The next day., Gu Yihan slept very well that night. Lying in bed, she closed her eyes and stretched lazily.
She heard Lu Huailin’s laughter beside her. Opening her eyes, she saw him looking at her with a face full of adoration.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she buried her face in Lu Huailin’s chest.
In a muffled voice, she asked, “Will you be good to me for the rest of your life?”
Lu Huailin was momentarily stunned at his wife’s question.
Then he suddenly laughed. The little ungrateful one finally realized how good he had been to her.
He leaned down and kissed the top of Gu Yihan’s head. “You’re my wife. If I don’t treat you well, who else would I?”
Gu Yihan took a deep breath, trying to calm herself, thinking, If Lu Huailin ever changes his mind in the future, I’ll just dump him first.
Then her eyes swept down to his lower abdomen. She snorted coldly. Before dumping him, I’ll have to take care of him first.
Following his wife’s gaze, Lu Huailin’s whole body tensed.
He quickly patted her back. “Don’t worry. Your man will only ever respond to you in this lifetime.”
Gu Yihan rolled her eyes at him in exasperation and turned her head, snorting. If men’s words could be trusted, pigs could climb trees.
Her stomach grumbled loudly. She reached out and patted her husband’s arm. “Your daughter is hungry.”
Lu Huailin also heard the sound and knew his wife was hungry. He didn’t dare delay and quickly got up to get dressed.
He didn’t forget to ask Gu Yihan’s opinion: “It’s a bit cold this morning. Should I bring breakfast to the bedroom?”
Gu Yihan rolled her eyes. “No, I’ll go downstairs to eat.”
After getting dressed, Lu Huailin quickly grabbed the back of his wife’s head and kissed her.
Gu Yihan was taken aback for a moment, then pushed him away. “Don’t you practice hygiene? You haven’t even washed up.”
Lu Huailin laughed cheerfully and opened the door to leave.
Mother Lu, sitting on the sofa knitting, looked up after hearing the noise.
Seeing only Lu Huailin and no Gu Yihan, she asked curiously, “Has your wife not woken up?”
Lu Huailin replied while walking toward the kitchen, “She’s awake. Just getting up.”
After a while, there was still no sound from her.
Mother Lu looked toward the kitchen, saw her son busy, and murmured, “As expected, sons are just money-losing ventures.”
“Marrying off a son is a loss; raising a son is a loss.”
When Gu Yihan got up, she felt comfortable wearing the cotton shoes she had made herself and walked lightly.
As she passed behind Mother Lu, she heard the comment and smiled.
She completely agreed with Mother Lu’s words in her heart. A daughter is truly a treasure. She patted her belly, thinking, You’re definitely going to be a little quilted jacket.
Lu Huailin placed the cooked shredded pork noodles on the dining table.
Gu Yihan smiled and sat beside Mother Lu. “Mom, do you want to try Huailin’s cooking?”
Mother Lu kept knitting without stopping, glanced at Gu Yihan’s fair little face, and smiled, “I already ate breakfast.”
“Eat first. Later we’ll go to the Friendship Store. I still have some foreign currency vouchers.”
Gu Yihan’s eyes lit up at the mention of the Friendship Store.
“Mom, you’re amazing! I’ve been wanting to go for so long.”
Seeing Gu Yihan so happy, Mother Lu stopped knitting.
She took her hand and told her about all the rare and interesting things at the Friendship Store.
Lu Huailin saw that his wife had gotten so absorbed in chatting that she’d forgotten breakfast.
He quickly walked over, pulled her to the dining table, and said, “Hurry up and eat. The Friendship Store won’t run away.”
At the Friendship Store entrance, Gu Yihan and Mother Lu walked through the bustling crowd into the store.
It was Gu Yihan’s first time at a Friendship Store, where only foreign currency vouchers were accepted.
She looked at the dazzling shelves: jade, rosewood furniture, coffee, and all sorts of imported snacks and drinks.
Her eyes were drawn to a delicately carved, rustic jewelry box.
Because of the crowd, Lu Huailin was worried and followed her closely, afraid someone might bump into her.
He noticed her sparkling eyes and immediately knew she liked it.
He hurried over, carefully examined the jewelry box, and teased her, “Wife, do you like it?”
Gu Yihan walked to him, annoyed but happy.
She took the jewelry box from his hands and held it lovingly. “Don’t you think it’s beautiful?”
Lu Huailin couldn’t understand women’s thoughts, so he could only nod and agree. “Beautiful.”
Mother Lu walked around the store, bought two boxes of beautifully packaged chocolates, a down comforter for Gu Yihan, and a set of colorful bed sheets.
She walked over to Gu Yihan, looking at the jewelry box in her hands. “Xiaohan has good taste. This jewelry box is an antique.”
Gu Yihan beamed at the compliment, feeling proud of her eye for beauty.
“Mom, I just like the craftsmanship of this box,” she said with a smile.
Mother Lu handed her items to Lu Huailin, then linked arms with Gu Yihan. “Xiaohan, see if there’s anything else you like.”
Gu Yihan followed her around, but aside from a washing machine, she didn’t see anything else she wanted.
Noticing her gaze linger on the washing machine, Mother Lu asked softly, “Do you like the washing machine?”
Gu Yihan waved her hand. “Mom, it’s not necessary.”
Mother Lu understood that when Gu Yihan gave birth, she wouldn’t have time to help with postpartum care, and the couple would have to manage on their own.
Having a washing machine would at least make laundry less stressful.
She patted Gu Yihan’s hand. “Then let’s buy the washing machine.”
Gu Yihan quickly shook her head. “No, Mom. It’s so far, it won’t be easy to transport.”
Mother Lu was momentarily taken aback. Not easy to transport?
She glanced at her son and chuckled, “Silly. Just give them the address, and the Friendship Store will deliver it.”
Gu Yihan was surprised. “They deliver it?”
Mother Lu didn’t say more and instructed Lu Huailin to keep an eye on Gu Yihan so no one would bump into her.
Seeing Mother Lu go to pay, Gu Yihan tugged at Lu Huailin’s sleeve and whispered, “Isn’t the washing machine too expensive?”
Lu Huailin looked meaningfully at her belly for a few seconds. “When you give birth, Mom won’t have time to take care of you during your postpartum confinement.”
Gu Yihan was confused. What does not having time for confinement have to do with buying a washing machine?
Before she could figure it out, she saw many people rushing toward the Friendship Store entrance.
She wondered what was going on, then heard familiar shouting and scolding.
She looked up in disbelief and asked Lu Huailin, “Husband, doesn’t that sound familiar?”
Lu Huailin held his wife’s hand tightly, frowning. “It should be the mother and son who exchanged tickets with Shen Yujie on the train.”
