Early the next morning—
“Bang, bang, bang!”
Gu Yihan was awakened by loud knocking at the courtyard gate. She opened her eyes and realized she was alone in the bedroom.
She put on a white shirt, paired it with black pants, slipped into small leather shoes, tidied herself up, and walked out.
As soon as she entered the living room, she was startled by how many people were standing inside.
She looked around, trying to find Lu Huailin, when a cold, sharp gaze swept over her.
Just as she was feeling uneasy, Lu Huailin’s voice sounded: “Xiaohan, I’ve got water ready for you. Go wash up.”
It felt like the most beautiful voice in the world. She hurried toward the kitchen.
Lowering her voice, she muttered to him, “Why are there so many people at home? I still have to go to work!”
Lu Huailin poured water for her face, squeezed toothpaste onto her toothbrush, and placed it by her right hand.
Then he patiently explained, “You don’t need to go to work today. The military already arranged leave for you with the textile factory.”
Her movements paused. She raised her head, her expression turning cold.
“Who gave them permission?”
Lu Huailin reached out to grab her arm, but she shook him off.
With no other choice, he tried to soothe her.
“This isn’t something you and I can decide.”
She pursed her lips and said nothing. After washing up quickly, she turned to go back to the bedroom, but a man’s voice stopped her.
A handsome man walked over, bent slightly, and made an inviting gesture.
“Comrade Gu, let’s talk.”
She looked at him warily and sneered.
“What’s wrong with your eyes? Why are they twitching like you’ve got a spasm?”
Then she sized him up.
“You do look decent, but going around attracting bees and butterflies is your fault.”
She hadn’t missed how this flirtatious man had just mocked Lu Huailin.
Lu Huailin pretended not to hear, though he was holding back laughter.
This was Leng Xiao. Ever since childhood, he had relied on his good looks to coax young women.
Calmly, Lu Huailin poured water for the two middle-aged men in the room.
One of them smiled and said, “Kid, your wife is quite cautious.”
Lu Huailin set the cup down, pride in his eyes, but modest in tone.
“Commander Tang, you’re joking. She’s just timid.”
Commander Tang burst out laughing.
“Ha ha! You’re lying. Your wife isn’t timid at all.”
“Most people don’t even dare meet mine and Old Hu’s eyes, yet she looks straight at us. That’s timid? Isn’t that right, Old Hu?”
The other man on the wooden sofa nodded stiffly.
Their voices were loud, and Gu Yihan heard everything clearly from the bedroom.
She froze.
She hadn’t expected these two men to be the top leaders of this military region.
Forgive her for being small-time—in her past life, the highest-ranking people she’d met were just university professors.
Suddenly, a white-haired old man came running in, agile despite his age, shouting,
“It’s done! It’s done!”
“This is a miracle! The wounds can heal quickly—our soldiers are saved!”
After shouting, he burst into tears. His own son had died on the battlefield from excessive blood loss.
Commander Tang and Commander Hu stood up at once.
“Old Tong, are you sure this medicine works?”
The old man snorted angrily.
“You can question my character, but don’t question my pharmaceutical skills!”
“Then have you made the finished medicine?” they asked in unison.
Old Tong’s smile stiffened.
“Come on, you do it yourselves! You talk like it’s nothing—just blowing hot air!”
“If it were that easy, would that hamster spirit even bother trading with us? A bunch of uncultured big shots!”
With that, he carefully carried his experimental results into another room.
Commander Tang and Commander Hu called Lu Huailin into the courtyard.
After sizing him up, they said, “For the next few days, your wife can’t leave Kun City.”
“It’ll take time to investigate her hometown. Later, she’ll need to cooperate.”
Lu Huailin was about to object when Commander Hu interrupted coldly.
“Since that creature came for your wife, if we don’t investigate thoroughly…”
He glanced at Lu Huailin and continued,
“Do you want your wife to be tied to that creature in the same way…?”
He didn’t finish the sentence, leaving it implied.
Lu Huailin’s face darkened.
“Commander Hu, that’s a bit much.”
“My wife has no selfish motives. If she did, she could’ve traded those medicines with the hamster herself instead of handing them over.”
“She trusted you. She trusted the country.”
“If you won’t protect her, fine. But if anyone dares to scheme behind her back, they’ll have to see whether the Lu family agrees.”
With that, he returned to the bedroom, pulled Gu Yihan into his arms, and gently patted her back.
She didn’t understand what was going on. Resting her head on his chest, listening to his strong heartbeat, she felt at ease.
His low voice sounded by her ear.
“Don’t worry. I’ll protect you.”
She realized she had been too naive and hummed softly in response, her voice thick with emotion.
…
Over the next two days, people came and went constantly. Everything was handled so discreetly that even the neighbors noticed nothing.
At the entrance to the military family compound—Zhou Jianguo and Gu Aidang, wearing sour-smelling clothes, walked up to the guard.
Zhou Jianguo glared at him.
“I’m the father of Commander Lu’s wife. Why won’t you let me in?”
The guard replied calmly, “You need someone inside to sign for you before you can enter.”
Gu Aidang stood aside, watching quietly.
He had only come to testify that Gu Yihan was Zhou Jianguo’s daughter.
As Zhou Jianguo kept arguing, a sharp female voice rang out.
“Oh? Whose family members are you?”
Qiao Shuhui asked arrogantly.
Zhou Jianguo hurried forward.
“I’m Gu Yihan’s biological father. That silly girl didn’t even tell us she got married.”
Qiao Shuhui’s eyes flickered. She smiled at the guard.
“Let them in. I’ll sign.”
“Who would bear to let their father stand outside in the sun?”
She escorted Zhou Jianguo and Gu Aidang to Gu Yihan’s courtyard.
Just as she turned to leave, Zhou Jianguo stunned her.
Instead of knocking, he kicked the gate open.
Before she could curse, a group of armed soldiers rushed out and surrounded the three of them.
