“A lowly maid?” Ji Wushuang sneered. “You probably don’t know this, but the Director of the Imperial Observatory has already gone to the Golden Hall to accuse you of abducting his daughter into your residence. You’d better pray to the heavens that the woman in that well is just a servant… otherwise… heh…”
Ji Wushuang didn’t finish his sentence—because the corpse had already been pulled up.
Huangfu Rongsheng immediately panicked and hurriedly signaled to his servant.
The servant nodded and, taking advantage of the distraction, slipped away.
The guards who had retrieved the body looked grim. As they laid it on the ground, every Imperial Guard sucked in a sharp breath, their faces darkening.
The girl looked no more than thirteen or fourteen years old. Her entire body was covered in wounds, and her lower body was a mangled, bloody mess…
Her eyes were wide open, bulging, staring up at the heavens as if silently questioning why such a fate had befallen her.
One of the guards trembled with rage, drew his blade, and charged at Huangfu Rongsheng, roaring, “I’ll kill you, you beast!”
Huangfu Rongsheng was terrified, stumbling backward until he slipped on a stone and fell hard onto the ground.
“Stop!” Ji Wushuang shouted as he rushed forward.
Just as the blade was about to strike, he grabbed the man’s wrist in time. “Zhao Tao, have you lost your mind?!”
“Let me go, sir! I’m going to kill him!”
“If you kill him, your life is over too! Are you really going to ruin your future over someone like him?! Are you stupid?!”
“But… but…”
Zhao Tao dropped his blade, fell to his knees, and crawled back step by step to the girl’s body. Trembling, he took off his outer robe and gently covered her, then carefully lifted her into his arms.
Another guard, who was close to Zhao Tao, spoke in a heavy voice, “Sir, you can’t blame him. This girl… she’s the Director’s daughter. Zhao Tao is her cousin on her mother’s side. They grew up together… he never married, just waiting for her to come of age…”
But now… she had been destroyed by this monster.
He couldn’t continue.
Ji Wushuang’s expression darkened even further.
He turned and stared coldly at the pale-faced Huangfu Rongsheng. Noticing the suspicious wet stain beneath him, his disgust deepened.
“Men—take the Heir of Rongsheng and the corpse back to the palace!”
“I’d like to see who dares to touch him!”
Just as Ji Wushuang gave the order, a powerful female voice interrupted him.
Seeing the elegantly dressed woman walking toward them, Ji Wushuang froze.
That face… why did it look so familiar?
“Impudent! How dare you not kneel when you see the Second Prince’s Consort!” the maid beside her snapped.
The Second Prince’s consort?
Ji Wushuang frowned.
This was the consort?
Why did she look so much like Jiang Shi?
Aside from one appearing younger and well-maintained while the other looked older, the two were almost identical!
Though Ji Wushuang served near the Emperor, he had never paid much attention to the consort’s appearance.
For a man to stare at a noble lady would be highly improper.
Besides, when the Second Prince married, Ji Wushuang wasn’t yet an imperial guard. And afterward, the prince was often away at the border.
The consort herself rarely went out, and when she did, it was only to gatherings among women—never events attended by men.
So even if he had seen her before, he had never really looked closely.
But now, seeing her clearly, he almost thought he was looking at Jiang Shi.
Gu Yanshuang noticed his dazed stare, her expression turning displeased.
