Fang Yi’s eyes flickered when she saw the box on the dressing table.
She reached out to grab it, but Gu Yihan’s reflexes were quicker—she snatched the box away before Fang Yi could.
Seeing this, Madam Lu stood up abruptly, stifling the impulse to scold.
She couldn’t let Fang Yi lose face in front of her younger daughter-in-law.
So she forced a smile and said to Gu Yihan, “Xiaohan, you must be hungry. Let’s go downstairs to eat.”
Gu Yihan pretended not to notice Madam Lu’s mood.
She didn’t even glance at Fang Yi standing to the side but instead placed the box back in the cabinet.
Turning to Madam Lu with a bright smile, she said, “Mom, now that you mention it, I do feel a little hungry.”
Madam Lu’s eyes held amusement. Compared to Gu Yihan, she increasingly looked down on this eldest daughter-in-law who lacked tact.
She then glared at Fang Yi, who was standing stiffly like a wooden post, and said, “Hurry up. Didn’t you say you were starving earlier?”
Fang Yi hadn’t seen what was inside the box, and her heart felt like it had been scratched by a cat.
She couldn’t shake the feeling that Madam Lu gave Gu Yihan more than she had received.
Seeing that Fang Yi didn’t react, Madam Lu simply pushed her out the door.
Then she pulled the key from her pocket and handed it to Gu Yihan. “This is the key to your bedroom. Keep it with you.”
“Mom, we’re all family. Why do we need to lock the door?”
Fang Yi muttered unhappily.
Gu Yihan took the key with a smile, thinking that this mother-in-law was easy to get along with.
Cheerfully, she said, “Thank you, Mom.”
After locking the bedroom door, Gu Yihan linked arms with Madam Lu and said warmly, “Mom, let’s go downstairs.”
“All right.”
Madam Lu replied, and the two of them chatted and laughed all the way down, completely ignoring Fang Yi behind them.
Seeing that neither Madam Lu nor Gu Yihan acknowledged her, Fang Yi stomped her foot in anger.
Muttering under her breath, she said, “What kind of people are these, treating me like a thief.”
In the Living Room, Hearing footsteps on the stairs, Mr. Lu said expressionlessly, “The food’s ready. We’ve been waiting for you.”
He set down the newspaper, stood up, and took his seat at the head of the dining table.
Lu Huailin got up from the sofa, went straight to Gu Yihan, took her hand, and led her to the table.
Lu Huaixu’s face, round and honest, held a smile. Cheerfully, he said, “Mom, see? After getting married, the little one knows how to care for someone.”
Gu Yihan shyly shot Lu Huailin a glance.
Lu Huailin didn’t care about the family’s gaze. He served his wife rice, poured water, and handed her chopsticks.
Madam Lu, sitting next to Mr. Lu, gave Lu Huaixu a cold look. “Don’t you know how to care for your own wife?”
Lu Huaixu glanced at the silent Fang Yi beside him. A flicker of understanding passed through his eyes—he realized his mother was teasing him to let his sister-in-law off the hook.
Embarrassed, he scratched his nose and fell silent.
Using serving chopsticks, Madam Lu placed a piece of fish in Gu Yihan’s bowl and softly said, “Xiaohan, we’re family. Don’t be polite.”
Gu Yihan looked at the fish in her bowl, then raised her head to smile at Madam Lu. “Thank you, Mom.”
Lu Huailin also put a piece of braised pork in his wife’s bowl.
He looked at his mother and said, “Mom, you eat quickly too. I’m taking care of my wife.”
Lu Huaixu turned to the silent Fang Yi and casually put a piece of braised pork in her bowl.
Fang Yi looked at the sudden appearance of meat in her bowl and pouted.
Mr. Lu frowned, looking at his eldest daughter-in-law. “Why didn’t you bring Miaomiao to meet his second aunt?”
Fang Yi’s hand holding the chopsticks froze, thinking bitterly: You want my daughter to call that country bumpkin “second aunt”? Does she even deserve it?
On the surface, though, she wore an apologetic expression and looked at Gu Yihan. “Second sister-in-law, I’m really sorry. It’s just that the weather suddenly cooled, and Miaomiao caught a bit of a cold, so I didn’t bring her.”
Gu Yihan said with a smile. “The child’s health is most important.”
Madam Lu smoothed things over with a cheerful smile: “Eat quickly, or the food will get cold.”
After the family happily finished their meal, housekeeper Sister He cleaned the table.
Seeing Gu Yihan sitting on the sofa, her eyes nearly closing from drowsiness, Madam Lu hurriedly called to Lu Huailin: “Pregnant women get sleepy easily. Take your wife back to rest.”
Lu Huailin didn’t hesitate, knowing she must be tired. He took her hand and went upstairs with her.
In the Bedroom, Gu Yihan, now alert again, suddenly got up.
She opened the cabinet, took out the box Madam Lu had given her, and handed it to Lu Huailin sitting on the bed.
Lu Huailin looked at his wife with a puzzled gaze. He took the box, felt its weight, and found it heavier than expected.
Seeing Lu Huailin’s reaction, Gu Yihan laughed and said, “Mom gave it to me, saying Big Sister-in-law should have one too.”
Lu Huailin didn’t pay much attention and didn’t open it. He casually tossed it onto the bed.
Then he stepped forward, wrapped his arms around Gu Yihan’s waist, and with his Adam’s apple moving, said, “If Mom gave it to you, then keep it.”
After saying that, he pressed his face against hers, breathing quickly.
Sliding slowly to her neck, he said plaintively, “Wife, it’s been three months. I miss you.”
Gu Yihan’s eyes sparkled with amusement as she watched Lu Huailin rubbing against her like a big dog.
She couldn’t help but want him too. She kissed him back, and soon the room was filled with intimate sounds.
Meanwhile, Fang Yi sat on her bed, feeling extremely unhappy.
She always felt that Gu Yihan overshadowed her the moment she arrived. She hadn’t expected that a rural girl could be so stunning.
When Lu Huaixu returned from smoking outside, he frowned at Fang Yi. “Why did you look so unhappy during dinner?”
“Luckily, the second sister-in-law didn’t notice, or she might have thought we weren’t welcoming her.”
Fang Yi became irritated at the mention of Gu Yihan but didn’t dare show it to Lu Huailin.
Instead, she changed the topic. “I saw Mom give the second sister-in-law a box today.”
Lu Huaixu paused while taking off his coat.
With sharp eyes, he looked at Fang Yi. “When you first married in, didn’t Mom also give you a box?”
“So why is it okay for you to get it, but not for the second sister-in-law?”
Fang Yi’s face stiffened. Hesitantly, she said, “You’re the eldest son. Isn’t everything in the house supposed to belong to you?”
Lu Huaixu, furious, laughed bitterly: “Mom can give her things to whomever she wants. You don’t get to question that.”
Saying this, he put on his coat and slammed the door.
Madam Lu sat in the living room chatting idly with Mr. Lu.
Hearing the footsteps and seeing her eldest son angry, she didn’t even need to ask—she knew the couple had quarreled.
Sighing, she said, “I just don’t understand how Fang Yi became like this.”
Lu Huaixu paced to sit across from his mother, tugging at the corners of his mouth. He couldn’t make sense of it either.
He and Fang Yi had been classmates since high school. Her family favored sons over daughters, so she had always been cautious.
He hadn’t expected that after just ten years of marriage, enjoying good times, she would forget what it was like to struggle.
Mr. Lu glanced at his eldest son meaningfully. “Your taste in women is far worse than your younger brother’s.”
“Your wife’s nature has always been like this; she didn’t change over time.”
