At the Beijing Train Station, Finally off the train. A whole day and night of travel had left Gu Yihan completely drained.
Lu Huailin was at the station exit, holding the luggage in one hand and his listless wife’s hand in the other.
A cold wind blew, making him shiver.
Worried that Gu Yihan might catch a chill, Lu Huailin quickly opened the luggage.
He took out a women’s military coat and draped it over her shoulders. Then he asked, “Wife, are you feeling cold?”
Gu Yihan touched the coat and looked at Lu Huailin in surprise. “Not cold. Did you change into this women’s military coat?”
Lu Huailin nodded and made a confirming sound.
“If you’re cold, just tell me. We still have to wait a bit before my elder brother comes to pick us up.”
Gu Yihan nodded silently. It was really cold here; her breath came out in white clouds.
Before long, a military jeep pulled up in front of them. Lu Huailin opened the door and helped Gu Yihan into the car first.
The driver, Lu Huaixu, glanced at Lu Huailin and said, “You really are something.”
“Several years without coming home to see Mom and Dad. If it weren’t for your wife being pregnant, would you still skip this year too?”
Lu Huailin rolled his eyes at his elder brother. “Mom and Dad don’t want to see me anyway.”
Lu Huaixu drove on while retorting, “Isn’t it because you never get married…”
Then he suddenly realized Gu Yihan was sitting in the back and swallowed the rest of his words.
Lu Huailin smirked at his brother. “I have a wife now.”
At The Lu Family Home, Mrs. Lu paced in the living room, muttering to Mr. Lu on the sofa, “I wonder if Huailin’s wife will adapt to the weather here. Better not catch a cold getting off the train. It suddenly got colder these past few days.”
Mr. Lu put down his newspaper and glanced at his pacing wife. “Aren’t you the one who didn’t like Huailin’s choice of wife?”
Mrs. Lu glared at him and said unhappily, “Who told you I didn’t like her?”
“Well, you gave a dowry to the elder daughter-in-law, but didn’t tell anyone to give one to the younger daughter-in-law?”
Mrs. Lu looked at him with disdain. “Am I stupid? I had to hand it to the younger daughter-in-law myself, so she would remember it and know it came from me.”
Mr. Lu shook his head in helpless amusement. “It’s the same thing. You give it to Huailin; he gives it to Gu Yihan. End of story.”
Mrs. Lu looked at him with a scornful gaze. “Of course it’s not the same. You’re a rough man; you don’t understand a woman’s little thoughts.”
Creak.
Mrs. Lu heard the door open and thought it was Lu Huailin and Gu Yihan returning. Excited, she went out—only to see the elder daughter-in-law, Fang Yi, and her smile faded.
“Mom, has my sister-in-law not come home yet?”
Fang Yi greeted Mr. Lu on the sofa with a smile, then turned to Mrs. Lu. “Mom, has Aunt He finished making the meal? I’m hungry.”
Mrs. Lu glanced at her coolly. “Wait until Huailin and the others get back, then we’ll eat.”
Fang Yi’s eyes flashed with displeasure, but she forced a smile. “Then I’ll go upstairs to rest first.”
Mrs. Lu nodded lightly.
Fang Yi went upstairs, passing Lu Huailin’s room, and noticed everything inside had been newly arranged.
She scoffed. “A country bumpkin, and the mother-in-law is going out of her way—don’t even know if he’ll appreciate it.”
Outside the House, Mrs. Lu kept her ears open for noises outside, and when she heard a car at the yard gate, she said, “Old Lu, hurry! Your younger son is back.” Then she rushed outside.
Mr. Lu watched his wife walk off and muttered softly from the sofa, “Since when do elders greet the younger generation?”
Lu Huailin was helping Gu Yihan out of the car when he saw Mrs. Lu.
Holding his wife’s hand, he proudly said, “Mom, look, this is your daughter-in-law.”
Mrs. Lu immediately liked Gu Yihan at first sight: fair skin, double eyelids, big eyes.
Gu Yihan shyly said, “Mom.”
Mrs. Lu laughed and pushed Lu Huailin aside, warmly linking her arm with Gu Yihan’s.
She fussed over her: “Oh, my daughter-in-law is really beautiful.”
She felt the warmth through the military coat.
Lu Huailin and his elder brother exchanged glances and both saw a look of disdain in each other’s eyes.
Gu Yihan was flustered by her mother-in-law’s enthusiasm. She had imagined many scenarios of a cruel, critical mother-in-law, rolling her eyes at her.
Who would’ve thought she would have such a kind and enthusiastic mother-in-law?
Mr. Lu sat seriously on the sofa, waiting for Mrs. Lu to lead the younger daughter-in-law to greet him.
But Mrs. Lu walked past him with Gu Yihan—heading upstairs.
“Cough, cough,”
Gu Yihan turned to look at Mr. Lu and asked Mrs. Lu, puzzled: “Mom?”
Mrs. Lu pointed at the man on the sofa and cheerfully introduced, “That’s Huailin’s dad.”
Mr. Lu: “….”
Lu Huailin and his elder brother, who had just entered, exchanged speechless looks at Mrs. Lu’s behavior.
Gu Yihan froze, embarrassed. She glanced at Lu Huailin and then said politely, “Dad.”
Mr. Lu, used to holding a high position, tried to smile but gave up, only managing a faint “Hmm.”
Mrs. Lu glared at him and whispered to Gu Yihan, “Come, Mom has something for you.”
Gu Yihan didn’t overthink it and followed Mrs. Lu to the bedroom.
She sat on the bed, observing the new furnishings.
Soon, Mrs. Lu came in carrying a box.
She handed it to Gu Yihan with a smile. “When you married Huailin, we didn’t give a dowry. This time, since you’re back, we’ll make it up.”
Gu Yihan politely pushed it away. “Mom, Huailin already gave me a dowry.”
Mrs. Lu was pleased with Gu Yihan’s attitude. She didn’t have shallow eyes, unlike Fang Yi, who back then couldn’t keep her eyes off the box.
Mrs. Lu put the box directly on Gu Yihan’s lap.
Smiling, she said, “What Huailin gave is his own gesture. What we give is our own gesture.”
Gu Yihan looked at the box on her lap. It was heavy—must contain a lot.
Mrs. Lu noticed her expression and laughed. “Your elder sister-in-law also got one. We treat all daughters-in-law fairly; one shouldn’t have it while the other doesn’t.”
Gu Yihan knew she couldn’t refuse, so she smiled and said, “Thank you, Mom.”
She then casually placed the box on the dressing table.
Fang Yi went to the bathroom and passed Lu Huailin’s room, finding the door closed.
She pressed her ear to the door, then barged in, eyes scanning Gu Yihan sitting on the bed.
Jealousy flashed in her eyes, and she thought to herself: “Ugh, she’s got that seductive look. No wonder Huailin is completely smitten.”
Mrs. Lu’s face darkened. “Don’t you know how to knock before entering?”
Fang Yi waved her off. “Mom, we’re all family here. Who needs to knock?”
Gu Yihan looked at Fang Yi, annoyed by her complete lack of boundaries.
“So this is the sister-in-law. I’m your elder sister-in-law. No wonder my little brother insisted on marrying you—you really are beautiful,” Fang Yi exaggerated.
Mrs. Lu laughed at her. “If you can’t speak properly, just shut up.”
