Gu Yihan walked out of Zhao Ju’s house, feeling a wave of melancholy.
Luckily, she had only one child—otherwise, she really wouldn’t be able to manage.
When two little ones cried at the same time, they really went all out, their wails competing to see whose voice was louder.
“Heavens, what kind of sin have I committed? I fed her well, raised her, and now that she’s getting married, she wants to cut off all ties with her family!”
Hearing the cursing ahead, Gu Yihan noticed something—it sounded so much like Su Yonghong.
She ran a few steps.
At the entrance to her small courtyard, a crowd had gathered to watch the commotion.
Auntie Chen was watching the scene, and when she saw Gu Yihan in the crowd, she waved her hands energetically.
Gu Yihan walked along the wall to her side, looking toward the source of the voice.
Sure enough, it really was Su Yonghong, sitting at the doorstep of Vice Battalion Commander Wang’s house, slapping her thighs and wailing.
Gu Yihan looked at Auntie Chen in puzzlement. “What’s going on here?”
Auntie Chen, munching on sunflower seeds, sighed, “Poor little Zhang Xia. She doesn’t have a job, she’s forced to go to the countryside, and her family favors boys over girls.”
“Yes, this isn’t a family—it’s a living hell! They’re basically trying to take Zhang Xia’s life,” Li Xia added.
Vice Battalion Commander Wang’s mother stood with hands on her hips and yelled, “What nonsense! Who would acknowledge a family like yours?”
Su Yonghong, feeling righteous, replied, “I raised her for almost twenty years! How can marrying your family mean she has to sever ties with her own? Believe it or not, I’ll report you to the Revolutionary Committee for making Zhang Xia unfilial.”
“Ha! Go ahead and report me. I want to see if your committee dares to come to the military housing!” Vice Battalion Commander Wang stomped his feet and shouted angrily.
Zhang Xia, with her protruding belly, cautiously approached Vice Battalion Commander Wang’s mother and softly tried to calm her: “Mother, don’t upset yourself.”
Then she turned to Su Yonghong, shrinking her neck, and weakly said, “Mother, are you trying to drive your daughter to death?”
Su Yonghong trembled with anger at Zhang Xia’s words. “I raised you this big! How can you be so selfish? Ignoring the lives of your parents!”
Seeing that Su Yonghong was determined to cling to her son and leech off him, Vice Battalion Commander Wang’s mother quickly approached and, while Su Yonghong wasn’t paying attention, slapped her.
Su Yonghong froze for a moment, then grabbed Wang’s mother’s arm and slapped back.
Gu Yihan watched, completely confused, as the two women started fighting.
She quietly asked someone nearby, “What are they fighting about?”
Li Xia glanced at Gu Yihan and laughed, “Zhang Xia’s mother wants to borrow 800 yuan from her, without even a written IOU.”
Gu Yihan: “……”
Was Su Yonghong out of her mind?
Zhang Xia had no job. How could she possibly have that kind of money? Obviously, she wanted Vice Battalion Commander Wang’s family to pay!
The watching army wives quickly pulled Wang’s mother and Su Yonghong apart—no matter what, they couldn’t let a soldier’s family suffer in front of them.
Su Yonghong, being pulled apart, grabbed Zhang Xia and questioned, “Do you want your mother’s family or your husband’s?”
Zhang Xia staggered from the pull, clutching her pale face and stomach.
Tears welled up in her eyes, her body swaying like a delicate little white flower.
It was as if she used all her strength to scream at her mother: “Can’t you stop forcing me?”
After the scream, her eyes rolled, and her body went limp, collapsing onto Su Yonghong.
Vice Battalion Commander Wang’s mother was shocked and immediately called a few familiar army wives to carry Zhang Xia back.
Before leaving, she turned to Su Yonghong and shouted, “You wait! If anything happens to my grandson, I won’t forgive you!”
Then she anxiously ran home, worried that her long-awaited eldest grandson might be gone.
Gu Yihan, stunned by the scene, muttered, “Can someone even control the direction they fall when they faint?”
The crowd, seeing no more drama, glanced at Su Yonghong standing there in a daze, and gradually dispersed.
Once Su Yonghong regained her composure, she saw Gu Yihan not far away, scowled, glared at her, and with trembling arms, turned to leave.
The next day.
Gu Yihan held her child, feeding him while eating breakfast.
Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through her chest, and tears nearly fell from the pain.
Looking down, she saw the little one had bitten her and was giggling.
Grandma Gu noticed her granddaughter’s reddened eyes and worried, “What’s wrong? Are you uncomfortable?”
Hearing this, Gu Yihan couldn’t hold back her tears, feeling wronged: “Grandma, he must have bitten me.”
Grandma Gu quickly picked up Lu Chenhao and carefully examined his gums, noticing small bumps.
She laughed at her granddaughter, “It’s nothing. Haohao is starting to grow his teeth. He’s just biting because he’s teething!”
Gu Yihan, still in pain, shuddered, “Grandma, is there any way to stop him from biting while nursing?”
Grandma Gu shook her head with a smile: “It’s fine. In a few days, once Haohao’s baby teeth come in, he won’t bite anymore.”
Gu Yihan looked at Grandma Gu suspiciously, feeling she was trying to trick her.
If it already hurt this much without teeth, what would it be like when the little teeth finally emerged…?
No, Gu Yihan shook her head. In another month, the baby would be six months old. She’d wean him then.
At the textile factory.
When Gu Yihan stepped into the office, only Sister Min and Hu Shan were there. She noticed Su Yonghong’s empty desk and asked in puzzlement, “Sister Su on leave?”
Sister Min, enjoying the news, said, “I heard she broke her arm. A serious injury like that takes a hundred days to heal. She probably won’t be back for a while.”
Gu Yihan thought of yesterday when Zhang Xia fainted onto Su Yonghong—didn’t she instinctively support her? Could her arm have broken from the impact?
So fragile?
Hu Shan’s eyes lit up upon hearing Sister Min. Excitedly, she said, “That’s wonderful news.”
Looking up, Hu Shan saw both Sister Min and Gu Yihan watching her, feeling embarrassed: “Sister Su always seems to target me, I don’t know why.”
Sister Min snickered: “She wasn’t like this before. Maybe she’s getting older and more forgetful.”
Gu Yihan thought, could it be menopause?
Su Yonghong was almost forty—not quite the age for menopause. Could it have come early?
With one oppressive presence gone, the office atmosphere felt much more harmonious.
Little did Gu Yihan know that the Lu family in Beijing had started causing trouble again.
