“I’m getting married!”
Hearing Hu Shan’s excited voice, Gu Yihan looked up toward the door.
She saw Hu Shan dressed in a red plaid top and army-green pants, wearing little high-heeled shoes, looking energetic and lively.
“Your outfit looks really nice,” Sister Min said, smiling at Hu Shan.
Hu Shan proudly circled the office, laughing as she said, “This proves my husband has good taste.”
In fact, she had many beautiful clothes at home. It was mainly about Cheng Bo’s attitude—no matter if the choice wasn’t perfect, he had to give it.
“Oh… your man does have taste!” Sister Min exclaimed, eyes wide in mock admiration.
“Of course!”
Gu Yihan couldn’t help but laugh at Hu Shan’s response.
The two of them—one daring to show off, the other daring to praise—filled the room with cheerful energy.
Hu Shan blinked at Gu Yihan, looking a little aggrieved: “Xiaohan, am I not pretty?”
“Pretty. You even made Cheng Bo’s eyes go blind with your beauty,” Gu Yihan said, laughing.
Hearing what she wanted, Hu Shan lifted her chin and walked back to her seat with a light step.
She took her marriage certificate from her bag and waved it at Gu Yihan and Sister Min.
“We got the certificate at noon today. It’s still fresh!”
Gu Yihan and Sister Min exchanged smiles and said in unison, “Congratulations!”
“Thank you!” Hu Shan said, carefully putting the certificate away.
Su Yonghong looked at Hu Shan’s happy gestures and couldn’t feel any joy.
Her family’s nephew was dating someone and was expecting a “three rounds and one ring” betrothal.
Her elder brother’s family didn’t have that kind of money, and her mother actually expected her to manage it.
Now, Su Yonghong spent sleepless nights worrying. The Old Su family only had this one precious child; there was no way he could end up without a proper wife.
“Xiao Hu, how much did your in-laws give as a betrothal gift?”
Hearing Su Yonghong’s question, Hu Shan frowned slightly and replied casually, “Three rounds and one ring, 888 yuan.”
“Ah?” Su Yonghong exclaimed sharply, thinking she must have misheard. “Hu Shan, how much did you just say?”
Seeing Hu Shan remain silent with a cold expression, Sister Min answered for her: “Three rounds and one ring, 888 yuan.”
Su Yonghong’s face went pale and then red, relieved that she hadn’t introduced Hu Shan to her nephew in the first place.
A daughter-in-law like this—her family could never accept it.
She shot a sidelong glance at Hu Shan and sneered sarcastically, “Young people these days really have no idea how much they’re worth.”
Hu Shan was furious. She had been in a great mood all day because of her wedding, and why did Su Yonghong always have to pick on her?
Gu Yihan glanced at her and said expressionlessly, “Sister Su, why are you so worked up?”
“Jealousy!” Sister Min chimed in.
She wasn’t afraid of Su Yonghong; the whole family were a bunch of bitter wolves.
Back when Zhang Xia had her accident, she had rushed about helping the poor girl, only to hear returning sent-down youth speak of Zhang Xia with contempt.
They said that poor girl had done it on purpose to avoid rural labor, just to get a chance to return to the city, even at the cost of her own reputation.
If one could be so harsh to herself, what about others?
Su Yonghong saw the expressions of the three women and realized her earlier words had annoyed them.
Hu Shan, seeing Gu Yihan and Sister Min defending her, smiled slightly at them.
Then she took some White Rabbit milk candies from her bag in the drawer and walked over to the two, giving each nine pieces.
“These are my wedding candies. Take some of the happiness,” she said with a smile.
Sister Min happily accepted the candies, praising her: “May you and Cheng Bo be as sweet as these White Rabbit candies.”
Gu Yihan chuckled: “Wishing you a long and happy marriage.”
Hu Shan smiled warmly: “Thank you for your blessings.”
Su Yonghong, seeing Hu Shan give out candies but deliberately leaving her out, angrily said, “You’re all ganging up on me!”
Hu Shan glared at her and said coldly, “These are my things; I give them to whoever I want. Don’t like it? Suck it up.”
Su Yonghong was nearly infuriated into a faint and spent the whole afternoon in the office slamming and throwing things in anger.
At the Weekend, Gu Yihan carried more than twenty eggs and an old hen into the living room.
She called out to Grandma Gu, who was watching over the little ones in the yard: “Grandma, since Huihao is here, I’ll go to Zhao Ju’s house for a visit.”
Grandma Gu waved her hand: “Go ahead.”
Downstairs in the residential building, “Sister-in-law, why are you here?”
Liu Aihua looked at Gu Yihan in surprise.
Gu Yihan smiled slightly at her and didn’t hide anything: “I came to see Zhao Ju.”
Li Duo, following behind Liu Aihua, pouted. She was also a company commander under Lu Huailin—why was Gu Yihan treated differently?
Seeing what Gu Yihan was carrying, Liu Aihua’s face stiffened slightly.
Gu Yihan didn’t care about her expression and said with a smile, “You guys chat, I’ll go first.”
“See? She doesn’t even care about you,” Li Duo tried to sow discord.
Liu Aihua snorted. Did she really think she was a fool?
She glared at Li Duo: “Even if Sister-in-law doesn’t care about me, what does that have to do with you?”
With that, she picked up a small stool and walked straight past her.
At this hour, quite a few army wives were chatting at the entrances of the tube-style apartments. Gu Yihan smiled and greeted the company commander’s wife she recognized.
Inside the house, Zhao Ju seemed to hear a familiar voice, quickly stood up, opened the door, and just happened to see Gu Yihan knocking.
“Xiaohan. It really is you.”
Gu Yihan walked in, reminding her as she went: “Why aren’t you resting in bed?”
Zhao Ju sat on the sofa, gloomily: “Xiaohan, I might not be able to work anymore.”
Company Commander Shi walked out of the kitchen holding a bowl of soup, smiling when he saw Gu Yihan: “Sister-in-law’s here.”
Gu Yihan smiled and nodded, placing the items she carried on the table.
Turning to Zhao Ju on the sofa, she asked worriedly: “Sister Ju, you had twins. You need to take a full forty-five days of confinement.”
“That’s right, wife. You have to listen to what she says,” Shi Jianguo added anxiously. But Zhao Ju didn’t listen.
Seeing Zhao Ju lower her head and stay silent, Gu Yihan went over to her: “What’s going on?”
Shi Jianguo said cautiously: “Wife, it’s fine if you don’t work. I can support you.”
Zhao Ju cried out in despair: “It’s not that easy! When the babies cry, you cry with them; when they’re hungry, you’re hungry; you can’t even feed them fast enough.”
Seeing Zhao Ju’s emotions start to waver again, Shi Jianguo didn’t dare to speak further.
“Do you want to work, Sister Ju?”
Hearing Gu Yihan’s question, Zhao Ju stammered: “During the confinement, I hired the company commander’s wife to help.”
“But once the confinement is over, I’ll have to handle two children alone. I won’t be able to manage.”
“Sister-in-law, nobody at my house can help with the kids, so my Wife’s work might need to be transferred elsewhere.”
Shi Jianguo looked at Zhao Ju cautiously, afraid that any word would upset her again.
Gu Yihan looked at Zhao Ju, who was still hanging her head, puzzled: “Why sell the position? Why not just find someone to cover for you?”
Hearing this, Zhao Ju lifted her head and looked at Gu Yihan: “Cover for me?”
Gu Yihan nodded: “Yes! Give the substitute half your salary, and the remaining half can hire the company commander’s wife to help you with the kids.”
Zhao Ju’s eyes instantly lit up. She hugged Gu Yihan tightly and laughed out loud: “Xiaohan, thank you! Why didn’t I think of that?”
