After leaving the state-run restaurant, Grandma Gu rubbed her full stomach.
She murmured softly, “Xiaohan, if you ever want to eat something, Grandma will make it for you.”
Gu Yihan knew Grandma was worried about the money and smiled. “Grandma, can you just say it was delicious?”
Grandma Gu glanced at her granddaughter. Could it not be delicious?
After all, the dishes were made by chefs at a state-run restaurant—how could a country bumpkin like her compare?
Gu Yihan felt a bit tired and switched arms to hold the little one.
Grandma Gu frowned. “Why hasn’t Xiao Lu come yet?”
The state-run restaurant didn’t allow parking for Jeeps, so Lu Huailin had parked nearby at the public security bureau.
Grandma Gu looked at Haohao in her granddaughter’s arms. The little boy’s big eyes were wide open, quietly observing everything around him.
She reached out and patted him. “Xiaohan, let Grandma hold Haohao for a bit.”
Gu Yihan quickly shook her head. The little one was over three months old, well-nourished, and weighed 17 jin.
After finally bringing Grandma out for a trip, she didn’t want to tire her.
After another ten minutes or so, Lu Huailin came running toward them.
“Does it really take that long to drive?”
Lu Huailin quickly took the child from his wife’s arms. “I ran into some people from the unit and chatted for a bit, got delayed.”
Then he said, “Wife, I need to tell you something.”
Gu Yihan looked at him with curiosity. “What is it?”
Lu Huailin held the child with one arm and took his wife’s hand with the other. “Commander Xu wants his wife to come back with us. I agreed.”
Gu Yihan nodded. They were from the same unit; since he had asked, it wasn’t polite to refuse.
Soon, they reached the parked car.
Seeing Song Zhi standing next to the Jeep holding a child, Gu Yihan was a bit surprised.
Song Zhi heard footsteps, turned, and saw Gu Yihan, smiling. “Xiaohan.”
“Oh-oh-oh…”
The little one in Lu Huailin’s arms started babbling at the child in Song Zhi’s arms.
But the child just glanced at him, then snuggled into Song Zhi’s shoulder.
Gu Yihan took her child from Lu Huailin’s arms and smiled. “Sister Song, your child is so adorable.”
Song Zhi was pleased. Her own child was still her favorite, even though Gu Yihan’s baby was lovely too.
After getting in the car, Gu Yihan wanted to sit in the front passenger seat, but her crying little one made her sit in the back with him alongside Song Zhi.
“Oh-oh…”
Gu Yihan laughed seeing her child chatting with Song Zhi’s baby.
“Your little one is really lively,” Song Zhi said, smiling.
Gu Yihan looked at her child affectionately and nodded.
She dared not boast about her own child—didn’t want to tempt fate.
Song Zhi patted her own obedient son and sighed. “Xiaohan, you’ve heard about my family situation, right?”
Gu Yihan looked up at her.
Song Zhi, seeing no response, continued, “My mother-in-law always wanted me to bring the girl we sent away back, saying our family would then have both a son and a daughter.”
Gu Yihan’s eyes widened. She’d encountered a real oddball—someone who liked raising a child that had harmed her own grandson in this era?
Song Zhi sneered. “Isn’t that ridiculous?”
Grandma Gu said, “Your mother-in-law… isn’t she afraid of raising an ungrateful child?”
She immediately regretted it.
Why was her mouth so quick? Her granddaughter wasn’t even related by blood, and she’d still care for her.
Gu Yihan didn’t think much—Song Zhi was just complaining about her own mother-in-law.
She wasn’t familiar with her; she had to be careful not to say anything rash.
After all, they were family.
“They swapped my child with theirs and still want me to raise hers? Only if I die,” Song Zhi said through gritted teeth.
While driving, Lu Huailin kept glancing at his wife.
She was smart—not one to air family matters in front of outsiders.
Family shame should not be shared publicly.
Grandma Gu, seeing Lu Huailin’s sidelong glance, felt a surge of anxiety!
She was afraid he might accidentally drive the big iron box into a ditch.
She instructed, “At home, watch however you like.”
Lu Huailin’s ears turned red.
Song Zhi, hearing Grandma Gu, couldn’t help laughing.
She teased, “Commander Lu seems to fancy you quite a bit.”
Gu Yihan glanced at Song Zhi and smiled. “Commander Xu fancies you too, otherwise, where would your sturdy little boy come from?”
Back home, Gu Yihan placed the sleeping little one on the bed. After washing up, she lay down, completely exhausted from the day.
Lu Huailin entered the bedroom and, seeing his wife asleep, carefully opened the wardrobe to organize their luggage.
Half-asleep, Gu Yihan heard the sound, opened her eyes, and saw Lu Huailin tidying up.
She sat up and softly asked, “Going on a mission?”
Lu Huailin came over and pulled her into his arms.
“Wife, this mission will take a while. You and our son wait at home for me.”
Gu Yihan hugged him back, worry etched on her face.
She had a bad feeling—the mission would be dangerous.
After a moment, she bit her lip, quickly got out of bed, and pretended to take a glass vial from the wardrobe, handing it to him.
“This is from Little Hamster before he left. It helps wounds heal faster—use it sparingly.”
Lu Huailin held the vial tightly, one arm around his wife, and kissed her deeply.
His deep voice sounded, “Wife, don’t worry.”
Then he picked up the packed luggage and left the bedroom.
Since Lu Huailin left, Gu Yihan had been listless for days.
Grandma Gu used whatever ingredients she had to make delicious meals for her daily.
Until that evening, after dinner, “Bang, bang, bang.”
The door of the courtyard was knocked forcefully. Grandma Gu put on a coat and opened it to find Zhao Ju’s husband.
“Grandma Gu, is sister-in-law resting?” Shi Jianguo asked anxiously.
“You’re here for something?” Grandma Gu asked, puzzled.
“My wife just gave birth, but her milk isn’t enough. I wanted to borrow some formula from sister-in-law.”
Shi Jianguo was furious. He never expected that after his wife gave birth to two daughters, her mother would come uninvited and take everything from the house while he wasn’t there.
Even the formula he prepared for the children was taken, leaving Zhao Ju frustrated.
The babies cried, hungry and without milk.
Hearing Shi Jianguo’s voice, Gu Yihan quickly got dressed, knowing something had gone wrong.
After hearing him, she went back to the bedroom, grabbed two cans of formula, and handed them to him.
Shi Jianguo accepted them gratefully, bowing to Gu Yihan and choking up. “Thank you, sister-in-law.”
Gu Yihan waved her hand. “Don’t say so much. Sister Ju must be anxious at home.”
Shi Jianguo nodded and hurried off.
Grandma Gu watched his retreating figure and closed the door.
She sighed, “How can a mother-in-law be so malicious?”
Gu Yihan smiled slightly. This world had all kinds of people.
