A wolf cub?
Looks like there was more to the tiger showing up in the village than it seemed.
After leaving the house, Tang Wan listened carefully to the surrounding sounds and slowly made her way to where the second branch of the family used to live.
That place had already turned into ruins.
And from within the rubble came faint rustling noises.
As Tang Wan drew closer, the sounds became clearer — even Ling Sheng heard them.
Ling Sheng immediately grew tense and stepped in front of Tang Wan protectively. “Wan-niang, something’s not right. You’re injured — don’t just rush forward.”
The moment he finished speaking, the noise suddenly stopped.
Ling Sheng became even more nervous. “What is it? Locusts?”
“No,” Tang Wan said — and just then, a whimpering sound came from the ruins.
In the next moment, a head poked out, with half a locust still clamped in its mouth.
Ling Sheng stared at the furry silver-gray head and was completely dumbfounded. “Th-this… this is a dog?”
“Whine…” You’re the dog — your whole family are dogs.
Huh?
Pretty lady — it’s you!
The silver-gray “dog” noticed Tang Wan, immediately spat out the locust, and happily ran toward her.
Startled, Ling Sheng pulled Tang Wan back.
“It’s fine,” Tang Wan stopped him and let the “dog” run up to her.
It wasn’t a dog at all, but the little wolf cub she had encountered twice before in the mountains.
After a few months, the cub had grown a lot. When it stood on its hind legs, it reached Tang Wan’s waist. Its once dull gray fur had turned silver-gray, and its bright blue eyes shone vividly.
Uh…
It actually looked like a certain animal Tang Wan knew — a husky.
Only thinner. Its coat was dull and lacked luster, and its once plump wolf-waist had shrunk several sizes.
The wolf cub affectionately nuzzled Tang Wan’s calf and looked at her eagerly.
“Awoo…” Pretty lady, do you have anything to eat? I’m starving — almost dying of hunger.
Tang Wan crouched down. “Did you lead the tiger down the mountain?”
“Whine, whine…” The wolf cub thought Tang Wan was angry. Its ears drooped, looking like it had done something wrong.
Listening to its explanation, Tang Wan finally understood why the tiger had appeared in the village.
When the earthquake struck, the tiger’s cave collapsed.
The tigress was inside at the time and was crushed to death on the spot.
The wolf cub had witnessed it and was actually delighted at first, thinking it had lucked out and could feast on tiger meat.
But unexpectedly, the male tiger soon returned and saw the wolf cub gnawing on his mate — and flew into a rage.
From that moment on, the wolf cub had been on the run.
The male tiger had chased it relentlessly these past days, turning the entire valley upside down.
Then came the locust swarm.
All the greenery in the valley was stripped away.
Yet the male tiger still refused to give up the chase — from one mountain to another, eating locusts when hungry.
The wolf cub suffered miserably, fleeing wildly in every direction.
In the end, it blundered its way into the human village.
Because it smelled a familiar scent here — very faint, but recognizable.
And because it came here, the male tiger followed it into the village too.
“Awoo…” I didn’t mean to! I told that stupid cat a thousand times — I didn’t kill his mate, she was crushed to death. But he wouldn’t believe me and kept chasing me. I’m starving and exhausted — almost dead…
Tang Wan: …
And you’re the one feeling wronged?
Do you know innocent people were harmed because of you?
“Whine…” Pretty lady, please give me something to eat — I’m really starving!
“Follow me,” Tang Wan sighed and turned to walk back.
Ling Sheng looked utterly confused and hurried after her. “Wan-niang, are you going to keep this dog?”
“Mm.” It’s more spiritual than Taxue, and after running into it so many times, it counts as fate.
Wolf cub: …
I told you I’m a wolf, you hateful two-legged creature — I’ll bite you!
