What he thought—no one cared.
After this morning court session, all the doubts among the officials about the emperor granting the title of County Lady completely disappeared.
The emperor was in high spirits. He immediately ordered Wan Zhenxiang to draft an imperial decree, conferring upon Tang Wan the title of County Lady of Weng, and sent it by fast horse to Xiangxi Town.
At the same time, another decree was sent along—promoting Su Yuan to Prefect of Weng Prefecture.
Unfortunately, Tang Wan was no longer in Xiangxi Town. She was already on her way to the capital, and naturally missed the decree.
After she and Ling Yu reached Weng City, they immediately boarded a passenger ship bound for the capital.
It was a large three-deck ship.
The first level was the lowest class—Class C. It was crowded and chaotic, with seven or eight people crammed into one room. All kinds of people were there, and the smell was terrible.
The second level was Class B. It was much better than Class C—at least it didn’t stink as much, and families had separate rooms instead of being crammed together. Still, the environment wasn’t great, and the furniture was old and worn.
The best was the third level—Class A. Fewer people stayed there, with fewer rooms overall. Each room was spacious, bright, and divided into two or three sections.
Tang Wan wasn’t about to let herself—or her handsome husband—suffer, so naturally she wanted a Class A room.
However, it was the season for the provincial exams, and many candidates were rushing to the capital.
By the time they arrived, there were no Class A rooms left—only the lowest Class C.
With seven or eight people sharing one room and the unbearable smell, Tang Wan was extremely unwilling. She discussed it with her husband, “How about we wait for the next ship?”
“If we miss this one, we won’t make it in time for the exam,” Ling Yu shook his head and stepped aboard. “There’s no hardship I haven’t endured—I’m not that delicate.”
Tang Wan quickly followed, her brows tightly furrowed. “Husband, I’m sorry. If you hadn’t accompanied me back, you wouldn’t have to suffer like this.”
Ling Yu chuckled. “Don’t take all the blame on yourself. This isn’t your fault. Your father had an accident—if I didn’t go back to check, would that be right?”
“But…”
“Alright. Have you forgotten the kind of places we used to live in? We’ll just make do.”
Hearing this, Tang Wan said no more, though she felt secretly annoyed with herself.
They handed Ta Xue over to the boatman, asking him to take it to the livestock area and feed it the best hay, then headed to their room.
Tang Wan had thought the Class C area would already be bad enough—but upon entering, it was even worse than she imagined.
A smelly sock suddenly flew toward them from who-knows-where. The couple tilted their heads to dodge it, then looked inside.
There were five or six sweaty laborers inside, sitting and standing in all sorts of sloppy ways—picking their noses, scratching their feet, talking loudly…
All kinds of crude behavior.
The bed sheets and blankets were once white but now looked grimy, covered with suspicious stains. Worst of all, there was a nauseating smell—a mix of fried stinky tofu and rotten century eggs.
Not just Tang Wan—even Ling Yu stopped in his tracks, his expression shifting in indescribable ways.
“Husband, let’s just stay on the deck!” Tang Wan grabbed him and turned to leave.
There was no way she would stay in there!
This time, Ling Yu fell silent.
Because even he couldn’t accept it.
He had endured many hardships before—but that was all in the past.
Later, he rose to a position second only to one, admired by countless people. Now, with Tang Wan taking care of him…
He had grown accustomed to comfort.
Tang Wan found the boatman, casually tossing him a few pieces of silver, and asked seriously again, “Are there really no Class A rooms left?” (See? I’m not short on money!)
The boatman caught the silver, looking somewhat helpless. “Right now, there really aren’t any. But when we reach Meihua Town, some passengers will disembark. At that time, if Class A rooms become available, I can reserve one for you?”
