Tang Wan gave Madam Hong a meaningful look.
Madam Hong immediately understood, stopped in her tracks, and glanced upstairs.
Tang Wan caught the cue and led Ling Yu up.
Qingyuan Elegant Pavilion had four floors.
The first floor was the main hall, with a large stage in the center where the girls performed singing and dancing.
Tables and chairs were neatly arranged around the stage.
The second floor was an open balcony area lined with viewing platforms, offering a clear view of the performances below — a more refined and exclusive experience, of course, at a higher price.
The third floor housed the girls’ private rooms — there weren’t many, but each occupant was a carefully selected beauty.
The fourth floor contained the rooms of Widow Hong and her daughter Yanyan, and Tang Wan had also set up a small office-like space for herself there.
Just as the couple reached the second floor, a voice called out:
“Brother Ling?”
They turned and saw Su Yangyu looking uncertainly in Ling Yu’s direction. Around him sat several young men dressed in the blue uniforms of Qingshan Academy.
“It really is you!” Su Yangyu smiled, walking over and looking Ling Yu up and down. “You’ve really recovered.”
Ling Yu cupped his hands in greeting.
“Brother Su — what a coincidence.”
“Indeed!” Su Yangyu returned the gesture, then shot him a mischievous look.
“You’re all healed but don’t go back to the academy — instead you come here to carouse? If your wife finds out, won’t she be furious?”
Ling Yu gave a faint, knowing smile and glanced at Tang Wan beside him, who was doing her best to look calm and detached.
“I’m not completely recovered yet — but I plan to return to the academy in a few days. As for my wife, she’s understanding, gentle, and virtuous. She would never get angry with me.”
(He thought silently: If only you knew — she’s the one who brought me to the brothel!)
During the past month, Tang Wan had been visiting the Su residence every five days, always during daylight hours — when Su Yangyu himself was away at the academy — so they had rarely crossed paths.
The only time he’d ever met her was when he had gone home to retrieve a forgotten book and happened to bump into her. Because of the strict separation between men and women, they hadn’t spoken much.
So naturally, Su Yangyu was more familiar with Ling Yu, while his impression of Tang Wan came mostly from what his family had said — they often praised her, which only made him more curious about this woman.
And besides… she had slimmed down astonishingly fast. Now, she was breathtaking — like a celestial maiden descended to earth.
“That does make sense,” Su Yangyu said, recalling his family’s compliments. He wanted to praise her himself, but since she was another man’s wife, he refrained. Instead, he turned toward the disguised Tang Wan.
“And this is…?”
Tang Wan cupped her hands and replied in a clear, pleasant tone:
“I’m Yu Qi, Ling Yu’s distant cousin. Greetings, Brother Su.”
“Yu Qi?”
Ling Yu’s lips twitched. ‘Yu Qi’ — ‘Yu’s wife’?
He almost burst out laughing. She really never missed a chance to remind people of her identity.
But Su Yangyu, of course, had no idea. He returned the polite gesture.
“No wonder you have such an extraordinary bearing. So you’re Brother Ling’s cousin. What a lucky encounter! It’s been a while since you’ve seen your fellow students, hasn’t it? Why not join us for a chat?”
“Well…” Ling Yu turned to Tang Wan.
Tang Wan nodded.
“Go ahead, cousin. Brother Su’s invitation is sincere. I’ll just step away for a moment and be right back.”
“Alright then.”
Ling Yu knew she intended to visit Yanyan, so he played along and gave her a few mock-serious words of caution before heading over to Su Yangyu’s table.
Tang Wan glanced that way once more, then turned and made her way up to the fourth floor to find Yanyan.
Yanyan’s boudoir had been carefully decorated by Tang Wan herself — many of the furnishings were of fine quality.
At the entrance stood a large “Lotus Rising from Water” screen. Passing behind it, a faint fragrance of incense drifted through the air. Beyond the light green curtains was an intricately carved Eight Immortals table.
