbed his leg, now definitely red, and looked at Master Chu, daring not to speak.
He quickly pulled two property certificates from his briefcase.
Master Chu took them and handed them to Gu Yihan with a smile. “Xiaohan, I heard your husband is from the capital city. I thought it over and applied for a courtyard house for you there. This way, you’ll have a place to stay when visiting the capital for the New Year.”
Gu Yihan’s eyes lit up like a hundred-watt bulb.
She reached out to take them, noting her name on the two certificates for a two-entry, four-courtyard house. On the surface, she remained calm, but inside she was ecstatic.
“Master Chu, thank you. I really like this reward.”
Gu Yihan looked at Master Chu and sincerely thanked him.
Master Chu exhaled in relief—pleased that she liked it.
Gu Yihan’s family of four sat around the dining table for dinner.
She looked at the tofu balls and tomato scrambled eggs, picking up some tomatoes and eggs.
The sour taste of the tomato nearly made her gag—no sugar, no salt, the flavor was unbearably tart.
She immediately spat it out, twisting her face and gritting her teeth. “Grandma, did you forget the salt and sugar in the tomato eggs?”
Grandma Gu looked at her blankly and replied evasively, “The tofu balls aren’t salty.”
Lu Huailin quickly handed his wife the water cup. “Wife, drink some water.”
Gu Yihan gulped down several large sips, and the sour taste gradually disappeared.
She noticed Grandma Gu was distracted and felt puzzled.
Seeing this, Lu Huailin tugged on her sleeve and whispered in her ear: “Wife, I’ll take Haohao out for a bit later. Ask Grandma if something’s bothering her.”
Gu Yihan softly responded with a nod.
After dinner, Lu Huailin efficiently cleaned the table and tidied up.
He picked up Haohao and left the living room, giving Gu Yihan a flirtatious wink before heading out.
“Pft.” Gu Yihan couldn’t help laughing, thinking of Grandma Gu, lost in thought on the sofa.
She went to sit beside her and quietly asked, “Grandma, is something bothering you?”
Grandma Gu looked at her granddaughter, opened her mouth, and, recalling Gu Meng’s threat, steeled herself and said, “Xiaohan, tomorrow I’ll go to Gu Meng’s house to help her during her confinement.”
Gu Yihan’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Grandma, what did you just say?”
She thought her ears were playing tricks on her.
“Gu Meng is about to give birth, and I can’t leave her alone. I’ll stay and help her for a few months,” Grandma Gu said, looking seriously at her granddaughter.
“Grandma, are you joking with me?”
Gu Yihan forced a smile, trying to calm herself, and asked lightly.
Grandma Gu shook her head. “Xiaohan, Gu Meng has no mother-in-law. When she has a child, it’s only right that I help her for a few months.”
Gu Yihan’s anger flared uncontrollably.
She suddenly stood up and stormed toward the bedroom, leaving behind, “Grandma, I understand.”
