“Sorry to trouble you!” Tang Wan nodded and entered together with Ling Yue.
“Thank you, Brother Fang!” Ling Yue also expressed her thanks to Fang Hai.
“No problem, no problem!” Fang Hai laughed foolishly. He took one lingering, reluctant glance at Tang Wan before leaving, turning his head back every few steps.
Such a beautiful fairy-like woman… what a pity she was already married.
Well—even if she weren’t married, someone like him would never stand a chance.
With her looks, how could she ever fancy a man like him?
Fang Hai shook his head, stopping his wandering thoughts.
Inside, the sisters-in-law received an extremely warm welcome from the woman.
She not only brought them stools to sit on but also poured each of them a bowl of water.
The hospitality was exceptionally attentive.
Before long, an elderly woman came out from the kitchen. Seeing Tang Wan and Ling Yue, she asked at once,
“May I ask who you two ladies are…?”
“My surname is Ling, and this is my sister-in-law. Grandma, you may call her Wan-niang,” Ling Yue said with a smile as she stepped forward. “We came uninvited because we have something to discuss with the village head. May I ask when he will return?”
“I see…” the old lady smiled. “He should be back soon. The countryside is rather simple—please sit and wait for a while.”
“Thank you, Grandma. My sister-in-law and I apologize for the disturbance.”
Tang Wan and Ling Yue thought they would only need to wait a short time.
But that wait lasted two whole hours.
By the time dusk was nearly falling, the village head and his two sons finally returned, dragging bundles of bamboo behind them.
Seeing unfamiliar women in the courtyard, all three men froze in surprise.
“Ladies, who are you looking for?”
“You must be the village head?” Ling Yue asked the oldest man.
The old man nodded. “I am the head of Bamboo Village. Miss, you are…?”
“They’ve come looking for you,” the old lady interrupted. “Honestly, why did you come back so late? They’ve been waiting two hours!”
“Hehe… my daughter-in-law is pregnant,” the village head said sheepishly. “So I took the eldest and second son to cut more bamboo. We can weave extra goods to sell in the city later.”
As he spoke, he instructed his sons to move the bamboo away and tidy it up instead of leaving it piled in the courtyard while guests were present.
Ling Yue didn’t mind and had no intention of staying for dinner anyway.
Once the village head sat down, Ling Yue went straight to the point.
“Village Head, I’d like to ask—how is the land in Bamboo Village sold?”
“Huh?”
Not only the village head but everyone in the household was stunned.
The eldest son frowned immediately.
“Why would you buy land here? Our village only has bamboo—nothing else.”
The second son added,
“That’s right. Bamboo isn’t worth much! And even though the bamboo forest looks big, each household actually owns very little land.”
Ling Yue and Tang Wan exchanged glances.
Tang Wan asked, “How much land is there?”
“Uh…” Being stared at by such a beautiful young woman, the second son’s face instantly turned bright red. “All… all the land owned by the villagers together… is about thirty-odd mu.”
Tang Wan didn’t notice his embarrassment and continued,
“Then what about the rest of the bamboo forest? Who does it belong to?”
“That belongs to Master Jin,” the village head replied, glaring at his uselessly flustered son before taking over the conversation. “Only my family and a few others own small plots. The rest of the bamboo sea belongs to Lord Jin.”
“Lord Jin?”
“Yes, Lord Jin. He lives in Weng City. He made his fortune through shipping—has connections in both the underworld and official circles. Very influential. If you want to buy this bamboo sea… I’m afraid that won’t be easy.”
Ling Yue frowned and looked anxiously at Tang Wan.
“Sister-in-law, what should we do? If that’s the case, we won’t be able to acquire the rest of the land.”
