Inside the house, one of the idle villagers stopped Aunt Yang and hurried out to fetch the hot water.
Tang Wan unceremoniously opened Doctor Zhang’s medicine box, rummaged through it, and found a small piece of ginseng.
After slicing it into pieces, she put one in Li Wu’s mouth, then asked Aunt Yang, “Do you have needle and thread? Preferably catgut.”
“Will sheep gut do?”
“That’ll work!”
Aunt Yang quickly brought a needle and sheep gut thread.
With a look of disdain, Tang Wan picked through Doctor Zhang’s medicine box, selecting some herbs, and handed them to one of the idle villagers. “Boil this down from three bowls of water to one bowl. Can you do that?”
“I can!” The person lifted the hem of their clothing to form a pouch, took the herbs, and ran out.
Just then, the hot water arrived.
Tang Wan washed the sheep gut thread in the hot water, sterilized the needle over a flame, threaded it, then washed her hands. She had Aunt Yang bring alcohol to soak them for disinfection before approaching Li Wu.
“Hold him down!” Tang Wan pointed to a few people.
They obediently came over to restrain Li Wu. One of them, a scholarly-looking young man with bloodshot eyes, asked Tang Wan, “You can save him, right?”
“I’ll try my best!” Tang Wan didn’t make any absolute promises.
She rolled up her sleeves, and under the horrified gazes of the crowd, pushed all the exposed intestines back inside, then began stitching the wound.
As if sensing the pain, Li Wu’s body began to tremble.
“Hold him steady! Don’t let him move!” Tang Wan quickly said.
The crowd immediately pressed down on him with all their strength.
Minute by minute, time passed.
Those restraining Li Wu were drenched in sweat, and Tang Wan herself was also covered in it.
Humans aren’t machines—they sweat easily. And in this overweight body, she sweated even more.
The worst part was, there was no one to wipe it for her!
While stitching, Tang Wan warned them not to let a drop of sweat fall on Li Wu’s wound, or he would surely die.
Hearing that made everyone’s hearts tremble. They turned their heads aside as they held him, terrified of becoming his accidental killer.
They had it easy—they only had to turn their heads.
Tang Wan, however, couldn’t.
Her focus had to stay razor-sharp, and she couldn’t even blink.
When sweat trickled into her eyes, the sting was unbearable.
Just as she was feeling annoyed, a calloused hand reached over and gently wiped the sweat from her forehead.
Tang Wan glanced sideways at her, then quickly looked back at her work, saying, “Why are you here?”
“Mother was worried, so she sent me to check on you!” Ling Yue said with a smile.
“Mm. Thanks.” Tang Wan felt a warmth in her heart, steadied herself, and continued focusing on closing the wound.
The room was silent; no one dared to even breathe loudly.
Only Doctor Zhang, probably realizing Tang Wan couldn’t spare the time to deal with him, began cursing outside again after a while, trying to barge in to get his medicine box.
But the villagers wouldn’t let him in, blocking the doorway.
As luck would have it, just then Tang Wan had someone give Li Wu another slice of ginseng to hold in his mouth.
Doctor Zhang was about to explode with rage, yet there was nothing he could do!
His medicine!
Tang Wan had taken so many of his herbs, even used his ginseng!
And he couldn’t even get inside to retrieve the box!
Tang Wan ignored him, thinking she’d deal with him later—
Two hours later, Li Wu’s wound was finally stitched closed.
Tang Wan had someone feed him the decocted medicine before letting out a long, heavy sigh of relief.
The villagers’ expressions were complicated.
Especially those who had been holding Li Wu down—
Tang Wan’s skill was simply… impossible not to respect.
The wound was completely closed, leaving only a centipede-like scar. Not only was the bleeding stopped, but Li Wu’s breathing had grown steady and even.
