The next day—
Rumors spread throughout the family compound. With nothing better to do, the military wives began gossiping, saying that Regiment Commander Lu had falsified his injuries.
If he had really been so badly hurt, how could he recover after only staying in the military hospital for a few days and look completely normal?
They said he was putting on an act to climb higher in rank, but didn’t even bother to make it convincing.
Gu Yihan was riding her women’s bicycle when she was stopped by a military wife wearing an old uniform.
She took a closer look and confirmed she had never seen this woman before.
“Do you need something?” she asked.
The woman put on a familiar, friendly expression and stepped forward, grabbing the hand that was holding Gu Yihan’s bicycle.
Smiling, she said, “Sister-in-law Lu, you might not know me. My husband is Deputy Regiment Commander Ding. You can call me Sister Ding.”
Gu Yihan quietly withdrew her hand and looked at her in confusion.
“Sister Ding, what do you need?”
Sister Ding slapped her forehead, pretending she had forgotten something in her rush.
Leaning close, she whispered mysteriously, “Has Regiment Commander Lu completely recovered?”
Gu Yihan’s eyes darkened, and her expression turned cold.
“How could he recover so fast? He almost didn’t survive.”
She felt certain this woman had bad intentions and decided to trust her instincts.
When the woman tried to grab her again, Gu Yihan pushed her away and said coldly, “You’re delaying me from getting to work.”
Before the woman could react, Gu Yihan mounted her bike and rode off.
As she rode, she thought things through. Lu Huailin’s recovery had been too fast, attracting unwanted attention.
She should actually thank Sister Ding. Otherwise, she wouldn’t even know how bad things might become later.
Even though she hadn’t found a solution yet, being prepared in advance was still good.
Since reaching an agreement with Gu Yihan, the little hamster had grown bolder again.
Lying in her spatial space, it muttered, “Gu Yihan, how can I improve my psychic abilities?”
Hearing its voice, Gu Yihan’s eyes lit up. She had an idea.
Pretending to be casual, she said, “Just do whatever you did before. I don’t know about that stuff.”
The hamster rolled over and sneered.
“This planet of yours is so poor. There’s nothing here.”
Gu Yihan agreed, “Sure, your place is better. But you didn’t have abilities from the start either, right?”
The hamster thought about it and realized she was right. Their world had once been similar too, before many creatures gradually mutated.
It drooped its head.
“There are no mutated plants or animals here, and no materials for leveling up abilities.”
Gu Yihan sighed. “If only you could travel far. Then you could look for things yourself.”
The hamster’s fur instantly stood on end.
“Who says I can’t go out? I can leave anytime! No matter where I am, I can return to your space instantly!”
Inside, Gu Yihan was delighted.
But on the surface, she sneered.
“If you’re that powerful, how did I beat you senseless with a rolling pin?”
Thinking of the rolling pin made the hamster furious.
“If I weren’t bound by that auxiliary jade pendant, even a hundred of you wouldn’t be enough!”
Gu Yihan’s eyes shone even brighter.
She coaxed, “Why not get help from the government?”
“I’m just a nobody. You could cooperate with the state.”
“They have lots of good stuff. Maybe they have something that can help you level up.”
The hamster found this reasonable. Back on Kepler, it had often cooperated with the authorities.
But it soon looked gloomy again.
“I don’t know anyone powerful here.”
Gu Yihan was so excited she blurted out loud, “Don’t worry! Leave it to me!”
Even without seeing her expression, the hamster could feel her good mood.
It sensed something wrong and threatened, “Are you trying to trick me? If something happens to me, I’ll expose your—”
It tried to say “space,” but couldn’t get the word out.
Gu Yihan secretly sighed in relief.
Ever since learning about the hamster, she had been thinking about how to control it.
Now she knew: anything she didn’t want it to say or know, she could suppress.
It was limited, but it was enough.
And now, she was putting it to use.
Humming happily, Gu Yihan pushed open the accounting office door.
Seeing her good mood, Sister Min and Su Yonghong smiled.
“You’re so happy today. Is your husband better?”
Gu Yihan smiled brightly, her beautiful eyes making the two women stare.
Sister Min exclaimed, “You rarely smile from the heart. I didn’t expect you to look so beautiful when you do.”
Su Yonghong tugged at her sleeve.
Sister Min realized she’d spoken badly.
Embarrassed, she said, “No, I mean… you usually just smile politely. Sometimes you laugh like a goose. You’ve never smiled until your eyes turned into slits.”
Gu Yihan: “…”
Su Yonghong: “…”
Still in a good mood, Gu Yihan joked, “So you mean I’m either fake-smiling or honking like a goose?”
Sister Min panicked and waved her hands.
“That’s not what I meant! I was just…”
She couldn’t finish.
Su Yonghong stepped in and patted her shoulder.
“Can’t you tell she’s joking with you?”
Sister Min finally realized and shouted, “Hey! You’re teasing me!”
She rushed over and tickled Gu Yihan.
Gu Yihan knew Sister Min was straightforward and cheerful, always living like she was eighteen. That meant she had married well.
The day passed in laughter.
After work—Gu Yihan deliberately rushed home in a panic.
After parking her bike, she went straight to Lu Huailin, who was cooking.
Lowering her voice, she said, “That Taoist came to me again.”
Lu Huailin paused while cracking eggs.
“What do you mean—”
Before he could finish, his pupils shrank.
A mouse had suddenly appeared out of nowhere.
He was sure he wasn’t seeing things.
Gu Yihan pointed at the hamster with trembling hands.
“It’s it.”
“It said it wants to cooperate with me and find some things. But how would I have those?”
The hamster sized Lu Huailin up critically and pulled out a vial from its cheek pouch.
Floating in midair, it waved its paw, and the vial stopped in front of him.
Lu Huailin subconsciously grabbed it.
Looking up, he asked, “What does this mean?”
The hamster lifted its head proudly.
“This is the exchange material.”
Lu Huailin was already shocked by its sudden appearance. Hearing it speak completely overturned his worldview.
Instinctively, he pulled Gu Yihan behind him.
“You stay here for now. I’ll go report this to my superiors.”
Holding her hand tightly, he led her out of the house.
