I recently picked up Apocalypse Star House Hoarding, a novel that starts with a storage door opening into another world entirely. Within just a few paragraphs, something clicked in my memory, reminding me of a completely different novel—except for the similar spatial and time difference concept. That novel was I Have Paid Too Much for This Home.
At first, I tried to brush aside the connection, but I couldn’t. Curiosity got the best of me, and I went searching for it in my NovelUpdates reading list. And there it was. I Have Paid Too Much for This Home—a novel I’ve already read three or four times. I wasn’t planning on diving into romance novels anytime soon, but the pull was too strong. So, I caved in and decided to read it again.
Having finished it once more, I was quickly reminded why I love this story so much. The biggest reason? The concept. It’s unique, one of the few novels that truly stand apart from the usual tropes. On top of that, the character development is beautifully handled. Unlike stories that drown you in lengthy descriptions, this one conveys emotions and motivations with just the right amount of detail. Every action and decision makes sense within the world the author has created.
And the romance? It’s not just a love story; it’s a journey. Watching the relationship evolve, seeing the characters’ emotions shift and grow, and witnessing their eventual acknowledgment of those feelings—it all felt so natural. It’s the kind of story that makes you wonder if something like this could be happening right under your nose, unnoticed.
At only around 70 chapters, it’s a relatively short read, but that only adds to its charm. It’s well-paced, engaging, and leaves a lasting impression. Even after multiple re-reads, I know I’ll return to it again in the future. If you’re looking for a unique, well-written romance with a captivating concept, I highly recommend giving I Have Paid Too Much for This Home a chance.
