July 5th
Today was Haohau’s first birthday. Gu Yihan planned to take Grandma Gu and Haohau to a photo studio in the city to take commemorative pictures.
After finishing her morning routine, she picked out a set of faux military uniform from the wardrobe, put on the outfit, braided her hair into two plaits, tidied her side bangs, and walked out of the bedroom with a smile.
“Grandma, how do I look in this outfit?” Gu Yihan twirled in place with her arms open and asked Grandma Gu.
Grandma Gu was serving breakfast at the table. Hearing her granddaughter’s question, she looked up and smiled warmly.
“Beautiful. My granddaughter looks good in anything.”
Gu Yihan laughed and walked over to Grandma Gu, giving Haohau, who was sitting in his high chair, a kiss.
Looking up at her, Haohau smiled and said, “Grandma, you’re the best at coaxing people.”
Grandma Gu rolled her eyes at her granddaughter but said nothing, teasingly: “This outfit is ugly, the person is ugly… never seen such an ugly daughter-in-law before.”
“Ugly,” Haohau mimicked in his soft baby voice, copying Grandma Gu.
Gu Yihan couldn’t help but giggle, glancing at Haohau, who was busy eating his rice porridge.
“I’m ugly Mommy, and you’re ugly Haohau.”
Haohau’s mouth was stuffed with porridge, and he couldn’t argue—he could only stare anxiously.
Gu Yihan looked at Grandma Gu and said with a smile, “Grandma, if you say the outfit is ugly, your granddaughter believes you.”
If anyone else said she was ugly, it would just be jealousy. But if Grandma Gu teased her, it was all in good fun.
Grandma Gu rolled her eyes at her granddaughter again, signaling her to hurry and finish breakfast.
After the three of them finished breakfast cheerfully, Gu Yihan looked at Haohau while Grandma Gu went back to the bedroom to change.
“Knock, knock, knock.”
Gu Yihan heard a knock at the door.
She quickly picked up Haohau and walked over. When she opened the door, she was momentarily taken aback to see Secretary Jiang standing there.
Her brows furrowed immediately, and she looked at him with suspicion.
“Secretary Jiang, who authorized you to enter the military residential compound?” she asked coldly.
No stranger could casually enter the military residential compound. For him to find her house so precisely, she wouldn’t believe it unless someone guided him.
Seeing Gu Yihan’s unfriendly attitude, Secretary Jiang didn’t answer her question.
Instead, he smiled gently and said, “Officer Gu, I came today hoping to discuss something with you.”
Seeing him intentionally smile in a harmless, innocent way, Gu Yihan’s internal alarm bells rang.
She ignored him and turned her attention to Zeng Xiao, who was standing beside him.
She was holding a bunch of high-end gifts, clearly expensive items from the Friendship Store.
Were they planning to trap her?
Gu Yihan immediately spoke up to refuse: “I don’t think there’s anything between us that needs to be discussed privately.”
She shifted Haohau in her arms and said coldly, “If it’s work-related, you shouldn’t come to my home.”
Secretary Jiang’s smile stiffened, and a flicker of displeasure appeared in his eyes. He said patiently, “Officer Gu, could you let us come inside and talk?”
Gu Yihan gave him a sidelong glance. This guy wanted to come inside without giving a reason—what was he thinking?
“Secretary Jiang, if you have something to say, wait until I’m at work,” she replied.
Without giving him a chance to respond, she raised her hand and closed the door.
“Ah—”
Zeng Xiao suddenly reached out, grabbing the doorframe, and her fingers got caught as Gu Yihan shut the door.
Hearing her cry out, Gu Yihan instinctively paused.
“Officer Gu, we came today to apologize to you!” Zeng Xiao said anxiously, ignoring the pain in her hand.
She was almost infuriated by Secretary Jiang; at a time like this, he was still so concerned with saving face—didn’t he realize they could apologize right at the door? Why did they have to enter Gu Yihan’s home?
“Apologize?”
Grandma Gu had changed her clothes and, seeing her granddaughter talking to two strangers while holding Haohau, worried that she would tire herself out.
She rushed to the door, only to hear the woman’s words.
Thinking her granddaughter was being bullied, she immediately jumped up and pointed at Secretary Jiang and Zeng Xiao.
“Why are you two apologizing to my granddaughter? What have you done to wrong her?”
Intimidated by Grandma Gu’s fierce demeanor, Zeng Xiao kept stepping back. Having grown up in a privileged household, she had never seen such an imposing display.
She hurriedly shook her head, waving her hands: “It… wasn’t me, it was my husband.”
Seeing Zeng Xiao flustered and unable to speak properly, Secretary Jiang stepped in front of her and looked at Grandma Gu.
“I’m sorry. I acted rashly and did something that hurt Officer Gu,” he explained.
“But thankfully, it didn’t cause her any real harm.”
He then turned his gaze to Gu Yihan, who was holding the child: “Officer Gu, can you let this slide in the spirit of friendship and forgive my wife?”
Since he couldn’t enter the house, he at least wanted to get past the “being fired from the textile factory” issue.
“I promise I will never do anything against you again,” Secretary Jiang said.
Before Gu Yihan could respond, Grandma Gu’s gaze swept around the doorway. She spotted a tree branch and, without hesitation, bent down to pick it up.
Suddenly, she swung it toward Secretary Jiang: “You shameless person! How dare you bully my precious one?”
Secretary Jiang froze, having never encountered someone resorting to violence at the drop of a hat.
After getting hit twice, he immediately pulled the stunned Zeng Xiao behind him and dodged left and right.
Gu Yihan placed Haohau on the ground and instructed, “Haohau, stay still.”
Haohau blinked his big eyes, curiously watching Grandma Gu chase Secretary Jiang.
Gu Yihan jogged over to Grandma Gu and stopped her: “Grandma, don’t tire yourself out—it’s not worth it.”
Then she turned to the now-angered Secretary Jiang.
“Secretary Jiang, only you know if you truly want to apologize or if it’s for some other reason. As for your so-called apology, I don’t accept it, nor will I forgive you. You must face the consequences you deserve.”
“Officer Gu, you—”
Gu Yihan interrupted him with a cold snort: “Just like you, you do something to harm others, lightly say ‘sorry,’ and think that’s enough. Why even bother with the authorities?”
She took Grandma Gu’s hand and walked straight back into the courtyard, slamming the door shut.
Zeng Xiao saw Secretary Jiang standing there, disheveled and pale, staring blankly at the closed door.
She felt sorry for him—such a proud man had personally come to apologize, only to be turned away.
She also felt bad for herself—her hand had been hurt trying to stop Gu Yihan from closing the door, and Secretary Jiang hadn’t even cared.
Thinking for a moment, she placed the high-end gifts on the ground and walked over to him.
She deliberately extended her injured hand to straighten his clothes, muttering, “This family is so rude—how could they act without asking first?”
