However, Song Yunfei quickly dismissed that dangerous thought.
No, no—if she provoked him and caused him to regain his memory ahead of time, wouldn’t she be doomed?
So she said very seriously, “Even if we really stay poor forever, I won’t look down on you.”
“I love you, not your money.”
Chu Jihan fell silent for a moment, then asked a question that nearly scared Song Yunfei out of her wits.
He asked, “My ID says I’m 28, and you’re 23. When I was in college, you were still in middle school. How did you support me through my studies?”
On the surface, Song Yunfei remained calm, but inside she was in turmoil.
He’s suspicious. He’s starting to suspect!
What he was questioning wasn’t whether she had deceived him—it was her identity.
Because this exact question had already been asked by Chu Jihan to the original owner six months ago.
Now that he asked it again, he must be suspecting something.
Song Yunfei said unhappily, “Why are you asking this again? Didn’t I already tell you—I dropped out in middle school and used a borrowed ID to work!”
Chu Jihan’s eyes flickered slightly, and his expression returned to normal. “I forgot. Sorry.”
Song Yunfei huffed. “Looks like your aftereffects still haven’t gone away.”
“I’ll go cook.”
Chu Jihan didn’t continue the topic and turned toward the kitchen.
Song Yunfei wiped the sweat from her forehead.
She couldn’t imitate the original owner after all—she had slipped up.
But it wasn’t a big issue. Who would normally think something like transmigration actually existed?
Her body felt sticky all over, and she was preparing to take a shower.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.
She quickly went to open it and found it was their neighbor, Wang Yi.
Wang Yi was in his thirties, rather rugged in appearance, wearing a white undershirt that revealed a muscular build, which made Song Yunfei’s eyes light up.
“Brother Wang, you’re here to see Chu Jihan, right?”
Wang Yi scratched his head and gave a simple, honest smile. “No, I’m off today. I was thinking we haven’t eaten together in a while, so why don’t you two come over and have a meal?”
“Sure, sure!” Song Yunfei nodded repeatedly without any hesitation.
Wang Yi’s wife was an excellent cook. The moment he mentioned it, Song Yunfei immediately thought of the delicious meals she remembered.
“Alright then. My wife is already cooking. Come over quickly later.”
After seeing Wang Yi off, Song Yunfei hurried to the kitchen and called out to Chu Jihan, “Stop cooking. Brother Wang invited us over for dinner.”
Chu Jihan paused his washing of the vegetables, but seemed somewhat hesitant. “You agreed?”
“Yes. You haven’t even started cooking yet—hurry and change your clothes, we’ll go straight over.”
Song Yunfei pulled him out of the kitchen and urged him to go change.
Chu Jihan remained silent for a moment, then took a blue T-shirt from the wardrobe and went into the bathroom.
Song Yunfei pouted. Did he really have to guard against her like this? Changing a shirt and still going to the bathroom, as if afraid she might see.
Song Yunfei also picked out a T-shirt. She unbuttoned her blouse, took it off, and changed.
Chu Jihan changed quickly. When he came out of the bathroom, he saw her in the middle of undressing.
A patch of fair skin suddenly caught his eye.
Song Yunfei happened to be facing sideways. Seeing him come out, she exclaimed, “Why are you so fast!”
She quickly turned around and hurriedly pulled the T-shirt over her head. In her rush, her collar even got stuck for a moment.
Chu Jihan withdrew his gaze from her slender waist, his throat unconsciously bobbing, and he looked away.
Song Yunfei quickly adjusted her clothes, her face flushed as she turned back. “Alright, let’s go.”
However, Chu Jihan didn’t seem very willing to go. “You go by yourself. I won’t go.”
Song Yunfei was confused. “Why? Aren’t you on good terms with him? Did you have a conflict?”
They were neighbors, and Wang Yi was a full-time delivery rider. In fact, it was Wang Yi who had introduced Chu Jihan to that job.
Because of that, the two of them often delivered orders together at night, and Chu Jihan even got rides home from Wang Yi.
Chu Jihan shook his head slightly. “No.”
“Then why aren’t you going?”
Song Yunfei walked over and pulled him. “Come with me. What am I supposed to do going alone?”
Seeing her insist, Chu Jihan finally followed her out the door.
Wang Yi’s door was slightly ajar, and the aroma of food could already be smelled from outside.
Wang Yi was tidying up the table. Seeing them open the door, he quickly came forward to greet them. “Come in, come in!”
Song Yunfei responded with a smile and went inside, finding shoe covers on the rack and handing two to Chu Jihan as well.
Wang Yi’s home had air conditioning, and a wave of cool air hit them, instantly improving their mood.
Their apartment layouts were similar, except Wang Yi’s was a one-bedroom, one-living-room unit, slightly smaller, probably around fifty square meters.
Wang Yi invited them to sit and chatted casually with Chu Jihan.
“I thought you were out delivering food. Didn’t expect you to be at home.”
Chu Jihan replied, “Taking a couple of days off.”
Wang Yi said, “You really have it tough. Working during the day and delivering food at night—it’s hard to keep that up long-term.”
“Our town is small, and it’s hard to make money here. Last month I delivered nearly two thousand orders and only made a little over seven thousand. After taxes and electricity costs, it was under seven thousand.”
“My childhood friends went to big cities. With two thousand orders, they can make around fifteen thousand. I’ve already quit my job and will be heading to Haishi next month.”
Wang Yi complained while sighing.
He was a local of Qingcheng. This house was his, while his parents stayed in their hometown taking care of the children. Living close to home allowed him to visit them occasionally.
Hearing “Haishi,” Song Yunfei’s heart skipped a beat.
She glanced secretly at Chu Jihan—fortunately, he didn’t react much.
Song Yunfei asked, “Will your wife go with you?”
Wang Yi looked toward the kitchen and shook his head. “She won’t. What would she go for? Living costs are high for two people. She’ll stay here and take care of things at home.”
Song Yunfei responded with an “oh.”
Wang Yi began persuading Chu Jihan again. “Brother Chu, you’re still young and well-educated. Why stay cooped up in a small place like this? Why not go to a big city?”
Chu Jihan glanced at Song Yunfei.
Why else? Of course, because Song Yunfei wouldn’t agree.
Song Yunfei laughed it off. “Um… Brother Wang, do you have any water? I’m a bit thirsty.”
Wang Yi slapped his forehead. “Look at me, I forgot. Wait a moment, I’ll go get some for you.”
At that moment, Wang Yi’s wife came out of the kitchen carrying dishes.
His wife was named Li Jiao. She was pretty and had a well-proportioned figure. The two had been primary school classmates and later got together through a blind date and married.
“Xiao Chu, Xiao Song, you’re here,” Li Jiao greeted them with a smile, her gaze lingering on Chu Jihan’s face for an extra two seconds.
She was wearing a tight T-shirt. Song Yunfei couldn’t help but glance a couple more times at her striking figure.
This woman really had a great body.
Chu Jihan simply nodded indifferently without looking at her.
Song Yunfei smiled brightly. “Brother Wang called us over, so we came right away. I’ve been looking forward to your cooking skills, Sister-in-law.”
Li Jiao chuckled. “Then you should come over often. We’ve been neighbors for so long—don’t treat us like outsiders.”
Wang Yi chimed in, “Yeah, don’t be so polite. After I leave, she’ll be alone here. We’ll still need you two to look out for her.”
Song Yunfei responded, “Don’t worry, Brother Wang. If Sister-in-law needs anything, just come to us.”
The atmosphere at the dinner table was lively and pleasant. Wang Yi even brought out a bottle of liquor and poured drinks for everyone.
His main intention was to get the two of them to take care of his wife. After all, it wasn’t safe for a woman to live alone—having someone nearby to help would be reassuring.
Song Yunfei naturally agreed without hesitation.
Chu Jihan was a man of few words, rarely speaking. Wang Yi and his wife were already used to it.
Li Jiao raised her glass toward Song Yunfei. “Song girl, let me toast you. We might need to rely on you and Xiao Chu in the future.”
Song Yunfei was busy eating. Hearing this, she quickly put down her chopsticks and picked up her glass.
Her mouth was still stuffed with food—it really was too delicious.
She mumbled, “No trouble, it’s what we should do.”
After swallowing the food, she downed the drink in one go.
Then she immediately started coughing from the spiciness, almost spitting the alcohol out.
This made Wang Yi and his wife burst into laughter. Li Jiao thoughtfully handed her a drink.
“Song girl, you can’t drink? Better stick to beverages.”
Song Yunfei gave an awkward smile and took the drink, gulping down more than half a bottle.
Chu Jihan had a good tolerance for alcohol. He drank several rounds with Wang Yi, and Wang Yi was already struggling to keep up, while he still looked perfectly fine.
After the meal, Chu Jihan stood up first to take his leave.
Wang Yi tried to keep them, but seeing that Song Yunfei looked a bit dizzy, he let them go.
Song Yunfei didn’t expect this body’s tolerance to alcohol to be so poor—just one cup had her feeling completely disoriented.
Her steps were unsteady as she swayed while walking. Chu Jihan supported her, and she leaned into his chest.
With his help, the two of them returned to their rented apartment.
“Are you alright?” Chu Jihan asked, looking down at her.
Song Yunfei waved her hand. “I’m fine, just a bit dizzy.”
She spoke unclearly, staggering toward the bathroom. “I’ll go… go take a shower first.”
Chu Jihan watched her back, as if she might collapse at any moment.
As expected, the sound of running water from the bathroom continued for a full half hour, yet she still didn’t come out.
Chu Jihan kept glancing over.
After forty minutes had passed, he walked to the door and called out, “Song Yunfei.”
He called a couple more times.
“You’re still not done?”
There was no response from inside. Chu Jihan frowned, grabbed the doorknob, and pushed the door open.
Inside the bathroom, Song Yunfei lay naked on the floor. The shower continued spraying water over her, and her long black hair covered her face completely.
Chu Jihan’s expression changed slightly. He rushed into the bathroom in a few strides, turned off the shower, and helped her up.
“Song Yunfei, wake up.”
He patted her cheek. After a moment, Song Yunfei slowly opened her eyes.
Her gaze was unfocused as she stared blankly at his handsome face.
Thinking she was dreaming, she reached out and touched his face. “Handsome guy, you’re really good-looking.”
After saying that, she leaned into Chu Jihan’s arms again and closed her eyes. “So sleepy.”
Seeing that she had simply fallen asleep rather than fainted, Chu Jihan’s tense expression eased slightly.
He casually grabbed a bath towel and wrapped her up, bundling her like a cocoon with only her head exposed.
He carried her out of the bathroom, water dripping from her hair all the way.
He walked toward the bed, looked at the clean sheets, then at her still-dripping hair.
After a moment of silence, he turned and walked toward the sofa instead.
He placed her on the sofa, found a hairdryer, and crouched down to dry her hair.
Not because he was particularly worried about her—just because he didn’t want her wet hair to soak the sofa and floor.
Song Yunfei half-slept, her eyelids drooping. The sound of the hairdryer only made her more drowsy.
After a while, Chu Jihan heard her making soft noises.
He looked up and saw her wriggling on the sofa, trying to break free from the towel wrapped around her.
He reached out and pressed her down.
Song Yunfei struggled to open her eyes, her face showing a hint of discomfort.
She looked at the blurry figure in front of her and squeezed out a few words from her throat: “I need to pee.”
……
Chu Jihan thought to himself: I should’ve just gone to deliver food.
As expected, staying with this woman meant she would always find ways to cause trouble.
