“Don’t panic yet,” Tang Wan comforted her, then turned to the village head and asked,
“Are you willing to sell the land you own? Don’t worry—I’m only buying the land. For now, I won’t touch the bamboo. If I ever do in the future, I’ll make sure to arrange work for you so you won’t lose your livelihood. Of course, if you’d rather seek opportunities elsewhere, you’re free to do so.”
“Well…”
The village head hesitated.
“Father-in-law!”
Before he could decide, his daughter-in-law couldn’t hold back any longer.
“If this young lady wants to buy it, then let’s sell! These bamboo groves aren’t worth much anyway—we can’t rely on them for the rest of our lives.”
The village head’s wife also agreed.
“That’s right! And the young lady already said she won’t cut the bamboo for now, and even if she does later, she’ll arrange jobs for us first. You’ve spent your whole life selling bamboo goods—do you really want your two sons to live the same way?”
The village head looked displeased.
“What do you women know? Selling bamboo is still a livelihood! If we sell the land, we’ll have nothing left!”
“How would we have nothing?” his daughter-in-law retorted immediately. “Didn’t the young lady say she’d look after us? And even if she doesn’t, we’ll still have money from selling the land! Isn’t it hard enough already to find a wife for the eldest? The second one still isn’t married! If we keep relying on bamboo weaving, he won’t be able to marry for at least another three years. Look at him—he’s already twenty-five! In three more years he’ll be twenty-eight. Other families already have children running around at that age!”
The daughter-in-law clearly harbored deep resentment toward the bamboo business.
And it was understandable.
Years ago, she had suggested moving the whole family to Weng City. Even running a small business there would have been better than staying home working endlessly with bamboo.
But the old man had never listened.
Now someone finally wanted to buy these seemingly useless bamboo lands—and was even willing to pay good money.
Only a fool would refuse!
Ignoring the village head, the daughter-in-law turned to Tang Wan.
“You’re called Wan-niang, right? I’ll make the decision for this matter. But about the price…”
Tang Wan replied calmly,
“Good farmland outside sells for seven to eight taels per mu. If you’re willing to sell, I can offer seven taels per mu.”
“Really?!” the daughter-in-law exclaimed excitedly. “You’re really willing to pay seven taels per mu for our land?”
Not only her—everyone present looked thrilled.
Tang Wan nodded.
“Seven taels per mu. If you agree to sell, I can pay immediately.”
“Sell! Sell! Sell!” The daughter-in-law grabbed the old lady’s arm and shook it eagerly. “Mother, where else could we find such a good opportunity? Once it’s gone, it’s gone!”
The old lady patted her hand and looked at the village head.
“Seven taels per mu. Our family has eleven mu—that’s seventy-seven taels of silver. Hurry up and decide. Are we selling or not?”
Stop hesitating!
The village head still wavered.
“Father, let’s sell it,” the eldest son finally urged.
More than seventy taels of silver was enough for the whole family to live comfortably for years.
It would also easily cover the younger brother’s marriage expenses.
Seeing his entire family united against him, the village head sighed and finally gave in.
“Alright… we’ll sell.”
“That’s wonderful!”
“Exactly! With this money, I’ll buy a few more pigs to raise!”
“And chicks too! I’ll be able to eat eggs every day!”
…
The family burst into lively discussion, talking over one another as if the seventy-seven taels were already in their pockets.
Since it was already too late to go to the government office to finalize the transfer, the village head made an agreement with Tang Wan to meet at the prefectural office early the next morning.
Tang Wan agreed, then took Ling Yue and said their farewells.
